Chicago Cubs Team Information
The Chicago Cubs are a professional team based in Chicago, Illinois. The team was founded as an independent professional club in the year 1870 and they joined the National Association in 1871. Formerly called the White Stockings, Colts, and Orphans, the team played at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. In 1890s the name of the team was changed to the Colts. In 1898 the team was known as Orphans. Chicago fielded many powerful teams from 1876 to 1910. In 1905 the Cubs won four pennants and two World Series titles over a five-year span. They recorded 116 victories in 1906 that was not broken till long. In 1907 and 1908 the Cubs won consecutive World Series titles, but since then the team had established the longest championship drought in major league baseball. They didn't win any playoff series between 1908 and 2003, when they beat the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS. In 1921 the team was purchased by a chewing gum manufacturer, William Wrigley, who invested heavy amount in the team.
Chicago won the NL pennant in the year 1929 before getting defeated from the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. They captivated four pennants in 1932, 1935, 1938 and 1945, unfortunately they could not make to the World Series in any of these years. The team experienced a declining phase after 1945. Ernie Banks joined the team in 1953, and became one of the greatest power-hitting shortstops in major league history, although he never played in a postseason game. Mr. Cub, Banks in 1958 became the first member of a team with a losing record to be named the NL's most valuable player (MVP). A year later he became the first NL player to win back-to-back MVP awards. The club continued to show miserable records for a few sessions. In 1964 the team lost Ken Hubbs as he was killed in the plane crash. During a seven-season stretch in the 1960s, Williams set an NL record by appearing in 1117 consecutive games. Leading the Cub's pitching staff during the late 1960s and early 1970s was Ferguson Jenkins. He recorded six consecutive 20-win seasons from 1967 to 1972, capturing the NL Cy Young Award in 1971.
In 1984, The Cubs won the first two games of the then-best of 5 National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field against the San Diego Padres. Andre Dawson was named as NL MVP in his first session in the year 1987. Don Zimmer took over as the manager of the team and led the team to another division title in 1989. Greg Maddux captivated the Cy Young Award in 1992. In 1998 the Clubs won 90 games, led by the hitting of Sammy Sosa and the pitching of rookie Kerry Wood.
