135th Preakness Stakes on NBC
Saturday, May 15, 2010
Post time approx. 6:05 PM ET

Super Saver and jockey Calvin Borel will try to take the next step to becoming racing’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978 when they team up for the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes at historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore this Saturday afternoon.
Borel piloted the three-year old bay colt to a win at Churchill Downs on May 1st, and will try and win the second leg of the famed Triple Crown before heading to the daunting Belmont Stakes to claim the coveted title that only 11 horses have managed since 1919.
But first he will have to get by a field of 11 other horses — two short of the maximum — chasing a $1 million purse around the 1-3/16 mile course.

This Saturday may 15th is the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland. Better known as the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness is a grade I stakes race for three year old Thoroughbreds with a total prize purse of $1,000,000. It is contested on a dirt track over a distance of 1 3/16 mile making it the shortest of the three Triple Crown races. Post time for the race is scheduled for 6:15 P.M. (ET).
The most exciting aspect of this race is to see if the winner of the Kentucky Derby, Super Saver can successfully add the second jewel in pursuit of the elusive Triple Crown of horse racing. The third race is the Belmont Stakes, scheduled to be run on June 5th.
In the history of these races dating back to the late 1800’s only 11 horses have ever won all three. The last Triple Crown winner was back in 1978 when Affirmed accomplished this feat. 11 horses have won the first two legs, but failed to capture the third with a loss in the Belmont. Right now the current odds have Super Saver at +475 he will win the next two races and -700 he will not.
Here is a look at the current odds for all 12 horses currently listed in the field for Saturday’s race.

Since 2000, only three of the horses who were favorites at the start of the Kentucky Derby have finished in the money, and this year’s 136th running of the Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be no different.
Already scratched from the 2010 lineup was heavily favored, Todd Pletcher’s Eskendereya, whose dramatic withdrawal because of a leg ailment was only to be followed by another Pletcher frontrunner–Rule, who came out of his Monday workout not looking his best and will not make it to the starting gate on Saturday.
As the news from the Pletcher barn hit the wire, all bets has shifted to another early favorite, Lookin’ At Lucky and his trainer –three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert. The two have found themselves back atop of the pile just ahead of Sidney’s Candy, Conveyance, Super Saver and Blue Grass winner Stately Victor.
