Game Preview: Memphis Tigers vs Kansas Jayhawks

Memphis Tigers (0-0) vs Kansas Jayhawks (1-0)

The No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks will host the Memphis Tigers on Friday at the new and improved Allen Fieldhouse.

The last time these two teams met was on Apr 7, 2008. The Jayhawks walked away with a 75-68 overtime victory and it first National Championship in 20 years.

Kansas is coming of a 101-65 pounding of Hofstra in their season opener on Friday the 13th. First year guard Xavier Henry hit five 3-pointers and set a school freshman record with 27 points. Senior point guard Sherron Collins had 23 points and Cole Aldrich, perhaps the best pure center in the land, added 11 points and eight rebounds, lifting the Jayhawks to their 42nd straight win at home. After being sidelined with a knee injury, C.J. Henry is listed as a probable start against his former team on Tuesday night.

The Memphis Tigers come into Tuesday’s match up off an 82-53 victory over Jackson in State in Josh Pastner’s debut as head coach last week. Elliot Williams scored 19 points and Will Coleman finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Memphis limited its opponent to 37 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers. The Tigers went on a 17-1 run to put the game away in the second half. The win was marked by intense full-court defense, and the ability to get out on the break. Four freshmen –Drew Barham, Tyler Foster, D.J, Stephens and Malik Thomas—will be counted on to replenish the depth lost by four departing starters.

The odds makers currently have Kansas as –10 point favorites.

This will be a hard fought battle. The Tigers have great shooters on the perimeter that could certainly create problems for the Jayhawks. Kansas will need to work the paint, setting up opportunities inside.

Jayhawks win it in a tight one.
