Conference USA – 2009-2010 Basketball Betting Preview

Memphis lost its head coach, four starters from last year’s 33-4 (23-13 ATS) squad, and a jacked recruiting class, and they could easily walk away with another league title. The Tigers and new head coach Josh Pastner should remain a very respectable wager on reduced price alone.

Doug Wojcik could easily lead Tulsa to the C-USA crown and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Jerome Jordan and Ben Uzoh provide the best inside-outside combination in the conference. Expect the Hurricane to be less profitable because of their increased national exposure.

UAB went a disappointing 14-19 ATS (22-12 SU) last season, and failed to make the Big Dance. Filling the roster for Mike Davis is a hodge-podge of junior college transfers and freshmen. AlabamaBirmingham might be a better bet, but this roster won’t remain elite in C-USA.

The Houston Cougars lost big men Marcus Cousin and Qa’rraan Calhoun from last year’s team that went 21-11 (12-16-1 ATS). Houston has excellent guard play, led by the dynamic duo of Aubrey Coleman and Kelvin Lewis.

Big East – 2009-2010 Basketball Betting Preview

Louisville went 22-15 ATS (31-6 SU) last season with a trip to the Elite Eight. Expect the Cardinals to take a small step back with Terence Williams and Earl Clark gone to the NBA.

If Jerome Dyson returns strong from his knee injury, don’t sleep on Connecticut. Bettors are fading the Huskies after the. losses of Hasheem Thabeet, Jeff Adrien, and AJ. Price, but there’s plenty of talent in Jim Calhoun’s cupboard.

Pittsburgh lost four starters from last year’s Elite Eight squad, so the Panthers are rebuilding. The question is whether Jamie Dixon can get Pitt up and running faster than public bettors expect.

Villanova is a +275 favorite to win the Big East, and it should be; senior point guard Scottie Reynolds withdrew from the NBA draft to return, The sky’s the limit for Jay Wright and one of the nation’s most talented recruiting classes.

Marquette starts over, with Jerel McNeal, Wesley Matthews and Dominic James gone. Buzz Williams will build around forward Lazar Hayward, but the Golden Eagles appear to be another year from contending with the big boys.

Big 12 – 2009-2010 Basketball Betting Preview

The Big 12 is the deepest conference in the nation. No league has put more teams into the Final Four or Elite Eight over the past eight seasons. That’s why many of the schools in the conference were bleeding money for bettors last season.

Kansas won’t be as profitable this season. The Jayhawks made it to the Sweet 16 after going 27-8 (20-8-1 ATS) last season, and they return all five starters. Just to make sure Kansas has enough reinforcements, Bill Self brought in one of the nation’s top recruiting classes for good measure.

Expect Oklahoma to remain in the black even if Blake Griffin and his older brother Taylor are off to richer pastures in the NBA. The key is 6-foot-9, 300-pound freshman center Keith ‘Tiny’ Gallon, who needs to immediately chip in.

Missouri is going to take a step back, both in the standings and at the window. There’s no way the Tigers will repeat last year’s 31-7 (20-11 ATS), with the top three scorers from the 2008-09 squad gone. Mizzou won’t be as effective over the long haul because of its inexperience.

Big Ten – 2009-2010 Basketball Preview

Michigan State was not only the best team in the Big Ten last season, but it was the best bet at 21-13- 1 ATS (31-7 SU). Tom Izzo’s team reached the Final Four for the fifth time in 11 years in 2008-09, a rate unparalleled in the college basketball universe. For the Spartans to get back, they’ll need to replace Goran Suton’s interior presence.

Purdue (+200) is right behind Michigan State (+175) on the outright odds list to cash the conference title. That’s because the Boilermakers have the top six players from last year’s rotation returning to the mix from a team that went 27-10 (15-18 ATS) a year ago. If Robbie Hummel’s back is right, the Boilermakers could reach Indianapolis.

The Fighting Illini surprised many by finishing in a tie for second in the conference last year, although the success didn’t translate to paydays at the window. Bruce Weber welcomes a highly-touted recruiting class to Champaign, and his main charge will be to get the talented youngsters to mesh with the existing nucleus.

The Nittany Lions finished 18-12-1 ATS (27-11 SU) to procure modest returns for backers, and took home the NIT title. Penn State has scheduled a more challenging non-conference slate so it’ll get a longer look come selection time. That might mean more losses for Talor Battle and company, but potentially more paydays.

ACC – 2009-2010 Basketball Betting Preview

North Carolina starts without its top four scorers from a year ago, but oddsmakers still list the Tar Heels among the favorites (+700) to repeat as champions, thanks in part to recruits like Josh Henson. UNC lost its top seven scorers after its title in 2005, but still finished in the top 10 the following year.

Duke will likely start five McDonald’s AllAmericans, as Coach K fields a new-look team, relying more on his forwards. Kyle Singler is expected to move to the three spot and e-foot-s senior guard Jon Scheyer will start. He’ll have to run the point like he did last year to keep Duke in the black.

Expect the Demon Deacons to be overvalued, because square bettors will remember the team that looked like a national championship contender last season. With Jeff Teague and James Johnson gone, it’ll be a rebuilding year for Dino Gaudio.

Long, deep, and talented, Florida State is going to be a sharp play after going 18-10-1 ATS (25-10 SU) last ‘season. Toney Douglas is in the pros, but the Seminoles return seven of their top nine scorers. Bettors can count on Florida State’s defense getting the job done.

Game Preview: Detroit Titans vs California Golden Bears

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2009

Detroit Titans (0-0) vs. California Golden Bears (1-0)

The No. 13 California Golden Bears will host the Detroit Titans in Wednesday in the first ever match up between these two teams.

The Golden Bears edged out the Murray State Racers 75-70 in their season opener on Monday. Cal has four starters returning from a 22-win 2008 season, and figure to compete with Washington for the Pac 10’s top spot. The Golden Bears led the nation in 3-point accuracy last season at 42.7 percent, and every player who contributed to their 210 made 3-pointers, returns this season. Second-year head coach Mike Montgomery, will rely heavily on senior All-Pac-10 guards Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher. Randle returns as the Pac-10’s No. 2 active career scorer (1,184 points) and No. 2 active career assist man (374).

Detroit will get tested early as they kick off their season at the Cal this Wednesday. They have posted back-to-back 7-23 seasons and haven’t finished above .500 since 2003-04 (18-13). The Titans traveled to Spain in the off-season, where the team went 5-0. Returning guard Eulis Stephens did well in Spain and averaged 16.3 points per game on the tour. Indiana transfer Eli Holman and Central Michigan transfer Chase Simon are expected starters for Wednesday’s contest. Junior forward Xavier Keeling is back after missing the final 23 games last year with a broken foot. He averaged 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds and shot 48.3 percent from the field in seven games.

Game Preview: Northern Carolina Central Eagles vs North Carolina Tar Heels

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2009

Northern Carolina Central Eagles (0-0) vs North Carolina Tar Heels (1-0)

The 100th home opener for the North Carolina Tar Heels ended in an easy 88-72 win over Florida International. UNC shot 55 percent from the field in the game, including 64 percent in the second half. The Tar Heels defense allowed the Golden Panthers to only 33 percent shooting and were fueled by 2008 leading scorer, forward Deon Thompson’s 20 points and 10 rebounds. Although the win is positive, the Heels may have a rough year with tougher opponents as they restock their roster, replacing four exiting starters from the 2009 NCAA championship team. New faces include three 6-10 forwards—John Henson and twins David and Travis Wear. All are considered to be top power forward prospects. Two other newcomers, freshmen Leslie McDonald and Dexter Strickland will fill in the areas in the backcourt and perimeter.

The Eagles will open its third season as a Division I program as part of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference under new head coach and former player, LeVelle Moton. This will be NCCU’s first regular season meeting against the Tar Heels. This is the Eagles second meeting against a defending national champion. The Eagles battled the University of Florida in its first season of Division I competition falling 105-51 in Gainesville, Fla. on Nov. 14, 2007. The Eagles will look to leading returning scorers, sophomore forward Nick Chasten and junior guard Vincent Davis to help improve on the Eagles 4-win 2008 season.

The odds gods currently have the Tar Heels at a whopping –46 point favorite.

Game Preview: Bowling Green vs Buffalo Tuesday November 3 at 7:00 PM

Buffalo Bulls vs Bowling Green in Prime Time Matchup on Tuesday Night

Buffalo Bulls vs Bowling Green in Prime Time Matchup on Tuesday Night

The MAC has become known for two things:  Early week matchups and lack of consistency amongst its programs.  On a year to year basis it is hard to predict which teams will be really good or bad which can make predicting the outcome of games pretty challenging.  Witness Ball State last year.

Coming into this year Buffalo was celebrating a league championship and expected to challenge again.  Sure they were losing a senior QB in Drew Willy but the pieces were in place to challenge for a division and league title.  Boom..leading TB James Starks is out for the year and this team has become one of the most effective passing teams in the league featuring a great WR in Naaman Roosevelt.  When they can get their ground game going they can look very good but they have struggled in this area…and with consistency on the whole

Bowling Green enters tonight contest with the same 3-5 record that the Bulls are sporting but they might be exceeding expectations.  They had a nice win against Troy to start the year but losses to Marshall and Ohio were head scratchers.  They are definitely a passing team as well ranking fourth in the nation in yards.  They also have the nations leading receiver in Freddie Barnes.  It looks like tonight’s game will have a lot of balls in the air.
