New Orleans Hornets Team Information

Charlotte, North Carolina was awarded with a NBA expansion franchise in 1987 along with three other cities. It was thought at the beginning that the team would be called Charlotte Spirit, but with some pressure from the fans the name was changed to Hornets in part because traditionally all professional teams from Charlotte were called that way. It is said the term appeared during the revolutionary war. British General Cornwallis remarked about the resistance met in North Carolina. It was so fierce that he said "There's a rebel behind every bush, it's a veritable nest of hornets."

In 1992 the Hornets moved to New Orleans after team owner George Shinn set an ultimatum to the city of Charlotte to build a stadium at no cost for the team. He was also blamed for trading super stars like Kobe Bryant and Alonzo Mourning for not wanting to pay market value. All of this forced a fast move to the south city of New Orleans. The city of Charlotte still managed to build the arena and it was opened in 2005 as the Charlotte Bobcats Arena. The Hornets managed a quick deal to play at the New Orleans Arena, next door to the Louisiana Superdome.

Due to the catastrophic events in 2005 caused by Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Hornets were forced to move temporarily to Oklahoma City for the seasons of 2005-06 and 2006-07. The plan is to split the home games, with 35 games being played in Oklahoma City and 6 in New Orleans.
