NFL Preseason Betting – Bills, Titans kick season off in Canton

While the UFC 101 fight card will be on a lot of minds this weekend, there is also the NFL’s official kickoff to the season, the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, which is the home of the Hall of Fame. This year’s participants are Buffalo and Tennessee, and the game has gotten a lot of attention with Terrell Owens in town.

NFL Betting – Sunday, August 9, 8:00 PM ET

The Bills are welcoming the T.O. show to town, but players watching Sunday’s game probably won’t see that much of Owens, along with the rest of the first string. Fred Jackson and Dominic Rhodes will have their first showdown in the “who will back up Marshawn Lynch” sweepstakes, which could mean a long day for the Tennessee defense. The Bills’ defense was surprisingly good in 2008, and they’ll be looking to see how rookies Jairus Byrd and Aaron Maybin hold up.

The Titans will be playing their first game with no Albert Haynesworth in the middle, which is why we say that the Tennessee defense could have some problems with the Buffalo running game. The rest of the Titans’ seventh-ranked defense is back, but they’ll be looking for at least two players to fill the void left by Haynesworth. On offense, Vince Young will get his first shot at regaining his starter’s role, which was taken by Kerry Collins, and Young will look to put a plagued 2008 behind him. Chris Johnson is hurt, which means he won’t see much action (if any at all), and LenDale White won’t be risked, either.

AFC East– Pats back to reclaim their crown in the East

AFC East – Pats back to reclaim their crown in the East

Players who make NFL betting picks must feel like everything is back to normal in the football world, as the New England Patriots are poised to stake their claim to the NFL throne, starting with the AFC East.

The Patriots are massive -1000 favorites in your offshore sportsbook, and with Tom Brady back in the mix, it’ll take a brave player to wager against New England. Wes Welker, Randy Moss and Joey Galloway could now be the most potent receiving trio in the league, while Fred Taylor joins Laurence Maroney in a running-back platoon. On defense, Shawn Springs replaces Ellis Hobbs at the corner, and look for Jerod Mayo to be a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. The defense only has to be decent, because the Patriots are sure to lead the league in points.

Buffalo is next with football odds of +1000, and the acquisition of Terrell Owens has brought a lot of excitement to the Bills. Owens joins Lee Evans, Jake Reed and Marshawn Lynch in an impressive set of skill players, but the onus is on Trent Edwards to do something with all that talent. The defense is solid if not unspectacular, but they’ll need to be on their toes to compete with the Patriots,

Defending champion Miami is rated at +1100, and they grabbed safety Gibril Wilson from Oakland to combat the Patriots’ aerial efficiency. They’ll also have former Dolphin Jason Taylor back to offset Joey Porter. Offensively, the Dolphins are led by Chad Pennington, while Ted Ginn Jr. is considered by many who make sports picks to be one of the breakout players of the year. They should have a better season than the Bills, but they’re still not coming close to the Patriots.

Are the Kansas City Chiefs Better?

The Kansas City Chiefs - Did they really get Better?

Out with the Old and in with the New, but will the Kansas City Chiefs be any better in ’09? Last year the Chiefs started out horrible and ended up horrible. There was just no way of getting out of their 2-14 season (8-8 against the spread), in which Brodie Croyle, who had been anointed the “quarterback of the future,” went down with an injury, and Tyler Thigpen wound up being the quarterback. Other parts didn’t work, Larry Johnson had off the field problems, and the pass rush was completely non-existent, setting a modern NFL record for futility. Can things get any better for the Kansas City Chiefs this year?

The numbers:

Favre Playing Hard Ball with Vikings

Brett Favre In Minnesota Vikings Uniform On Sports Illustrated

Brett Favre In Minnesota Vikings Uniform On Sports Illustrated

We are at the unchanged old cock-and-bull story with Brett Favre. He gave Green Bay headaches by buzzing and hawing about his unfinished retirement. Then New York promptly gave Brett Favre the door after he threw for 3,472 passing yards with 22 touchdowns and an equivalent number of interceptions.

There is an even more beseeching fear in the waltz around that the North Star State and Brett Favre find themselves in. It is without doubt that Favre is a huge upgrade over Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels. Simply what it also says about the Minnesota Vikings is that, since Daunte Culpepper, they have no estimation what the hell on earth they are doing at the quarterback position.

The devoid of a significant starting quarterbacks in the NFL is a egregious concern in football. Jay Cutler, a future franchise guy, bolted out of Denver to land in Chicago, who dealt the farm to get the pouty mouthed pigskin pusher. Kansas City just deferred out over $14 million to bring Matt Cassel, who is coming off only one great season. To put it simply, teams are paying a premium to acquire a franchise quarterback in the league.
