Boston Red Sox Team Information
The Boston Red Sox are professional baseball team based in the Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox was founded in 1893, as the Toledo, Ohio franchise in the minor Western League. The team shifted to Boston in the year 1900. The team in their inaugural session in 1901 made a score of 79-57. The Boston Red Sox won the first World Series in 1903 against the favored National League team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Baseball legends Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young helped Boston win six pennants and five World Series titles from 1903 to 1918. In 1919, the team's new owner, Harry Frazee, sold Ruth to the New York Yankees. In 1920 the Red Sox won 5 Championships, while the Yankees won none.
The Red Sox were purchased in 1933 by a wealthy, shy young man named Tom Yawkey who began pumping money into the team. Joe Cronin takes over the reigns as manager in the year 1935 and guides the Red Sox to their first winning season since 1918 at 78-75, which was good enough for 4th Place. In 1956 Major League Baseball established the Cy Young Memorial Award, which is given annually to Red Sox each league's best pitcher. The Red Sox are the first team to have back-to-back batting champion and ERA champions in the same years. Ted Williams hit .388 at the age of 38 in 1957, but there was little else for Boston fans to root for. Williams retired at the end of the 1960 season, famously hitting a home run in his final at-bat. The 1960s started poorly for the Red Sox, though 1961 saw the debut of Carl "Yaz" Yastrzemski, who later proved to be one of the best hitters of the pitching-rich decade. The year 1967 season proved to be a remember able one as Bob Gibson was too much to overcome as he beat Jim Lonborg for his 3rd win of the series to hold of the Red Sox who forced a 7th game after falling behind 3 games to 1.
Fred Lynn claimed Rookie of the Year honors and became the first player to take home the MVP award in 1975. Boston lineups of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s featured stars such as Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, Dwight Evans, Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, and Carl Yastrzemski. Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown in 1967; no player has accomplished the feat since. The Red Sox captured East Division titles in 1988, 1990, and 1995, but the team was swept each year in the ALCS. In 1998 the Red Sox reached the playoffs as a wild card team but lost to the Cleveland Indians in the first round. In 1999 pitcher Pedro Martinez led Boston back to the playoffs and won the AL Cy Young Award after finishing with a 23-4 win-loss record, an earned-run average (ERA) of 2.07, and 313 strikeouts. Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez pulled the "double-double" in 1999-2000. The Boston Red Sox have won 7 World Series.
