The Atlanta Braves are a professional team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The team came into existence in the name of Boston Red Stockings in the year 1876, it was in the year 1966 that the team came to be known as the Atlanta Braves. The Atlanta Stadium was opened in the Atlanta in the year 1965 season and it was in the year 1966 that the Braves moved to Atlanta. On April 12th 1966, the Braves hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates for the first Major League Game in Atlanta. The game lasted for 13 innings before the Pirates won 3-2. The Braves ended their first season in 5th place with 85-77 record, in their first season in Dixieland, as Hank Aaron led the NL in HR and RBI. The very next season proved to be the first losing season in 15 years with a woeful record of 77-85. They won the 1969 NL West pennant, before being defeated by the “Miracle Mets” in the NLCS. In 1974 Aaron broke Babe Ruth's 39-year-old record by hitting his 715th career home run.
Hank Aaron retired from the team in 1976 with a major league record of 755 career home runs. The series of the 1980s was a declining phase as the Braves failed to win any pennant. The team did not register any winning record till the year 1982 just the players like Dale Murphy and Bob Horner appeared as the promising players of the team. In the 1990s, the Braves won a string of division titles. In 1991, led by Bobby Cox (NL manager of the year), Terry Pendleton (NL most valuable player), and Tom Glavine (NL Cy Young Award winner), the Braves won the NL pennant but got defeated by the Minnesota Twins in the World Series. The Braves won the NL pennant again in 1992, but this time they lost the Series to the Toronto Blue Jays. In the year 1993 the Braves won the division title and Greg Maddux captivated the CY Young Award. The Braves won a World Series in 1995, defeating the Cleveland Indians in six games, by this achievement the Braves emerged as the first team in Major League Baseball to win World Championships in three different cities. The Braves won division titles in 1997 and 1998 but could not return to the World Series until 1999, when the team's offense was powered by third baseman Chipper Jones, who won the NL most valuable player (MVP) award. In the year 1999 the Braves got defeated from the New York Yankees in the World Series.
The team won the National League East Division in 2001, swept the NLDS against the Houston Astros, and then lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS. In 2002, 2003 and 2004, the Braves won their division again, but lost in the NLDS in all three years 3 games to 2 to the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros, respectively. In 2005, the Braves won their 14th consecutive division title. The team won the World Championship in 1995.
