2009 Record: 5-7 MAC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 5 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Jeff Quinn (Buffalo and overall: 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Greg Forest Defensive Coordinators: William Inge

2010 Buffalo Players to Watch: RB Ike Nduka, RB Brandon Thermllus, S Davonte Shannon, CB Domonic Cook, LB Justin Winters, DE Steven Means

2010 Buffalo Strengths:
The Bulls don’t view the ongoing quarterback competition as a drawback. Both players could play. The offense will thrive behind avery good front wall and a deep, talented stable of runners. The Bulls’ secondary might be the MAC’s best.

2010 Buffalo Weaknesses:
Aspeedy defense could get worn down. The Bulls don’t have size or strength to match blows against powerful. run-first teams. If the Bulls don’t develop depth at receiver. teams will stack the box to stop their running game.

2010 Buffalo Offense:

The quarterback position was the biggest question facing new coach Jeff Quinn during spring practice, but there is no wrong answer. Redshirt sophomore Jerry Davis and redshirt freshman Alex Dennison remained neck and neck heading into the summer. It helps that the Bulls return four starting offensive iinemen and two running backs with starting experience. Quinn won’t name a starting quarterback during the summer. With two potential starters he believes in, the first-year coach is focusing on more pressing matters. How to replace Naaman Roosevelt at wide receiver sits atop that list. The obvious starting point is junior Terrell Jackson. What the Bulls have after Jackson isn’t as obvious. Junior Marcus Rivers, an underachiever for two seasons in former coach Turner Gill’s system, has looked more sure-handed, mature and confident as a receiver. At 6-4, 207, he came to DB looking the part. This could be the season he delivers on that potentiaL If not, the Bulls could be very green. Redshirt freshman wideout Alex Neutz had a good spring. Senior running backs Brandon Thermilus and Ike Nduka are likely to share the load again, with Jeffvon Gill also in the mix. If spring practice was a harbinger of what’s to come, redshirt freshman Branden Oliver might wind up as the Bulls’ featured back. He’s shifty, elusive and fast, but a minor knee injury set him back in April.

2010 Buffalo Defense:

Strong safety Davonte Shannon covers a lot of ground, but the secondary goes deeper than the three-time, first-team All-MAC selection. Cornerbacks Domonic Cook and Josh Thomas are seniors, too. The Bulls are built for speed and mobility. The defensive line starters’ average height/weight is 6-1, 252 pounds. The team could shift to a “multiple” defensive front, incorporating more 3-4 base looks. The anchor is tackle Anel Montenez. The Bulls won’t be the same without junior linebacker Scott Pettigrew, who is likely out for the season with torn right knee ligaments.

2010 Buffalo Special Teams:

The Bulls know what they have in senior kicker A.J. Principe. He owns multiple school records and has range beyond 45 yards. Punter Peter Fardon’s spot isn’t as secure. Even though he’s held the job for two straight seasons, he faces a stiff challenge from 6-6 senior John Rachuna. Oliver, who might be squeezed out of the running back mix, is listed as the primary kickoff returner and makes tacklers miss in the open field. Punt returner Domonic Cook has pure speed and is difficult to find behind blockers at 5-8, 186 pounds.

2010 Buffalo Predictions:

With Turner Gill now at Kansas, Buffalo will fly under the radar entering the 2010 season. But in a league prone to sleepers and surprises, the Bulls shape up as a team to watch. Quinn last served as Brian Kelly’s offensive coordinator at Cincinnati, a program they helped lift to the top of the Big East, and he is wellversed in Kelly’s hurry-up spread offense.
