Kansas City Royals Team Information
The Kansas City Royals are a Major League Baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The team came into existence in the year 1969 and is one of the most successful teams in the Major League history. The club won four division titles and one pennant in its first 12 seasons. The key to Kansas City’s success during the 1970s and 1980s was third baseman George Brett. The Royals quickly became successful, winning three straight division championships from 1976 to 1978 under manager Whitey Herzog. The Royals was led by manager Jim Frey when, they made their first World Series appearance in 1980, losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. In 1980 the Royals dominated the American League West again with a score of 97-65 winning the division title by comfortable 14 games. It is ion the same session that the team Royals defeated the New York Yankees and faced the Philadelphia Phillies in their first trip to the World Series. In 1982 the Royals again achieved victory in 90 games after tasting slight decline.
The Royals won their fifth division championship in 1984, although they were swept by the eventual World Champion Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series, and went all the way to the World Series again in 1985 under manager Dick Howser, this time beating the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals in the so-called I-70 Series in seven games. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Royals developed young stars such as Bo Jackson and Kevin Seitzer and made some free-agent acquisitions but always fell short of their early success. The session 1987 proved to be a bad season for the team as the Royals battled the Minnesota Twins all year before falling 2 games short of the a division Championship with an 83-79 record but soon after this failure, in the very next session (1988), the team posted a solid record 84-77 ending the season in third place. The Royals ended the 1989 session in 2nd Place with a solid score 92-70 record. Saberhagen’s second Cy Young Award came in 1989, when he posted a 23-6 record. The Royals’ domination of their division ended in the 1990s, although in 1994 David Cone won the AL CY Young Award and designated hitter Bob Hamelin was named AL rookie of the year.
The team struggled during most of the mid- and late 1990s. In 1993 when Ewing Kauffman died leaving the franchise without permanent ownership, until Wal-Mart executive David Glass purchased the team for $96 million in 2000. The Royals suffered an awful 64-97 in 1999 season, and the Yankees won another World Championship. In the session 2000 the team finished with a 77-85 record. In 2003, manager Tony Peña, in his first full season with the club, guided the Royals to their first winning record since the strike-shortened 1994 season. The Royals won just 1 of their next 14 after the June 24th trade on the way to finishing in last place with the worst record in franchise history at 54-108. The team won the World Series championships won in 1985 and won the AL Pennant in 1980 and 1985.
