Pitching Probables: Kenshin Kawakami vs Andrew Miller

The Braves are enjoying a better than expected season but they can’t afford to let up know. They must finish strong or else all those come from behind victories will have been for not. I have written before about Atlanta’s amazing success at home but it should be noted that they are 8 games under .500 on the road (surprising for a first place team), including 2-4 against the Marlins. Kenshin kawakami is making his first appearance since July and is a staggering 1-9 on the season (the Braves have lost his last 8 road starts) – you wouldn’t think you could compile such an awful record with a first place team. With every game counting they need him to keep them in the game so they can try and win late as usual. His numbers for his career against Florida are not pretty either, just 1-4. It will be interesting to see if Atlanta can finish this out, especially if can not rely on Derek Lowe down the stretch.

You have to hand it to the Marlins. They are not likely to make the playoffs this year, again, but they never seem to pack it in. They have a great chance to spoil things for the Braves by taking this series and have had success in the division this year leading all teams with 29 victories. Andrew Miller was the linchpin in the Miguel Cabrera trade a few years back but he hasn’t really panned out as expected. This year the tall lefty had made only one start, a no-decision against the Astros where he gave up just a single run in 5 innings. He faced Atlanta last week in relief giving up 4 runs in 4 innings. There is little reason to have great confidence in him this evening other than he appears to be more comfortable pitching at home.

Prediction: No reason to expect a low scoring affair in this one. Look for the Marlins to jump out early and barely hold on. Best play is probably the over.

Florida is +106 and the O/U is 9.

Score Prediction:
Florida Marlins – 7
Atlanta Braves – 6

In the second year of the 2nd Bill Snyder Era, the Kansas State Wildcats get a big test right off the bat against a Pac-10 opponent, and at home. Here’s the thing, though: the Bruins are banged up like you couldn’t believe, and quarterback and the offensive line are huge liabilities. Kansas State’s biggest strength should be its offense and running back Daniel Thomas, who led the Big 12 in rushing last year. Also, don’t forget the UCLA Bruins are a middle-of-the-pack team in their own league, at the very best. Kind of like the Wildcats!

One of the more interesting matchups as we witness the starts to two new eras. Robert Marve has people excited down in West Lafayette while Brian Kelly has the entire nation curious as to whether he can work his magic again with the Fighting Irish. My guess is that this game will not answer all of our questions about both squads but it should be entertaining. Hard to bet against Notre Dame at home with Kelly the first week. You know he will have something creative in mind to assure victory.

2010 AFC West – Win Totals Preview, Predictions & Picks

With all 32 teams eagerly preparing for the 2010 NFL football season, it is time to take a look at the projected win total for each team to try and determine whether they will go over, stay under, or push. Today we take a look at each team in the AFC West.

San Diego Chargers – Win Total Prediction: 11

Before the preseason started, picking San Diego to win 12 or 13 games and cruise to the AFC West title seemed like a no-brainer. With the start of the regular season right around the corner and the Chargers still embroiled in some serious contract disputes; this no longer seems like a lock. Vincent Jackson, the team’s leading wide receiver in 2009 appears content to hold out the entire season to try and force the team to either pay him or trade him. Also missing from the team for the same reason is All Pro LT Marcus McNeill, who is primarily responsible for protecting Philip Rivers’ blind side. These are two players that you do not to try and make a championship run without – UNDER.

Denver Broncos – Win Total Prediction: 7.5

It is still hard to know what to expect from this team. Will they play like the one that stormed out to a 6-0 start last season, or the one that limped in to finish 8-8? QB Kyle Orton has the ability to be a great quarterback in this league if he learns to play more consistent. He will also have to overcome the loss of his favorite receiver; Brandon Marshall. The Broncos defense has already been impacted by the loss of DE Elvis Dumervil, its most productive player. They finished last season ranked seventh overall, but 26th against the run so losing him will not help their cause. None the less, there is still enough talent on this team to at least get to .500 – OVER.

Kansas City Chiefs – Win Total Prediction: 6.5

In his second season with the team and Todd Haley’s offensive scheme, QB Matt Cassel should be able to play better than last year when he only completed 55 percent of his passes and threw as many interceptions as touchdowns (16). RB Jamaal Charles is set up to have a big year, as the Chiefs will still look to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible. Hiring Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator and drafting S Eric Berry in the first round already makes this defense better than last year’s but it still might not be enough to turn the corner this year – UNDER.

Oakland Raiders – Win Total Prediction: 6

Oakland has suddenly become a lot of people’s boutique pick for the turnaround team of 2010. With Jason Campbell coming over from Washington as their new quarterback along with the steady progression of TE Zach Miller and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, the Raiders passing offense will be much improved. Where Oakland should be much better is on defense, with the addition of first round pick LB Rolando McClain and second round pick DT Lamarr Houston. It took awhile, but the Raiders are finally beginning to build a team that can win more than four or five games a season – OVER.

It is crunch time as there are only two more races for drivers to make it into the ‘Chase’ for this season’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. The ‘Chase’ pits the top 12 drivers in the point standings against one another over a 10 race schedule ending on November 21 at Homestead, Florida. The driver with the most points at the end of that race is declared this year’s champion.

This week’s race is the Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It is scheduled for Sunday night, Sept. 5 starting at 7:30 p.m. The following is a look at the top seven drivers in the point standings along with their odds to win this week at Atlanta.

Kevin Harvick 8/1

Harvick continues to hold the top spot in the standings with 3,521 points. In the first race at Atlanta this season he started 35th and finished ninth. Last year in this race he ended up second after starting 18th which was his best finish ever. Harvick has six top 10 finishes at this track and four in his last five races here.

Jeff Gordon 12/1

With a strong second half to the season, Gordon has 3,242 points and is 279 points out of the lead. In the first race here this season he finished 18th after starting fifth. Last year in this race he started fourth and finished eighth. Gordon has won this race twice in his career; 1998 starting 21st and 2003 starting 19th. Overall he has 22 top 10 finishes at Atlanta including 11 in this race.

Kyle Busch 10/1

After a dominating win two weeks ago at Bristol, Busch has 3,170 points and is 351 points out of first. Earlier this season at Atlanta, he started second and finished 25th. Last year in this race he started fifth and finished 13th. His best finish in this race was in 2008 when he ended up fifth after starting 12th. Busch has raced at Atlanta 12 times in his career, but only has two top 10 finishes and only one in this race.

Carl Edwards 12/1

Edwards’ 12th place finish at Bristol gives him 3,113 points in the standings, 408 points back. He finished 39th in the first race here this year after starting 10th. Last year in this race he started 14th and finished 37th. Edwards has been extremely successful at Atlanta over the course of his career. In only 11 races, he has three victories including two in this race (2005 and 2008). He has eight top 10 finishes with five of them in this race.

Denny Hamlin 12/1

Hamlin had a rough go of it at Bristol, but he held onto the fifth spot in the standings with 3,108 points, which leaves him 413 points in back of Harvick. In the first race here this year he started 20th and finished 21st. Last year in this race he started 10th and finished sixth. His best effort in this race was in 2008 when he finished third after starting 11th. Hamlin has three top 10 finishes in 10 career races at this track.

Tony Stewart 12/1

Continually climbing the leader board, Stewart now has 3,107 points, 414 points out of the lead. Back in the first race here this year finished 13th after starting 15th. Last year in this race he started 12th and finished 11th. He has one career victory in this race; 2006 after starting 11th. Stewart has 13 career top 10 finishes at this track, including seven in this race.

Jeff Burton 18/1

Burton finds himself 420 points out of the lead with 3,095 total points. In the first race this year at this track, he finished 20th after starting 22nd. Last year in this race he started 24th and finished 34th. Burton’s best effort in this race was way back in 1998 when he finished fourth after starting 35th. He does have 12 top 10 finishes at Atlantaand seven in this race.

After making major improvements over the past couple of seasons, big things are expected of the Miami Hurricanes heading in to the 2010-11 college football betting season. The Hurricanes have the potential to challenge for a division title in the Atlantic Coast Conference this year, a long road that begins this Thursday at home against the Florida A&M Rattlers

Florida A&M Rattlers @ Miami Hurricanes

Thursday September 2, 2010 – 7:30 PM ET

Miami Gardens, Miami, Florida

Online Sports Betting Odds: Hurricanes – 14.5

The Hurricanes finished the 2009-10 football betting season ranked 19th in the country, and after an offseason over which Miami improved, the school has moved all the way up to 13th heading in to 2010-11. The Hurricanes have a tough schedule that includes visits to both Ohio State and Pittsburgh over the following two weeks, so it will be crucial to gain some momentum against a division-II school that is not expected to even be able to keep this one close.

NCAA Football Betting Preview: Florida A&M

The Rattlers went 8-3 overall a year ago in the Mid-Eastern Athletic conference, and with many of their key starters returning to the team this season, there is no reason to think that they can’ be just as good in 2010-11. Florida A&M can score in bunches at times, and their passing game is just as potent as the running game, with Kevin Elliott and Isaac West gaining recognition as potential late NFL betting draft picks. Although they have done well in the MEAC, that success doesn’t necessarily translate to games outside of the conference, as illustrated by Florida A&M’s 48-16 loss to this same Hurricanes team a year ago at Sun Life Stadium.

NCAA Football Betting Preview: Miami

Head coach Randy Shannon has pointed the Hurricanes in the right direction over the past couple of seasons, and in his third year with the club Miami is finally ready to contend for an ACC title. The key for the Hurricanes will be consistency, as too many times last season they would suffer hiccups in big games that cost them big time in the standings. Quarterback Jacory Harris returns as the undisputed leader of the offense, and his big-play ability will be the focus of opposing defenses all year. A tough early schedule which features consecutive road games to top-25 teams will likely set the tone for the Hurricanes’ season, which makes it that much more important to get a fast start with a quality outing against a weak opponent.

The Match Up: Florida A&M vs Miami

The Hurricanes dominated when these teams met a year ago, scoring 31 straight points to run away with a 32-point win after the Rattlers kept it close early on. How close Florida A&M will be able to keep it this time around, and for how long, will be a key question heading in to the season opener.

NCAA Football Betting Pick: Miami – 14.5

The USC Trojans will play their first game of the Lane Kiffin Era against the Hawaii Warriors, a team that they have historically dominated scoring over 60 points in their last two meetings. Meanwhile, the Warriors return 12 starters and a pass game that was third nationally and 14th in total offense in 2009. I really don’t see USC losing this one, and if they come out fast, hard and motivated, this one could get lopsided in a hurry.

#14 USC Trojans at Hawaii Warriors – 11:00 PM ET on ESPN

The Trojans will play their first game of the Lane Kiffin Era against the Warriors, a team that they have historically dominated scoring over 60 points in their last two meetings. Meanwhile, Hawaii returns 12 starters and a pass game that was third nationally and 14th in total offense in 2009. I really don’t see USC losing this one, and if they come out fast, hard and motivated, this one could get lopsided in a hurry. Up next: Virginia.

Arizona at Toledo – 8:00 PM ET on ESPN

The Rockets welcome back 12 starters from a 5-7 team, and scored the second most points in the MAC a year ago. The defense however was their downfall, allowing almost 38 points per game and giving up a MAC-worst 241 passing yards per game. Arizona should not take this game lightly, though it’s hard to imagine the Rockets defense will be able to keep up with Nick Foles and company. Up next: The Citadel.

UCLA at Kansas Sate – 8:00 PM ET on ABC

The Bruins, who finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 7-1, shut downed the ‘Cats 23-9 at the Rose Bowl last September, as UCLA’s offensive and defensive lines dominated the Wildcats, recording a season-high six sacks and allowing none. The Wildcats welcome back 12 starters from a 6-6 team. The big question mark will be if quarterback Kevin Prince –currently suffering an oblique injury– will be healthy enough to start, while the inexperienced offensive line is tested to the max. Up next: Stanford.

New Mexico at #11 Oregon – 8:00 PM

The Lobos return 11 starters from a squad that went 1-11 in last season. New Mexico’s week defense should give new Ducks quarterback Darron Thomas plenty of opportunities to gain some early experience. Running back LaMichael James is suspended for this one, but still look for the Ducks to start their bid for the Rose Bowl with an early season win in this one. Up next: At Tennessee.

Sacramento State at Stanford – 8:00 PM ET

The Cardinal look like a contender for the PAC 10 crown and Heisman hopeful Andrew Luck gets an opportunity to add some big numbers to his stats columns against weaker FCS foe, Sacramento State. It will also be a good chance for the new look 3-4 defense and remodeled running game to get some quality non-conference work before a visit to UCLA nest weekend. Up next: At UCLA

Washington State at Oklahoma State – 8:00 PM ET

The Cowboys, who welcome back just eight starters from a 9-4 team, beat the Cougars 39-13 the last time these two teams tangled back in 2008. Despite the fact that Oklahoma State is rebuilding, that shouldn’t stop them from dismantling the Cougars’ defense. At first I pondered the thought that this could be the PAC-10 upset of the week—but then I thought again. Up next: Montana State.

Washington at Brigham Young – 8:00 PM ET

Another PAC-10 Heisman hopeful will have to pick up win number one on the road, as Jake Locker and the Huskies travel to Provo to take on a tough BYU team who welcomes back 12 starters from an 11-2 team a year ago. The Huskies will look to avenge a 28-27 loss from 2008 at Washington after Locker was flagged for tossing the ball into the air after scoring what appeared to a tying touchdown, pending the PAT. UW missed the extra-point attempt and the chance to pick up the win. Up next: Syracuse.

#24 Oregon State at #6 TCU – 8:00 PM ET on ESPN

The Horned Frogs welcomes back 16 starters from a 12-1 team last season and will be a arduous test for the Beavers and new sophomore starting QB Ryan Katz. There should be lot of lone star support for TCU, as fans from within 100 miles of the stadium will want to see their Horn Frogs play. But you can count on the Rodgers brothers — Texas natives– James and Jacquizz to do their best to keep the hometown celebrations to a minimum. But 6th ranked TCU will not be an easy team to run or pass on and boast a pretty good offense of their own led by QB Andy Dalton. This should be a good match up and will prove whether Oregon State should be considered a serious contender this season for winning the PAC 10. Up next: Bye.

Today we take a look at each team in the AFC North.

Baltimore Ravens – Win Total Prediction: 10

It took a win the final regular season game to get Baltimore into the playoffs last season, but a dominating 33-14 win over the Patriots in New England in the Wildcard round proved it belonged. With the addition of WR’s Anquan Boldin and Dante’ Stallworth, the Ravens have recommitted themselves to QB Joe Flacco and the passing game. Stallworth will most likely miss the first half of the season with a foot injury, but Flacco already has plenty of other weapons to throw the ball to.. They also took a hit on defense when their first round draft pick, LB Sergio Kindle, injured his head in an off-field accident and could be lost for the season. None the less, this team appears ready to pick up where it left off for an even deeper run in 2010 – OVER.

Pittsburgh Steelers – Win Total Prediction: 8 ½

Starting QB Ben Rothlisberger will miss at least the first four games of the regular season because of an NFL suspension. In his place will most likely be Byron Leftwich, but do not be surprised if Head Coach Mike Tomlin works Dennis Dixon into the mix as well. The big question for this team is what happens when Big Ben does come back? While team unity appears to be pretty good at this point, this is still a very fluid situation that could go either way as Roethlisberger attempts to earn his way back into the team’s good graces – OVER.

Cincinnati Bengals – Win Total Prediction: 8

In an effort to improve a passing game that finished the 2009 season ranked 26th in the league, Cincinnati drafted TE Jermaine Gresham in the first round to provide QB Carson Palmer a bigger presence over the middle of the field. In a surprise move they also added veteran WR Terrell Owens as a solid possession receiver and potential deep threat. The combination of Chad Ochocinco and Owens could be an explosive one but also runs the risk of imploding this team. So far all parties are happy, but let us see what happens after one of them goes a whole game without a catch or the team suffers an ugly loss due to a poor performance by Palmer – UNDER.

Cleveland Browns – Win Total Prediction: 5 ½

Ever since former head coach/general manager Mike Holmgren took over as Cleveland’s new team president, optimism that the Browns are poised for a breakout season continues to grow. One of his first moves was to sign veteran single-caller Jake Delhomme as his starting quarterback. His next was to use the draft to add some playmakers on defense. First round pick CB Joe Hadden brings a style of play that should make an immediate impact on a team that was ranked 29th against the pass and 31st overall. The Browns also added FS T.J Ward in the second round and SS Larry Asante in the fifth to add some depth to the secondary. Cleveland will not be a worst to first story, but should be able to win more games than last year – OVER.
