Atlanta Falcons 2010 Odds, Preview, and Predictions

Atlanta Falcons Current odds to win: Division: +200 Conference: 13-1 Super Bowl: 30-1

Atlanta was second in the NFC South last year with a 9-7 record. They were 6-2 at home and 3-5 on the road. They went 3-3 in the division and 6-6 in the conference. They failed to qualify for postseason play.

Atlanta Falcons Outlook for 2010

Atlanta took a bit of a step backyards in 2009 as they went from an 11-5 playoff team in 2008 to watching the postseason on TV last year. The one positive aspect is they finished strong with four straight wins so expectations are high they can compete for the division and return to the postseason in 2010.

The key to the Falcons success next season is the continued development of QB Matt Ryan. Heading into his third season he needs to regain the form that led to an incredible rookie campaign. In 2008 he threw for 3,440 yards and had a completion percentage over 60%. In 2009 he still had a decent year, but his number dropped off completing just 58% of his passes while throwing for almost 500 yards less. His total touchdown passes increased but so did his interceptions. Ryan has all the tools to be one of the top QB’s in the league, but will be under the gun to prove it in 2010.

Atlanta’s defense suddenly became very average last season ending up ranked 21st overall. They were ranked 10th against the run but a dismal 28th against the pass. They recently made some positive moves in the secondary by releasing former No.1 pick CB Tye Hill and signing S Matt Giordano, who was with the Packers last year. They also drafted LB Sean Weatherspoon in the first round and DT Corey Peters in the third to address some other concerns on this side of the ball.

The Falcons probably have the best chance of anybody to give New Orleans a run for their money in the South, but they will need some things to come together quickly on defense and for Ryan and Co. to return to their 2008 form to make it a serious one.

2010 Atlanta Falcons Prediction: 8-8, second place in the NFC South.
