Detroit Red Wings Team Information
After the 1925-26 season the Western Canada Hockey League folded, leaving the players of one of the best teams of that league, the Victoria Cougars, available for a deal that would be signed with a Detroit based franchise. The city of Detroit didn't had a stadium available yet, and the club would have to wait until 1927-28 season for the new Detroit Olympia, an arena that would serve as their home until 1979, when the team left the Olympia and opened the Joe Louis Arena, where they currently play their home games.
Since their beginnings on the city of Detroit, the club has been known with three different names. When they first arrived from Canada, they club name was Detroit Cougars in honor of the Victoria team which provided most of its first players. Then for the season of 1930-30, the team was seeking to get a new identity and are renamed Detroit Falcons. Despite the changes, the team continues to struggle through the years and it wasn't until 1932 when James D. Norris buys the team and renames it with the Detroit Red Wings which is its current name. The winged wheel was inspired by a Montreal Athletic Association hockey team for which Norris used to play and became the Red Wing's official logo. That season the Detroit hockey team finished tied for the Division championship and although lost the title the Red Wings managed to take over the Montreal Maroons to advance to the semi finals against the New York Rangers, sadly the Detroit club would lose the series 6-3. This would open a new era for the Red Wings as they won the Division title the very next season for their first time.
One tradition that has been created by Detroit's fans is when they throw octopi onto the ice. The creature's eight legs symbolizes the eight victories it once took the Red Wing's to conquer the Stanley Cup.
