5 Things to Watch at the NBA Draft

In no other league do players get overhyped and over-analyzed like the NBA Draft, and this year’s class is hard pan proof. It’s always easy to get excited about an influx of fresh faces and fresh talent in the NBA, but it’s no secret that the 2009 draft is a class that nobody is excited about.

The reason is two-fold. First, nobody cares about any player not named “Blake Griffin”, who has already been told he’s going first-overall to the Los Angeles Clippers. Secondly, nobody outside of the major markets is willing to take on contracts right now. Rookies in the top-10 get a minimum of $2.1 million and are on the books for at least three seasons. That’s a lot of dough to spend, considering that some NBA teams are on the verge of utter bankruptcy.

So with lack-luster players, teams desperate to shed contracts and only one serious impact player on the market, what the hell are you looking forward to at the draft? Here’s what I’m keeping my eyes on:

1. Who’s Gambling On Ricky Rubio?
You’ve all heard by now that Ricky Rubio, from Spain, is destined to be a top-3 pick. The teenager is being touted as a Spanish Magic Johnson, who has shown a desire to win and incredible court vision. He’s both creative and passionate, and his skills seem to be up there when you watch game tape of him holding his own in the Spain vs. USA game from the Olympics.

Are the Kansas City Chiefs Better?

The Kansas City Chiefs - Did they really get Better?

Out with the Old and in with the New, but will the Kansas City Chiefs be any better in ’09? Last year the Chiefs started out horrible and ended up horrible. There was just no way of getting out of their 2-14 season (8-8 against the spread), in which Brodie Croyle, who had been anointed the “quarterback of the future,” went down with an injury, and Tyler Thigpen wound up being the quarterback. Other parts didn’t work, Larry Johnson had off the field problems, and the pass rush was completely non-existent, setting a modern NFL record for futility. Can things get any better for the Kansas City Chiefs this year?

Favre Playing Hard Ball with Vikings

Brett Favre In Minnesota Vikings Uniform On Sports Illustrated

Brett Favre In Minnesota Vikings Uniform On Sports Illustrated

We are at the unchanged old cock-and-bull story with Brett Favre. He gave Green Bay headaches by buzzing and hawing about his unfinished retirement. Then New York promptly gave Brett Favre the door after he threw for 3,472 passing yards with 22 touchdowns and an equivalent number of interceptions.

There is an even more beseeching fear in the waltz around that the North Star State and Brett Favre find themselves in. It is without doubt that Favre is a huge upgrade over Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels. Simply what it also says about the Minnesota Vikings is that, since Daunte Culpepper, they have no estimation what the hell on earth they are doing at the quarterback position.

The devoid of a significant starting quarterbacks in the NFL is a egregious concern in football. Jay Cutler, a future franchise guy, bolted out of Denver to land in Chicago, who dealt the farm to get the pouty mouthed pigskin pusher. Kansas City just deferred out over $14 million to bring Matt Cassel, who is coming off only one great season. To put it simply, teams are paying a premium to acquire a franchise quarterback in the league.
