MLB | May 22, 2012 LA Anaheim: C Wilson vs. Oakland: G Godfrey
The Angels lost the series opener last night, wasting another strong starting pitching effort for the third straight game as the offense continued its struggles. Los Angeles has been inconsistent at the plate all season and this has been especially true of late, scoring just five runs in its last three games, all resulting losses as no surprise. The pitching has carried the load and that has been the case recently as the Angels have a team ERA of 3.38 over their last 10 games.
The A's are sitting four games in front of the Angels which is something no one saw coming. They are now back over .500 on the season and are right at .500 at home. While the Angels offense has been poor, the Oakland offense has been even worse as the A's are hitting only .216 on the season which is worst in the Majors even their home average is dreadful as it is a similar .216. The pitching has carried Oakland as well but that is not the case with the starters for tonight.
Graham Godfrey is back in the rotation after getting recalled from Triple-A. He struggled in his first three starts with Oakland so he was demoted to try and work things out. He posted a 5.06 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in those three games with losses taking place in all three. He did pitch well in Sacramento so he is getting another shot but it is certainly a big change from the Minors to the Majors. The Angels are 7-3 in their last 10 games against starting pitchers with a WHIP of 1.30 or higher.
C.J. Wilson counters for the Angels and he is coming off one of the worst starts of his career as far as location goes. He allowed just one earned run against the White Sox but he walked a career-high six batters as he needed 88 pitches to get through just 3.2 innings. I expect a big bounceback as after starting the season with six quality outings, he has failed to register one in his last three. In his last four starts against Oakland, he has a 1.93 ERA with all four starts being quality efforts. 7* (977) Los Angeles Angels
We saw something very similar last night with Boston as the home team took advantage of having a Game Five at home and thus took control of the series with a win. Miami is in the same spot tonight and after a very inspired effort on Sunday, I expect the Heat to ride that into Tuesday. They lost the last home game in this series by three points to the Pacers and being 32-6 overall at home, another loss isn't likely. The Heat have not lost two straight home games all season as they won those other five follow up losses by 19.4 ppg.
The Pacers lost a golden opportunity on Sunday as they had a chance to take complete control of the series with a victory and it was at home no less. Obviously they did not get it done and now are in a tough situation that could them in a real bad spot heading into Game Six should they lose. In the history of the NBA Playoffs, teams that are up 3-2 are 206-35 (.855 winning percentage) in those series so a Game Five win is obviously a big advantage.
The difference in Game Four was the play of the two stars, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Wade and James accounted for 38 straight points during the critical second-half run where they took control of the game and overall they finished with 70 points, 27 rebounds and 15 assists. Another effort like that and Miami cannot be stopped and with all of the criticism hitting Miami and its two big names, look for another huge effort from James and Wade on their home floor on Tuesday.
The Heat are 5-0 ATS in their last five games after scoring 100 or more points while going 5-1 ATS in their last six games as a home favorite. The Pacers meanwhile are just 8-18 ATS in their last 26 games revenging a home loss while going 9-22 ATS in their last 31 games after playing two consecutive games at home. Also, Indiana is just 1-9 ATS following a game played as a home underdog. Big teams step up in big spots and we saw the Heat do it two days ago and we will see it again here. 10* (538) Miami Heat
