Conference USA – 2009 Football Betting Preview

2009 Conference USA Football Betting Preview

2009 Conference USA Football Betting Preview

The ’08 Conference USA season brought new national respect and recognition. With 2 straight shocking upsets by East Carolina over ranked West Virginia and Virginia Tech at the begriming of the season that shot the Pirates all the to 14th in the national polls and made them the early favorite to bust the BCS. But that was wishful thinking as the Pirates fell apart soon thereafter, leaving the potential BCS busting to be done by Tulsa, who started the season 8-0. But the bubble was burst again as Tulsa ran into trouble when they visited Arkansas and finished the regular season 10-2. The two teams met up in the Conference USA Championship Game and it was an excellent game that East Carolina won 27-24, with the deciding factor being a 6 turnover difference in favor of the Pirates. Conference USA teams also ended up with a 4-2 bowl record to finish a great season.

This year should have the same excitement. 7 teams have won the conference championship in the last 7 years and there are no less than 5 programs this fall with a legit shot to emerge victorious at the end of the season. It is also a veteran conference, with 7 teams returning 15+ starters. With that much talent returning, C-USA could once again pull off some big time upsets. But the West division appears to be much more top-heavy than the East does as Tulsa and Houston appear to be the overwhelming favorites to win the division in the conference title game. Expect a long and action packed conference race that will more than likely see each division decided on the regular season’s last day.

Big East – 2009 Football Betting Preview

2009 Big East Football Betting Preview

2009 Big East Football Betting Preview

The Big East had a tough ’08, as the Mountain West success gave rise to the question who deserves an automatic BCS Bowl berth more? The Big East or Mountain West? To us it is shocking to see how short the media’s memories are. The Big East won 3 straight BCS Bowls from ’05-’07, with victories over the SEC, ACC and Big XII champions. With that said, the Big East regrouped in the postseason, posting a solid 3-3 record, but they had their BCS Bowl winning streak snapped and forced the media to praise the Mountain West instead of denigrating the Big East.

The 2008 season was marked by turmoil. The Big East lead was given away seemingly every week, all the way up to the end of the season. Cincinnati emerged from the fray with a 6-1 conference record to win their first championship since joining the Big East. We admit we wrote them off after the Huskies blew them out in the second game of the conference schedule but they proved us wrong, winning their last 5 conference games, including 3 against ranked teams. Our preseason favorite was South Florida and they disappointed, us losing all 3 conference away games and stumbled their way to a 1-4 finish.

Our other top team from last year was Pittsburgh, who we picked to narrowly lose to South Florida in the standings. Pittsburgh fared much better than South Florida and their late November loss at Cincinnati was a defacto conference title game. The Panthers are the only Big East team that year end and year out recruits top 25 classes and should continue to be a force for years to come. But don’t forget, this IS the Big East, which has had 4 different champions in the past 5 seasons, so expect another crazy year that will surprise even the most knowledgeable Big East fans.

Big 12 – 2009 Football Betting Preview

2009 Big XII Football Betting Preview

2009 Big XII Football Betting Preview

The Big 12 had a great 2008 year, highlighted by and incredible league-wide offensive explosion. 6 teams averaged 35+ points per game. Another major story was the emergence of the Big 12 South as one of the nation’s top divisions. In fact, the controversy which surrounded the tie breaking process between Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma atop the division standings brought alot of publicity to the conference. After a controversial rule earned them a berth in the Big 12 Title Game, the Sooners took advantage and beat the Missouri Tigers to claim a spot in the BCS championship game. While Oklahoma fell short in their fifth straight BCS bowl game, the Big XII conference finished with a 4-3 record in bowl games.

This season, the Big XII is expected to be as competitive as ever. The North has not won the Big 12 championship game in five years but there are 3 major contenders lying in wait as the Kansas Jayhawks, Colorado Buffaloes and Nebraska Cornhuskers should all have a legitimate chance to play for the title. While 2x defending division winner Missouri might take a step back this season after losing so much talent, the top 3 teams should fight to the final day of the season to determine a champion.

In the BIG 12 South, Texas Tech is not expected to challenge the big 2 (Texas & Oklahoma) after finishing 2008 as divisional co-champions, However, the Oklahoma State Cowboys enter the season ranked in the top 10 and is a legit threat to break the Sooners and Longhorns’ 10 year hold on the South division title. However, Texas and Oklahoma, they have a score to settle after Texas beat the Sooners head to head last season but was left out of the Big 12 Title Game and subsequent National Championship game while finishing with the same record. But, don’t forget about Baylor, who is more talented than they every have been in the last decade! The Big 12 South will once again be one of the nation’s top competitive divisions.

ACC – 2009 Football Betting Preview

2009 ACC Football Betting Preview

2009 ACC Football Betting Preview

When you think ACC you think – Basketball. Programs like North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech are all nationally successful and respected in the hoops world. In 2005 after the ACC expanded to 12 teams nobody could have predicted the effect it would have had on it’s conference’s teams in football. You would have thought that Miami and Florida State, would be the superpowers of the ACC, but both have slipped and fallen of the map recently. While the most successful football teams since the merger have been Boston College & Virginia Tech. Nevertheless, the conference needs Florida State and Miami to return to their winning ways, because the ACC hasn’t had a legit contender for the BCS title in 3 of the past 4 years.

The 2008 season was a weak season for the ACC overall. Last years preseason favorite Clemson Tigers, first debuted in the top 10 was expected to be the ACC’s only national title contender, but they were destroyed in the season’s opener and fell into a downward spiral that terminated their head coach at mid season. No ACC team had a better league record than 5-3 at the end of the season. Boston College and Virginia Tech defending divisional champions met for the 2nd straight season in the ACC Championship Game after both teams won divisional tiebreakers. The end result once again was Virginia Tech blowing out the Golden Eagles to win their 3rd ACC Title in 5 years. The Hokies were the ACC’s top ranked team at #21 in the nation while entering bowl season. Virginia Tech’s Orange Bowl victory over the #12 Cincinnati Bearcats was the ACC’s 1st BCS bowl victory since 2000. After a solid bowl season, 3 ACC teams ended up in the top 25 final rankings.

The 2009-210 ACC season should be much improved. 7 teams return 14 or more starters and the Coastal Division looks to be one of the toughest in the country with 4 teams that could enter the season in the top 25. While, the Atlantic does not have an elite team it is a free for all as 4 teams have great shot at making the conference title game. After rebuilding years many teams featured potential starts last season, and the ACC has high hopes that a few teams could potentially be involved in the National Title discussion. We believe that ’09 could be the ACC’s strongest year since it’s expansion.
