New Orleans won the NFC South last year with a 13-3 record. They were 6-2 at home and 7-1 on the road. They went 4-2 in the division and 9-3 in the conference.
They won Super Bowl XLIV by beating Indianapolis 31-17.
New Orleans Saints Outlook for 2010
In the 44 year history of the Super Bowl only seven teams have been able to repeat as champions with New England doing it last in 2004-2005. With New Orleans remaining pretty much the same team that won it all last season, the pressure to repeat will be the toughest challenge they will face. There have already been some off field distractions since their big win and as usual there are some high profile players not happy with their current contract so head Coach Sean Payton already has his work cut out for him.
Offensively there is little question of how good this team is. All the key players from last year’s No.1 ranked unit will be back so you would have to think they will once again be one of the highest scoring teams in the league. The strongest aspect of this team is their balance between the pass and run which makes them extremely hard to defend against.
The one area of concern could be their defense which seemed to break down a bit toward the end of last year. They finished the season ranked 25th overall and 20th in points allowed. While they were extremely opportunistic with a +11 turnover ratio, that is one stat that is hard to duplicate year after year. Resigning S Darren Sharper and drafting CB Patrick Robinson in the first round will help bolster their secondary but they still need to get better at defending the run.
The Saints are still the class of the NFC South so it is hard to see them not repeating as division champions. Beyond that, things could get a little tougher as there are a few good teams in the conference expecting to take their spot in next year’s Super Bowl.
