San Francisco Giants Team Information
The San Francisco Giants are a professional team based in San Francisco, California. The team came in to existence in 1883, is one of the oldest teams in MLB. The team played in New York City until 1958 and was originally called the Gothams. The team won its first National League pennant in 1888 and they captured the world championships in 1888 and 1889. The Giants lost a majority of their player rivals leagues and they ended the seasons on or near bottom of the NL from 1890 to 1893. In 1894 they won the World championship but they could not achieve much glory for next ten years. John McGraw was appointed as the manager of the team in 1902 and two years later they achieved a franchise record by winning 106 games. Under McGraw, the Giants won ten National League pennants and three World Series championships. McGraw managed the team till 1932.
The Giants ended the 1932 season in last place that resulted in eruption of tension among the manager and the players. Bill Terry joined the team as player-manager in 1933. Terry again led the Giants to pennant victories in 1936 and 1937 but, unfortunately got defeated in World Series before the new dominant power in major league baseball. The Giants failed to make playoff appearance during the 1940s. The team captured the pennant in 1951 before getting defeated to the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Giants returned to the top in 1954, taking the World Series in a four-game upset with a team that featured center-fielder Willie Mays, one of the baseball's greatest all-around talents. The new team owner moved the team to San Francisco in 1958. The Giants ended the 1959 season in 3 rd place in a 3-way race for the NL pennant with 83-71 record. The Giants remained top team until 1962 when Joan Whitney Payson founded the New York Mets and brought National League baseball back in the city. In 1964 the Giants ended the season in 4 th place with a 90-72 record, only 3 games out of 1 st place.
The team could not make in the World Series until 1989, McCovey won MVP award in 1969. The Giants made their next appearance in the year 1971 but as a whole the 1970s decade was a disappointing one as they ended every season at low places. Bob Lurie bought the team in 1976 when they were planning to move to Toronto . The Giants, during the 1980s and early 1990s rose to NL pennant contention. In 1987 and 1989 he team won two Western division titles. The team was joined by two superstars, Barry Bonds and Dusty Baker in 1993. All thorough 1990s the Giants contended annually for the National League West division title. The period of 1994 to 1996 was not good years for the Giants. They sank to last place in both 1995 and 1996 as the team faced injuries and tragedies. In 2002 the Giants won the National League wild card. The Giants lost the World Series in 2003 but recorded a record of 100 victories for the seventh time in franchise history and third time in San Francisco.
