Detroit Red Wings 2008-’09 record:
51-21-10, 112 points (1st in Central, 3rd in West)

Detroit Red Wings 2008-’09 playoffs:
Def. Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0, def. Anaheim Ducks 4-3, def. Chicago Blackhawks 4-1, lost to Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3

Last season was extremely successful as the Red Wings repeated as Central Division Champions with an impressive 51-21-10 record and their strong showing earned the 2 nd overall seed in the Western Conference. After the Sharks’ upset at the hands of Anaheim in the first round, Detroit claimed home ice for the rest of the playoffs and they took advantage, qualifying for the Stanley Cup Finals for the second consecutive year. A familiar foe awaited them: The youthful Pittsburgh Penguins, whom the Wings had defeated the previous year in 6 games to hoist the Cup. However, Pittsburgh shocked the Wings by forcing a 7 th game and won the Stanley Cup on Detroit ice. [Read more...]

Dallas Stars 2008-’09 record:
36-35-11, 83 points (3rd in Pacific, 12th in West)

Dallas Stars 2008-’09 playoffs:
Did not qualify

Last season began off all right for the Stars but many of their high-profile players were felled by injuries and they collapsed down the stretch. There were some highlights though, as youngsters Lou Ericksson (36 goals) and James Neal (24 goals) broke out into scoring roles. Dallas missed the playoffs with a 3 rd place finish in the division. However, Dallas’ year was marred by injury and the ridiculous Sean Avery saga that drove the team into the tank and they never recovered, finishing with 36-35-11 record, 12 th in the Western Conference. 41-31-10, 92 points (4th in Central, 7th in West)

Columbus Blue Jackets 2008-’09 playoffs:
Lost to Detroit Red Wings4-0

Last season was easily the best season in franchise history. That’s because the Blue Jackets made the playoffs for the first time! Buoyed by a big season from captain Rick Nash, who scored 40 goals, and the emergence of rookie goalie Steve Mason, the Blue Jackets managed to finish fourth in the extremely difficult Central Division.

Colorado Avalanche 2008-’09 record:
32-45-5, 69 points (5th in Northwest, 15th in West)

Colorado Avalanche 2008-’09 playoffs:
Did not qualify

Last year was a very tough season for the Avalanche. Captain Joe Sakic was injured in a freak snow blower accident and only played in 15 games and young star Peter Statsny only played half of the season after falling to injury as well. Unsurprisingly, the offense suffered in their absence. The Avalanche scored the fewest goals in the entire league last year and only wingers Milan Hejduk and Ryan Smyth scored more than 20 goals! The Avs also finished in the bottom five of the league in goals allowed and fell to the bottom of the Western Conference with a 32-45-5 record, which was the 3 rd worst in the National Hockey League. To cap off a terrible season, Sakic announced his retirement after 19 seasons, leaving the Avalanche with a major leadership void. [Read more...]

Chicago Blackhawks 2008-’09 record:
46-24-12, 104 points (2nd in Central, 4th in West)

Chicago Blackhawks 2008-’09 playoffs:
Defeated Calgary Flames 4-2; Defeated Vancouver Canucks 4-2; Lost to Detroit Red Wings 4-1

Last season was a magical year in Chicago. The extremely young Blackhawks rode the talents of captain Jonathan Toews (34 goals, 69 points) and diminutive playmaker Patrick Kane (25 goals, 70 points) to produce a high-powered attack and finished the regular season with a 46-24-12 record, good enough for the 4 th seed in the Western Conference. Behind solid goaltending, this young team grew up before the hockey world’s eyes before falling in the Western Conference Finals to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings. In short, it was a fantastic year from a team that began the season high on promise and little else. [Read more...]

Carolina Hurricanes 2008-’09 playoffs:
Defeated New Jersey Devils 4-3; defeated Boston Bruins 4-3; lost to Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0

Carolina gave their fans something to really cheer about for the first time since that Cup run, finishing the regular season with a 45-30-7 record, which earned their first playoff berth in 3 seasons. They quickly became the Cardiac Canes, scoring winning goals late in games throughout the first two rounds as they upset New Jersey and Boston en route to the Eastern Conference Finals. However, Carolina met their match when the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins shut them down. The microcosm of the series was the struggle of the Staal brothers: Pittsburgh’s Jordan prevented big brother Eric from muster a consistent attack and that sealed the Canes’ fate. [Read more...]

Calgary Flames 2008-’09 record:
46-30-6, 98 points (2nd in Northwest, 5th seed in West)

Calgary Flames 2008-’09 playoffs:
Lost to Chicago Blackhawks 4-2

Calgary had a great year, finishing with a 46-30-6 record, good enough for a 2 nd place finish in the division. While they fell just two points short of the division crown, their strong showing still earned them the 5 th seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Powered by great seasons from captain Jerome Iginla (35 goals, 89 points) and winger Mike Cammalleri (39 goals, 82 points), Calgary finished 4 th in the conference in goal scoring! A late season acquisition of center Olli Jokinen brought more hope to Calgary for a long playoff run but they were bounced in the first round by Chicago, leaving their fans disappointed for the fourth straight season. Buffalo Sabres 2008-’09 record:
41-32-9, 91 points (3rd in Northeast, 10th in East)

Buffalo Sabres 2008-’09 playoffs:
Did not qualify

The young Sabres competed well throughout the year and many of the youngest took steps towards becoming the new faces of the team. Star young winger Thomas Vanek continued to reward Buffalo’s faith in matching a monster restricted free agency offer sheet by scoring 40 goals and Ryan Miller continued his ascent to the elite among NHL goalkeepers. However, the Sabres fell just short of the playoffs as their 41-33-9 record left them a mere two points short of postseason action. [Read more...]

53-19-10, 116 points (1st in Northeast, 1st in East)

Boston Bruins 2008-’09 playoffs:
Defeated Montreal Canadiens 4-0; lost to Carolina Hurricanes 4-3

Last year was an extremely successful season for the Bruins as they finished the regular season with a 53-19-10 record and earned the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. In fact, they only fell one point short of the President’s Trophy! The Bruins’ deep lineup featured seven 20 goal scorers and they entered the playoffs as one of the favorites for the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, they were felled in overtime in Game 7 of the Eastern Semifinals, ending a fantastic season on a major down note. [Read more...]

35-41-6, 76 points (4th in Southeast, 13th in East)

Atlanta Thrashers 2008-’09 playoffs:
Did not qualify

The Thrashers had a pretty rough first half last year and were among the league’s worst teams at the All-Star break. However, superstar Ilya Kovalchuk was named as the team’s captain in January and he was exceptional thereafter, scoring more than a point per game. The team’s play on the ice improved noticeably as well and the Thrashers finished with one the NHL’s best 2 nd half records. However, it wasn’t enough to qualify for the playoffs as Atlanta finished with a 35-41-6 record, good enough only for a 4 th place finish in the Southeast. [Read more...]
