2009-2010 East Carolina Season Preview
East Carolina coach Mack McCarthy certainly would like to have more veterans, but with the departure of Sam Hinnant and James Legan, he finds himself needing to rely on newcomers to keep the Pirates moving forward.
Replacing Hinnant and Legan, who finished 1-2 in scoring last season for ECU, is the year’s biggest task.
Still, the emergence of some young players has East Carolina’s future on the upswing.
Jazzy junior point guard Brock Young was one of the brightest young stars in college basketball last year. He finished second nationally in assists at 7.6 per game and also has the ability to score. He will be called upon to do more of it this season.
Darrius Morrow, who initially signed with South Carolina, was a solid inside presence, leading the team with 6.7 rebounds per game to go with his 9.7 points. He became the sixth player in East Carolina history to be named to the league’s All-Freshman team. He ranked second among C-USA freshmen in rebounding and fourth in scoring. Still, Morrow needs to add more muscle to be a true game-changer. Junior Jamar Abrams also will have an opportunity to improve his scoring average as he will be relied on more heavily.
Starting with 6-5 swingman Wakefield Ellison and 6-4 shooting guard Corvonn Gaines, East Carolina signed what appears to be a solid, if unheralded, recruiting class.
Darius Morales, a 6-9 power forward, could also see more playing time at small forward as will 6-6 Erin Straughn. Evan Salzano, a 6-0 point guard, will back up Young.
But without Hinnant and Legan – they also combined for 165 3-pointers – defenses will more than likely pitch a tent around Morrow and stop Young’s dribble penetration.
