The Pittsburg Pirates are a professional team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The team was founded in 1882 and was known as the Alleghenies and the Innocents. The Pirates got its current name in 1890. From 1901- 1903 Pirates completely dominated the National League but they lost the first World Series that they ever played in 1903 to Boston. The Pirates won their World Series title in 1909, defeating the Detroit Tigers in seven games. Fred Clarke, Rube Waddell, Honus Wagner future member of the Hall of Fame, joined the Pirates in 1900. Manager Barney Dreyfuss became known as the Father of the World Series after challenging the American League—champion Boston Pilgrims to a best-of-nine-game series in 1903, which the Pirates lost, five games to three. Babe Adams helped Pittsburgh capture its first World Series championship in 1909. The Pirates won the NL Championship again in 1926 with 95-58 record and faced the Washington Nationals in one of the most exciting World Series ever played. Walter Johnson led the Pirates to a 9-7 victory and their 2nd World Championship.
Lloyd and Paul Waner joined the team in 1927, the Pirates won the NL pennant but were defeated in the World Series by the New York Yankees. With the Waners, shortstop Arky Vaughan helped keep the Pirates in contention during the 1930s. The Pirates declined in late 1940s despite the addition of outfielder Kiner in 1946. In 1950s the Pirates registered a low period as they could not achieve much glory. The Pirates registered only one winning season until 1958, when Danny Murtaugh took over as manager. The 1960 team featured eight All-Stars but lost the World Series to a powerful New York Yankees team. The Pirates returned to prominence in 1970. The Pirates won their first division title in 1970 and won the fourth World Series in 1971. In 1973 the team suffered a mysterious breakdown due to the death of Clemente in a plane crash.
The team was managed by Chuck Tanner took in 1977. The Pirates captivated their fifth World Series in 1979 once again in seven games. Following was a period of decline until the Pirates were regarded as the worst team in baseball during the mid-1980s. Under manager Jim Leyland the team was rebuild. The Pirates won three straight division titles in the period from 1991 to 1992. Leyland the manager of the Pirates was named NL manager of the year in both 1990 and 1992. The mid- 1990s recorded a declining phase as they did not register any winning record. In 1997 the team finished second in the NL Central. The team recorded poor play in 2001. In 2002 the Pirates ended in 4 th place with a record of 72-89 which marked their 10 th straight losing season.
