Game Preview: Texas Long Horns at Texas A&M

Texas (11-0) at Texas A&M (6-5), Thursday November 26, 8:00PM

The math has gotten pretty simple for the Texas Longhorns.  Just keep winning and you get to play for a national championship…probably facing Alabama or Florida.  Considering most people think the Big 12 North is a bit of joke this may be the last big hurdle, a big-time rivalry game on the road against the team that loves to beat them the most.  Texas A&M is only 6-5 but they have proved that they can score with a pass happy offense.  Will it be enough to keep them in the game?

Of all the undefeated teams I have seen I have been the least impressed with Texas.  I do think they are probably better Cincinatti and Boise State but I just haven’t been blown away when I see them.  Colt McCoy seems to be getting better as the season progresses and the defense is doing the same.  They seem to be the kind of team that can beat you in a variety of ways and you never know until the game is over which facet of their team will shine.  This team is loaded with next level talent but it is not of the eye popping variety like when VY was running the campus…but they should win this game easily.

A&M is already bowl eligible but a victory against Texas would be a fantastic ending to a nice rebound season.  The Wrecking Crew defense may be a thing of the past but the offense, behind QB Jerrod Johnson, can put yards and points up on the board ranking 7th and 17th nationally in those categories.  Unfortunately for them a lot of that damage is done through the air where Texas is especially strong.  The Texas defense is ranked third in the nation so this will be a real test and the Aggies haven’t really risen to match the better teams on their schedule.  The rivalry will give them some juice but it won’t be enough.

Game Preview: West Virginia at Cincinnati

Game Preview:  West Virginia (7-2) at Cincinatti (9-0) 8:00 PM Friday

I love mid-week football.  Thursday night is great and Tuesday and Wednesday are really fun.  But I am not sure how I feel about Friday night.  The matchups are usually not that great and there is something that just doesn’t feel right.  Nevertheless there is a game this Friday, a critical Big East tilt with BCS implications between West Virginia and Cincinnati.

West Virginia enters the game at 7-2 but with only one loss in the conference.  I am not a math major but this keeps them alive for the time being but they can’t really afford to lose another game if they want to be BCS bound.  They have no signature wins this year to date and have generally been underwhelming as evidenced by their 2-6 ATS record.  Essentially they win but not as impressively as we would like.  Jarrett Brown doesn’t have the magic of Pat White and turns the ball over too much.  Meanwhile jitterbug Noel Devine is having a great year.  They are both banged up but will they be enough to stop the undefeated Bearcats.  Probably not.

This is because the Bearcats are clicking at an amazing pace.  When Tony Pike went down Zach Collaros stepped up.  He has thrown 10 TDs with only 1 INT and had gaudy yardage stats to match.  It seems unlikely that the West Virginia defense is going to slow him down.  But…who will start on Friday?  As of this moment it is a bit unclear.  Coach Kelly has said that Pike is his starter…when he is ready.  We will have to monitor this one closely before making any wagers.  Right now the spread is -9 which might be a bit high if Pike plays and is rusty.

Game Preview: Connecticut at Cincinnati

Connecticut at Cincinnati Saturday, 8:00pm on ABC

Connecticut at Cincinnati Saturday, 8:00pm on ABC

This game has so many great story lines I just couldn’t ignore it.  Forgive me if they are not all wager related.  Of course you have Cincy pitching a perfect season so far, sitting on the outside of the BCS championship game…and you have the sadness of UConn, having lost one of their own and displaying so much pride, dignity and courage.  Throw in the possible return of Tony Pike who was maybe leading the Heisman race and there is a lot to talk about.  I think that might be why this game is in prime time…I’m not sure but I think the game time might have been moved.

What else can you say about Cincinatti.  They have a perfect record and have been continuing to dispatch opponents even with their backup QB.  It is amazing how far this program has come.  The closest any team has come is 10 points so it is not surprising that the line has been set at -17 this week.  Connecticut is a determined and emotional squad but I do not see away they can win this game.

However, it should be noted that last year UConn destroyed the Bearcats in Storrs 40-16 but that team had more talent than this one Husky fans. The past two weeks have been tough.  The tragic loss of Jasper Howard has been followed by two close losses and I credit Randy Edsall for keeping his team together.  For the sake of everyone I hope this game will not be a blowout and I think that will not be the case.  It may not be in doubt for very long but the Huskies will put up another spirited and gutty performance.

Game Preview: Virginia Tech at East Carolina

Virginia Tech at East Carolina, Thur. at 8:00 PM

Virginia Tech at East Carolina

Both teams enter this weekend with 5-3 records but are looking at the remainder of their seasons very differently.  Virginia Tech‘s loss last week pretty much eliminated their division, conference and BCS hopes while East Carolina still has a lot to play for in Conference USA.  This lack of motivation might be a factor, although it should be noted that Virginia Tech might want to exact revenge for last year’s upset in Blacksburg…if they can.

Virginia Tech, despite the record appears to be getting better on offense.  Tyrod Taylor is improving and the running game has been solid although the rumours are that Ryan Williams is having trouble getting over the fumble that cost the Hokies the game last week. If he is in a funk they will have a hard time staying with an an East Carolina team that is still searching for a real quality win this year.

ECU has scuffled along this year.  Winning most of the games it is supposed.  After last year’s start and with the return of QB Patrick Pinkney more was expected.  Pinkney has been part of the problem throwing more INTs than TDs.  Last year he was on fire (19/23) in the big upset win at VT.  He will have to be close to that for ECU top have a chance.

Game Preview: Maryland at Duke, Saturday 1:30PM EST

Game Preview: Maryland at Duke, Saturday 1:30PM EST

Forgive me again for taking you down the path less travelled for college football fans and wagerers alike.  I bring this game to light because I think it is a great investment opportunity and, as you know, I love shedding a little light on the programs that seldom receive it.

For some the ACC is mediocrity incarnate, a bunch of middle of the road teams without a dominant team that everyone can agree on.  Earlier this year the league seemed even below mediocre as teams like Virginia and Maryland struggled against FCS foes.  Now that all teams are in conference play that mediocrity makes for some interesting wagering opportunities if you know where to look.

I believe this matchup is one of these opportunities.  Duke is currently sitting at 3-3 (rare for them) and has somehow developed the best passing attack in the ACC.  Thaddeus Lewis is gunning for POY honours with over 1600 yards to date.  He has thrown for 12 TDs with only 2 INTs.  Maryland may have owned Duke in the past but it appears this year that the Blue Devils will be able to defend themselves especially coming off of their biggest win in memory on the road NC State.

Game Preview: Rutgers vs Army

October 23rd Rutgers vs Army Prediction & Odds

October 23rd Rutgers vs Army Prediction & Odds

I imagine that it I Googled Texas/Oklahoma or USC/ND last week I would have received a million hits a good portion of which would have included some insight or a prediction about those games.  As a college football fanatic and handicapper though I am often interested in games where there is not nearly as much being reported or hyperbole.  Often these contests present stronger wagering opportunities because it can be harder for the books to balance action if they have not been sharp with their initial lines.

It is in that spirit that I am taking a look at the Rutgers at Army game this weekend.  Rutgers (4-2) hasn’t proven anything this year other than that they can beat bad teams with inferior talent.  They are 0-2 in the Big East and were badly outplayed against Cincinatti and Pittsburgh in both.  Army is 3-4 but has beaten a team from the big bad SEC while dropping some games to MAC competition.  Sure it was Vanderbilt but they are better than anyone Rutgers has beaten.

Army has lost their last five to Rutgers and I don’t see a winning outcome here but I think they will play hard and cover the spread which is currently at +10.  They need to start fast with their ground game which has out-gained all but one foe this year.  If they can jump out to an early lead they may be able to put some pressure on Rutgers who definitely has superior athletes in key spots.  However, Rutgers has been playing a Freshman at QB in Tom Savage.  He was picked off once last week and might be coaxed into another turnover or two.

Red River Shootout: Oklahoma vs Texas

Game Preview – #18 Oklahoma (3-2) vs #2 Texas (5-0), Saturday, Noon

Game Preview - #18 Oklahoma (3-2) vs #2 Texas (5-0), Saturday, Noon

Game Preview - #18 Oklahoma (3-2) vs #2 Texas (5-0), Saturday, Noon

I was listening to a podcast the other day when it was highlighted that there are never any good games starting at 12:00 EST anymore.  This is partially an indictment of the Big Ten who pretty much owns that time slot making us sit through Northwestern/Indiana/Purdue/Minnesota matchups before the real action begins at 3:30.  But mostly it is because the TV gods have determined that late games, especially night games on national TV are so lucrative.

Well people can put their complaints away this week as the annual Red River Shootout (Rivalry – lame) between Oklahoma and Texas kicks off at noon this Saturday.  Despite Oklahoma’s two losses (each by a point in games ace QB Sam Bradford did not finish) this is still a pivotal matchup.  Oklahoma may be out of the BCS Championship picture at this time but they would love nothing more than to spoil Texas’ chances as well.  Plus there is a movement out there that if the Sooners run the table in the Big 12 they might be able to sneak into the title game given the closeness of their losses and the surrounding circumstances.  I don’t buy it but stranger things have happened.

On to the game…If Bradford is completely healthy I really like Oklahoma’s chances.  Texas has sleepwalked through parts of each of its games this year and Colt McCoy has been more careless than usual with the ball.  He was the difference maker in the second half of last year’s game but if memory serves the Longhorns were the underdog in that one.  This is not the case this year they are -3.
