St. Louis Blues Team Information

Inspired by a famous song by W.C. Handy called "St. Louis Blues", the St. Louis Blues started playing in the NHL on October of 1967 at the old St. Louis Arena.

Throughout the decade of the 70's the St. Louis Blues would experience financial problems, until 1977 when the team is finally purchased by Ralston Purina. He immediately renamed the St. Louis Arena to Checkerdome. By 1980 the changes began to show as the team won the Smythe Division. This was after two straight terrible years where the Blues had been considered one of the worst professional hockey teams. However claiming he's losing 1.8 million dollars a year, just five years after he purchased the Blues, Ralston Purina decides to sell the team to a group of investors who want to move the team to Saskatoon. The NHL intervenes and denies the move. The new owners hand the team to the NHL and close the Checkerdome.

Just before the season of 1983-84, the team is sold to Harry Ornest, who hires a new general manager as well as a new coach. With this new management the team would finish second and advance to the playoffs against the Detroit Red Wings. They won the series with the last two games being won on the newly renamed St. Louis Arena. The finals would go on against the Minnesota North Stars who would become the champions on the extra time of the seventh game.

In 1986 the Blues would be sold again to a local ownership group led by Michael Shanahan. This time the coach Jacques Demers left for the Detroit Red Wings and was replaced for Jacques Martin who would get the Blues all the way to win the Norris Division. However the Blues would lose to the Maple Leafs on the playoffs.

In 1994 the Blues left the old St. Louis Arena to the brand new Kiel Center. Five years later the team and the arena would be purchased by the Wal Mart family. The arena is renamed the Savvis Center and now the Scottrade Center.
