Pitching Probables: Adam Wainwright vs. John Niese
The Cardinals were red hot coming out of the All-Star Break but cooled over the weekend against the rival Cubs. They are looking to extend their lead over the Cincinnati Reds against a Mets team they took two of three from back in April but haven’t seen since. Starter Adam Wainright has been fantastic this season. In his last start he shutout the Phillies over six innings in what would end up being a 2-0 loss. He personally hasn’t added a loss to his record since the middle of June and only twice in his last 10 outings. The Cardinals are winning two out of every three games he starts this year and have not lost back back outings so they are due for another win tonight. Lastly, I wouldn’t put too much stock into it but it should be noted that the mighty Albert Pujols was only 2 for 14 against the Mets in that April series.
Many teams are making moves but the Mets have yet to do so. I think they were hoping for a bigger spark to the lineup from the addition of Carlos Beltran butit just hasn’t happened (and doesn’t look like it will either). With their recent 2-9 west Coast trip they have slipped into a tie with the Marlins and a third place finish or worse will mandate big changes, perhaps even before the end of the season (sorry Jerry Manuel). It’s going to be tough to end their losing ways against Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright. He beat them back in April and is arguably the best pitcher in the National League right now. Mets starter John Niese has been a pleasant surprise this season. He had a string of 4 quality starts in a row until his most recent outing against Arizona and even that won wasn’t a disaster. He is going to have to keep pace with Wainright for the Mets to have a chance. A tall order these days.
The odds makers have the St. Louis Cardinals as a -1½ with a run total of 7.
Prediction: All signs point to the Mets continuing their futility against one of the games best and hottest pitchers. Cardinals all the way.
