2010 Record: 8-5 Sun Belt Record: 6-2 (T-1st) 2011 Returning Starters: 15; 5 offense, 8 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Larry Blakeney, 161-82-1 (20 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Kenny Edenfield Defensive Coordinators: Jeremy Rowell

2011 Troy Players to Watch: QB Corey Robinson, RB Shawn Southward, LT James Brown, LG Kyle Wilborn, DE Jonathan Massaquoi, LB Xavier Lamb, LB Brannon Bryan, S LaDarrius Madden

2011 Troy Strengths:
Robinson is arguably the top Quarterback in the league. Southward offers versatility in the backfield. Brown is a massive presence at left tackle. Massaquoi is a ferocious pass-rusher who can take over a game. Linebackers Lamb, Bryan and Kanorris Davis are veteran playmakers. The secondary and kicking game are solid.

2011 Troy Weaknesses:
Troy must replace its top three wideouts, including leading receiver Jerrel Jemigan. Three positions on the offensive line remain unsettled. Someone will have to emerge in the return game after the departure of the electrifying Jemigan.

2011 Troy Offense:

The Trojans needed a boost at quarterback last year, especially when veteran Jamie Hampton went down with an October leg fracture. Corey Robinson more than filled the bill, throwing for 28 touchdowns, a 63.6 completion mark and almost 300 yards per game while taking almost every non-Wildcat-formation snap. There’s no reason to believe the Sun Belt’s Freshman of the Year and New Orleans Bowl MVP won’t be that guy, if the offensive front rounds into shape. And that’s a big “if” since three inexperienced hands will be teaming with senior tackle James Brown and junior guard Kyle Wilborn the latter joining part-time starter Jacob Creech in coming off shoulder surgeries. If the line does shape up, an offense that averaged 34.1 points last year should be productive. The top three receivers are gone, including the Sun Belt’s all-time all-purpose yardage leader in Jerrel Jernigan, and Robinson needs some new receivers to emerge, especially with Chip Reeves and Jamel Johnson ruled ineligible after spring practice. Diminutive Shawn Southward has led all Trojan rushers each of the past two years and is still just a junior. He averaged 5.4 per rush with seven scores last year. Backup Chris Anderson will bounce between running back and H-receiver this year.

2011 Troy Defense:

On paper, the Trojans feature one of the nation’s most experienced returning defenses, especially in the secondary. But that unit allowed over 30 points per game and 26 rushing scores last year, and improvement up front was a focus in the spring. All-league end Jonathan Massaquoi had 13.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for a loss as a sophomore, but the other slots are question marks, especially at nose tackle with returnee Emmanuel Dudley missing the spring with injuries. Things are much better in the secondary, where injuries ravaged Troy last year. The result, however, is that Troy has five returnees who have significant starting experience. Bryan Willis, Jimmie Anderson and Chris Pickett have all started at the corners; Barry Valcin returns at free safety after missing all of 2010 with an ankle injury; and strong safety LaDarrius Madden led the secondary in tackles (49). But Madden may not even start with impressive junior college transfer Brynden Trawick available. Middle linebacker Xavier Lamb led Troy in tackles last year (91) and former walk-on Brannon Bryan was a late-season surprise in the linebacker corps.

2011 Troy Special Teams:

Jerrel Jernigan cannot be replaced, so look for multiple players to fill his role as the team’s leading punt and kick returner. Senior Michael Taylor will handle the kickoff and place-kicking duties. Senior Will Goggans will handle the punting.

2011 Troy Predictions:

Troy has won or shared five straight Sun Belt Conference titles and whipped Ohio 48–21 in the New Orleans Bowl last year. Unless Robinson hits a sophomore jinx or the offensive line fails to jell, ranking in the nation’s top 20 in passing and total offense (11th and 17th last year) won’t be a surprise. But Troy’s defense ranked 89th nationally in 2010, the lowest of any conference champion, and gave up over 45 points per game during a four-game midseason stretch. If the Trojans are going to contend for a sixth title, they may have to win some shootouts along the way.

2010 Record: 2-10 MAC Record: 1-7 (T-5th, East) 2011 Returning Starters: 13: 9 offense, 3 defense, punter

Coach: Jeff Quinn, 2-10 (1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Alex Wood Defensive Coordinators: William Inge

2011 Buffalo Players to Watch: QB Jerry Davis, QB Alex Zordlch, WR Alex Neutz, C Josh Vlolantl, DE Steven Means, LB Khalil Mack

2011 Buffalo Strengths:
The Bulls return nine starters on offense and hope that unit takes a quantum leap in production, but defense is likely the backbone of the team. Buffalo had experience and depth in its front defensive seven.

2011 Buffalo Weaknesses:
Although the defense looks sound overall, the Bulls will enter the season with a lot of uncertainty in their secondary, which lost all four starters and has to be rebuilt. The offense has a long way to go, falling to score more than 17 points in any of its last seven games in 2010.

2011 Buffalo Offense:

The key for Buffalo is finding a capable quarterback, which the Bulls have lacked since Zach Maynard transferred to Cal. The Bulls received some good news in early July, when Cincinnati quarterback Chazz Anderson decided to transfer to Buffalo. Anderson will be eligible immediately and is the favorite to win the starting job. Sophomore Alex Zordich, junior Jerry Davis, redshirt freshman Rudy Johnson, and two incoming freshmen will push Anderson for playing time in the fall. Almost anything the Bulls’ running game produces will be an improvement over a year ago, when they finished in a tie with Akron for 101st in the nation. In sophomore Branden Oliver, junior Jeffvon Gill and redshirt freshman James Potts, the Bulls believe they have the personnel to run the football effectively. Oliver, the team’s leading rusher in 2010, started last year because his speed is perfectly suited for the spread and its multiple vertical seams. Gill, a punishing north-south runner, averaged 4.3 yards a carry, while Potts is the most elusive in the group. Based on experience alone, the receivers should be improved. The Bulls return their top five in seniors Marcus Rivers, Terrell Jackson and Ed Young and sophomores Alex Neutz and Fred Lee. The Bulls finished 89th in the nation in passing offense with 184.3 yards per game. While the offensive line limited opponents in terms of sacks, the unit couldn’t create enough space for the running game. Three starters return center Josh Violanti, right guard Graham Whinery and left tackle Pat Wilson as does right tackle Matt Ostrowski, who started the first three games last year before breaking his leg.

2011 Buffalo Defense:

The entire secondary has to be rebuilt, and the two inside linebackers, nose guard and one defensive end must be replaced as well. But Buffalo doesn’t expect much of a drop-off. Junior end Steven Means is up 15 pounds to 250, and coaches would like to see him add another 20 before his senior year. Means is now looking to reduce his celebration penalties, get to the quarterback more often and play better against the run. The linebackers are the strength of the defense, led by sophomore Khalil Mack and junior Jaleel Verser on the outside and junior Scott Pettigrew, who redshirted last year after tearing his ACL, and senior John Syty on the inside. Sophomore Okoye Houston and juniors Isaac Baugh and Ray Anthony Long all saw playing time at safety last season. The most experienced cornerback is sophomore Carlos Lammons, who started four games last season. Senior Joe Petit played on special teams, but will be counted upon for a bigger role in the secondary in 2011. Sophomore Romel Dismuke, a transfer from Cincinnati, was expected to compete for a starting position, but was ruled ineligible in late July.

2011 Buffalo Special Teams:

There is a degree of uncertainty here after the graduation of kicker A.J. Principe. Both Peter Fardon and Jacob Schum worked at placekicker in the spring, but the arrival of incoming freshman Patrick Clarke from Virginia’s Hargrave Military Academy will reopen the competition. Fardon and Schum are both in the mix to be the Bulls’ punter, with Schum holding a slight edge when spring workouts ended. Jackson is the lead return man, with Young sharing the duties.

2011 Buffalo Predictions:

If Quinn keeps up his early pace of recruiting, he’ll have quite a collection of talent in Buffalo before long. His recent signing class may be the best in school history. So the future looks bright. The present, however, isn’t looking so good. Buffalo will be better, but it’s tough to envision this club making too big of a leap in the MAC East standings. The Nov. 19 home game vs. Akron could be a showdown to see which team escapes last place.

The offense should be tough to stop. Jefferson has the senior savvy – and the physical skills – to lead the triple-option attack. There’s no reason to think the running game won’t finish in the top five nationally again. A solid defense returns eight starters.

2011 Air Force Weaknesses:
Air Force’s option offense needs the fullback to be productive, and there’s simply no experience at that position. The running game also needs tailback Asher Clark to stay healthy. Defensively, Air Force has no all-conference caliber performer in the front seven, which could be exploited.

2011 Air Force Offense:

Air Force’s complex, run-obsessed option offense accumulated nearly 4,000 yards rushing last season as a collection of backs cruised behind a lean and athletic offensive line. Here’s a warning for defenses that plan to react to this rushing success by loading up the line of scrimmage this season: This edition of the Falcons boasts the program’s most dangerous passing attack of the 21st century. Tim Jefferson is the rare quarterback who can sprint to a 50-yard touchdown or throw a 50-yard touchdown. Jefferson is poised to complete one of the more impressive careers in Air Force football history. He’s quiet and dislikes attention, but he’s grown into a steady, distinctive leader. Connor Dietz is a proven backup. Look for senior wide receiver Zach Kauth to emerge as a star. He’s a big target and is blessed with surprising speed and athleticism. Jefferson can also throw to speedster Mikel Hunter and double-threat receiver/back Jonathan Warzeka. Tackle Jason Kons and guard A.J. Wallerstein lead an undersized yet highly effective line. The Falcons employ a zone blocking scheme, which emphasizes speed and agility over girth, and it’s common to see a Falcon lineman sprinting 20 yards downfield for a key block. The glaring question for the offense is at fullback. Jared Tew, who has graduated, had the power to break tackles at the line of scrimmage and the speed to outrun defensive backs. For the offense to truly soar, either Mike DeWitt or Wesley Cobb must be productive. Senior Asher Clark has delivered a steady, if not sensational, career as the lead running back. He’s grown tougher but remains undersized and will be more effective if Darius Jones provides relief as his backup.

2011 Air Force Defense:

The Falcons boast one of the conference’s more talented defensive backfields, even after the loss of All-American Reggie Rembert. Look for strong safety Brian Lindsay to emerge as a star. He will deliver a bone-rattling, intimidating presence, which is a rarity for this program. Senior cornerback Anthony Wright must rebound from an underachieving season. Linebacker Jordan Waiwaiole has the physical gifts to become a dominating star but must add the required every-down determination and focus. The defensive line is surprisingly fast. That’s the good news. The question will be whether the undersized trio of seniors Zach Payne, Ryan Gardner and Harry Kehs can stand tough against the run. Gardner has potential to become a dangerous pass-rusher, but departed tackle Rick Ricketts could be sorely missed this season.

2011 Air Force Special Teams:

Erik Soderberg made only half of his 10 field goal attempts and was benched at the end of a baffling season. He’s a senior now, and the Falcons hope he bounces back strong. Air Force should be able to make some big plays in the return game; Warzeka is a fantastic kick returner, and either Davis or Wright will be dangerous returning punts.

2011 Air Force Predictions:

The Falcons were close extremely close to a breakout season in 2010, losing to San Diego State, Utah and Oklahoma by an average of 3.3 points. With Jefferson, Wright, Kauth and Warzeka, this team boasts the star power to threaten the top teams Boise State and TCU in the MWC. Air Force will again roll to 300 or so rushing yards per game, and there’s enough talent in the defensive backfield to stifle the pass. If an undersized defense can stop the run, this could be a special season.

2010 Record: 9-4 MWC Record: 5-3 (T-3rd) 2011 Returning Starters: 14: 7 offense, 5 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Rocky Long, First Season

Offensive Coordinators: Andy Ludwig Defensive Coordinators: Rocky Long

2011 San Diego State Players to Watch: QB Ryan Lindley, WR Vincent Brown, WR DeMarco Sampson, C Trask Losefa, CB Jose Perez, P Brian Stahovich

2011 San Diego State Strengths:
The offense features a fourth-year starting quarterback considered an NFL prospect, and Hillman rushed for 1,532 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. Lindley has Hillman and talented tight ends to rely on in the passing game until his young wide receivers mature.

2011 San Diego State Weaknesses:
The Aztecs are young at wide receiver and defensive line, although they feel they’ve recruited well at those positions and have redshirt freshmen in position to contribute. Youngsters could also end up having to contribute in an inexperienced secondary.

2011 San Diego State Offense:

Quarterback Ryan Lindley is on pace to end his career as San Diego State’s all-time leading passer. Lindley made big strides last season, throwing for 3,830 yards and a career-high 28 touchdowns. His completion percentage was up to 57.7, and he was sacked only nine times, down from 15 the previous season. Lindley will be working under his third different offensive coordinator, with Andy Ludwig now in charge of the Aztecs’ attack. Quarterbacks coach Brian Sipe, a former SDSU great, was retained by new coach Rocky Long. Running back Ronnie Hillman gives the Aztecs their top rushing threat since Marshall Faulk in the early 1990s. Hillman was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year after rushing for 1,532 yards and 17 touchdowns. His offseason goal was to add some muscle so he could continue to carry the ball 20 times per game without getting worn down. Tight end Gavin Escobar also starred as a freshman, catching 29 passes for 323 yards, but there are issues at wide receiver with the loss of two 1,000-yard receivers Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson. Dominique Sandifer (23 catches in 2010) was the most experienced returner, but suffered a knee injury and is out for 2011. The Aztecs will have to rely on sophomore Dylan Denso and freshman Ezell Ruffin to emerge as Lindley’s go-to targets. Right guard Nik Embernate heads an offensive line that returns four starters, though Alec Johnson will slide over from left guard to center.

2011 San Diego State Defense:

The Aztecs were much improved on defense last season, allowing only 353.8 yards (down from 382.0 in ’09) and 22.1 points (down from 30.5) per game. Expectations are high this fall, with two of the premier defensive players in the league back for another season linebacker Miles Burris and cornerback Leon McFadden. Burris, a third-year starter on the outside, is a tremendous freelancer who spends a lot of time in opposing backfields. He led the Mountain West in both sacks (9.5) and tackles for a loss (20). McFadden is a shutdown corner who picked off two passes en route to first-team All-MWC honors. He is capable of intercepting five or six passes if teams don’t shy away from his side of the field. San Diego State is hoping hard-hitting Eric Pinkins will man the Aztec safety position in the 3-3-5 alignment. Pinkins missed last season due to a suspension for violating team rules. Logan Ketchum joins Burris as a returning starter at linebacker. Nose tackle Jerome Long, the team’s top defensive lineman, had six tackles for a loss last season.

2011 San Diego State Special Teams:

SDSU has one of the nation’s top punters in Brian Stahovich, a first-team All-MWC pick as a junior last season. Stahovich ranked eighth in the nation at 45-4 yards a punt with 16 fair catches and 18 punts inside the 20-yard line. Last year, the Aztecs addressed their placekicking deficiency with Abel Perez, a local junior college transfer. He hit 17 of 22 field goal attempts with a long of 53 yards and had 28 touchbacks on kickoffs.

2011 San Diego State Predictions:

Long seeks to continue the momentum after a 9–4 season that concluded with the program’s first bowl victory since 1969. Long, who spent 11 years as the coach at New Mexico before joining the SDSU staff in 2009, replaces Brady Hoke, who wasted no time cashing in on the surprise success by lobbying for and getting the Michigan job. Top-notch offensive coordinator Al Borges departed with Hoke, but the defensive philosophy remains the same with Long still on board. The Aztecs have some star power on offense with Lindley and Hillman and should be solid on defense once again. Winning the MWC title will be tough Boise State and TCU are the teams to beat but SDSU should be back in a bowl game for the second straight season.

2010 Record: 13-1 WAC Record: 7-1 (T-1st) 2011 Returning Starters: 14; 6 offense, 7 defense, kicker

Coach: Chris Ault, 219-97-1 (26 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Chris Ault Defensive Coordinators: Andy Buh

2011 Nevada Players to Watch: QB Tyler Lantrip, RB Mike Ball, WR Rlshard Matthews, WR Brandon Wimberly, LB James-Michael Johnson, DT Brett Roy, CB Isaiah Frey, S Duke Williams

2011 Nevada Strengths:
The Pack should have another strong running attack this year behind a veteran line. Nevada’s secondary is as athletic as it has been in years. A senior-stacked linebacker corps will lead a defense that’s expected to take another step forward after a solid 2010 campaign.

2011 Nevada Weaknesses:
Nevada loses a pair of ultra-productive offensive players – Colin Kaepernick and Val Taua. Outside of the offensive line, there’s a lot of inexperience offensively. The Pack has no experienced depth at defensive end, which could lead to a risky blitzed-based scheme.

2011 Nevada Offense:

For the first time since Colin Kaepernick took over the reins of head coach Chris Ault’s Pistol offense in 2007, shattering records along the way, Nevada is looking for a new signal-caller. Who will replace Kaepernick, the only quarterback in NCAA history to pass for 10,000 yards and rush for 4,000 in his career, is still an open question. The smart money to start the season would be on senior Tyler Lantrip, a drop-back passer and Kaepernick’s longtime backup. But redshirt freshman Cody Fajardo, a dual-threat option, could push for playing time early in the season, and sophomore Mason Magleby might be the most athletic quarterback of the group. The good news for the player who wins the job is that he will have an experienced offensive line that returns three starters and one of the better receiving units in the WAC. Senior Rishard Matthews, who emerged as a gamebreaker late in 2010, figures to be Nevada’s top threat. The bad news is that Nevada will not have running back Vai Taua, a three-year starter who teamed with Kaepernick to become the most prolific career rushing duo in NCAA history. Junior speedster Mike Ball, who sat out most of spring drills with a knee injury, is the favorite to get the bulk of the carries. Senior Lampford Mark, another speedster who is recovering from knee surgery in 2010, also will likely see carries if healthy.

2011 Nevada Defense:

Andy Buh, who came from Stanford to coordinate the defense at his alma mater before last season, turned this once-struggling unit into a playmaking bunch that led Nevada to a win over Boston College in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. The Wolf Pack lost at least one front-line starter at every level of the defense, including two-time All-WAC defensive end Dontay Moch. But Nevada still has a solid group of returners, led by middle linebacker James-Michael Johnson. Senior Brett Roy was a productive defensive tackle, and senior corner Isaiah Frey and junior safety Duke Williams are all-conference-caliber players. The Pack will need Johnson, the lone returning captain from last year, and others to step up, both in terms of production and leadership, as Nevada opens 2011 with a treacherous four-game road stretch.

2011 Nevada Special Teams:

Last year, punt returner Rishard Matthews ended Nevada’s 10-year drought without a kick or punt returned for a touchdown. He’s back this season. So, too, is kick returner Mike Ball, who averaged 24.5 yards per return. Also back is kicker Anthony Martinez, who made 11 of 15 field goal attempts. That included a gamewinning 34-yard overtime field goal to upset Boise State. Nevada is in search of a kickoff specialist and punter.

2011 Nevada Predictions:

A repeat of Nevada’s historic 2010 is unlikely with the loss of key players and a murderer’s row schedule that includes road games against Oregon, Texas Tech and Boise State. But Nevada’s offense should still be able to move the ball, although not at the same pace as in recent years, and the Wolf Pack’s defense should be improved. If both are true, a favorable conference schedule that includes home dates against fellow WAC favorites Fresno State and Hawaii could lead to another conference championship and a seventh consecutive bowl appearance.

2010 Record: 2-10 WAC Record: 1-7 (8th) 2011 Returning Starters: 15; 6 offense, 7 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Mike MacIntyre, 1-12 (1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: John DeFilippo Defensive Coordinators: Kent Baer

2011 New Mexico State Players to Watch: QB Andrew Manley, HB Kenny Turner, WR Taveon Rogers, UG Sioell Fakalata, CB Donyae Coleman, K Tyler Stampler

2011 New Mexico State Strengths:
The offensive line is experienced, which can only help what should be a good run game and provide Manley extra time in the pocket. The Aggies have all-league potential at kicker and In the return game. Turner can be one of the league’s best if he can stay healthy.

2011 New Mexico State Weaknesses:
There is no depth, and starting an unproven sophomore quarterback could lead to growing pains. So could the fact NMSU is on offensive coordinator NO. 3 as Walker enters season No. 3 as head coach. The Aggies have yet to prove under Walker they can score enough to be competitive.

2011 New Mexico State Offense:

The Aggies enter the season with their fourth offensive coordinator in the past four years. The team hired former Kent State head coach Doug Martin in late March to replace Mike Dunbar. Martin will run a spread three- and four-wide receiver sets, single-back formations with an H-back. Expect the Aggie offense to feature short passes five to seven yards within the line of scrimmage and to set up the run off the passing game. NMSU has ranked near the bottom of the country in most offensive categories the past two years. Ironically, the one area where the team appears relatively set is at quarterback. Senior Matt Christian is a steady player with average mobility, while sophomore hot-shot Andrew Manley is a big body (6’4″, 225 pounds) with a strong arm. Manley will likely play at some point this season, if not in the team’s opener against Ohio. Last year’s leading rusher, Kenny Turner, will line up at H-back, getting carries while also motioning into the slot as a wide receiver. Junior running back Robert Clay is a between-the-tackles pounder. The Aggies return senior offensive tackle Aundre McGaskey to anchor the right side of the line. Senior Sioeli Fakalata played guard last year but could slide over to center in 2010. A handful of newcomers will push for playing time, led by junior college transfer Andrew Kersten.

2011 New Mexico State Defense:

It was a domino affect on the defensive side of the ball last year. The Aggies didn’t win one-on-one matchups on the line. The lack of a push up front allowed their undersized linebackers to get swallowed in the running game and forced their secondary to cover opposing receivers for too long. The result was nine sacks total, 207.1 rushing yards and 39.5 points allowed per contest. In short, the front-seven needs to play better. It starts at defensive end, where Donte Savage and Pierre Fils regressed last year after respectable sophomore seasons. Both are undersized but athletic and need to use their speed and burst to their advantage. Fils, though, could see more time at tackle. Linebacker Alexander LaVoy was brought in this offseason and will push middle linebacker Boyblue Aoelua, who was good against the run last season but a step slow in pass coverage. Weak-side linebacker B.J. Adolpho has potential and could be in for a good junior season. The secondary brought in reinforcements and could be a team strength. It will help if cornerback Jonte Green realizes his potential and safety George Callender stays injury free.

2011 New Mexico State Special Teams:

Kicker Tyler Stampler is a weapon, converting 16 of 19 field goal tries in 2010, including five from beyond 40 yards. Punter Jake Capraro must improve on his 36.9-yard average. Taveon Rogers had more than 1,400 yards in kick returns last year and remains one of the WAC’s best return men.

2011 New Mexico State Predictions:

The Aggies should be better in 2011 they really can’t get any worse. Coach DeWayne Walker is a worker and, despite being outmatched from a talent standpoint on most Saturdays, his teams remain in line and play hard. The key to the season will be the play up front along the offensive and defensive lines. NMSU will need to stay healthy on the offensive side of the ball and record more than nine sacks on defense. The Aggies will also rely on the continued development of Manley, who looks to be the real deal at quarterback. But even if the defense improves and the offense adjusts quickly to Martin’s scheme, it’s tough to see the Aggies making too much of a move in the WAC.

2010 Record: 10-3 C-USA Record: 6-2 (T-2nd, West) 2011 Returning Starters: QB G.J. Kinne, RB Trey Watts, WR Damaris Johnson, LB Shawn Jackson, LB Cumelius Amick, CB Marco Nelson

Coach: Bill Blankenship, First Season

Offensive Coordinators: Greg Peterson Defensive Coordinators: Brent Guy

2011 Tulsa Players to Watch: QB G.J. Kinne, RB Jamad Williams, HB Charles Clay, C Trent Dupy, WR Damaris Johnson, S DeAundre Brown

2011 Tulsa Strengths:
Thanks to the arm of Kinne and the record-setting ability of Johnson – plus six other returning starters on offense – this team should be among the nation’s top 10 in scoring and production. The Golden Hurricane defense has displayed a knack to create turnovers at critical moments, and the special teams are solid.

2011 Tulsa Weaknesses:
Tulsa’s shaky defense will be taxed all season. The Golden Hurricane play stellar offensive teams in the non-eonference schedule, and things don’t get much easier in shootout-friendly Conference USA. Statistically, Tulsa spent most of last year as the nation’s worst pass defense. The coaching staff changes could make for some speed bumps.

2011 Tulsa Offense:

Tulsa has had one of college football’s top-five offenses in three of the past four seasons. But when Bill Blankenship was named as Todd Graham’s successor as head coach last January, the biggest question was the following: Would the no-huddle, fast-paced offense continue? Senior quarterback G.J. Kinne, Conference USA’s reigning Offensive Player of the Year, will guide the new attack. Kinne, who began his career at Texas, threw 31 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions as a junior. He’ll have one of the nation’s top weapons in wide receiver Damaris Johnson, who is the NCAA’s all-purpose career yardage leader through three seasons. Former walk-on Trey Watts enters the fall as the starting tailback. The son of legendary Oklahoma Sooners quarterback J.C. Watts will be complemented by sophomore Ja’Terian Douglas and junior Alex Singleton. Junior Willie Carter will take over at H-back, a potent weapon in the Tulsa offense. The entire starting offensive line will return and is anchored by seniors Tyler Holmes and Clint Anderson on the left side.

2011 Tulsa Defense:

New defensive coordinator Brent Guy, a former head coach at Utah State, has installed a 4-3 base defense, which differs from the 3-3-5 scheme that has been in place at Tulsa for years. Guy will look to improve a defense that has struggled against the pass in recent seasons. The position group to watch will be the defensive line. While Guy is pleased with his starters defensive ends Cory Dorris and Tyrunn Walker and tackles Darrell Zellars and Derrick Jackson depth could be an issue during this transition. Curnelius Arnick led the team in tackles last season and has shifted to middle linebacker. Shawn Jackson, an aggressive tackler, will play weak-side linebacker, and DeAundre Brown (who sat out last year for academic reasons) will play Cane, a hybrid linebacker-safety. Safety Marco Nelson earned some Freshman All-America recognition last season after recording six interceptions. Safety Dexter McCoil also had six picks, and that pair will bring experience and athleticism to the secondary. John Flanders has earned one corner spot, while Lowell Rose has emerged as a starter on the other side.

2011 Tulsa Special Teams:

Tulsa might have the best kick returner in the country. Senior Damaris Johnson finished his junior season as the nation’s all-time leader in kickoff return yards. He had four games last season with more than 100 kickoff return yards. Kicker Kevin Fitzpatrick, known for his accuracy, was one of the best in Conference USA last season.

2011 Tulsa Predictions:

Tulsa finished No. 24 in the final AP poll, and with 15 starters returning, expectations would typically be high. But the non-conference schedule is a chore. The Golden Hurricane will play at Oklahoma (Sept. 3), host Oklahoma State (Sept. 17) and travel to Boise State (Sept. 24) in the season’s first month. The important thing is to avoid letting the tough early stretch dictate what happens the rest of the year because the road is paved for Tulsa to perhaps win its first C-USA title since 2005. The Golden Hurricane have only one cross-division game (UCF) on the road, and they host SMU and Houston, the two teams they will be battling in the West.

2010 Record: 6-7 C-USA Record: 5-3 (T-2nd, East) 2011 Returning Starters: 15; 6 offense, 7 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Ruffin McNeill, 6-7 (1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Lincoln Riley Defensive Coordinators: Brian Mitchell

2011 East Carolina Players to Watch: QB Dominique Davis, WR Lance Lewis, WR Michael Bowman, WR Dayon Arrington, RT Grant Hamer, SS Bradley Jacobs, DE Derrell Johnson, CB Derek Blacknall

2011 East Carolina Strengths:
Davis is a highlight-reel quarterback who passed for 37 touchdowns and ran for nine a year ago. He will team with speedster Lance Lewis to provide one of the most effective and exciting passing duos in the nation. Mike Barbour’s accuracy on field goal attempts is a nice thing to have.

2011 East Carolina Weaknesses:
How much can a porous defense improve in one season? Perhaps the defensive change will allow more flow for the athletes as McNeill will be able to use more of his packages that made him so successful at Texas Tech.

2011 East Carolina Offense:

Dominique Davis joined the Pirates in the fall, jumped in at quarterback, set 15 school records, and ranked among national leaders in completions per game (30.2), points produced per game (21.4) and touchdown passes (37). So imagine what he can do now with a whole year in the system. Of course, Davis will have to produce without Conference USA Player of the Year Dwayne Harris at wide receiver and with a rebuilt offensive line and running game. The feeling around Greenville, though, is that Davis will do just fine, thanks. Even without Harris, receiver remains one of the Pirates’ deepest positions. Good thing. Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley usually has four of them on the field at the same time. Senior Lance Lewis, who had a team-high 14 touchdowns, headlines the returning receivers. Center Dalton Faulds and tackle Grant Harner are anchors on a line that survived a rash of injuries in the spring that perhaps increased depth in the unit. Reggie Bullock, a transfer from Arizona Western, and sophomore Michael Dobson look like they can jump-start the running game. The 5’9″ Bullock is a prototype run-and-shoot back. Then again, with Davis throwing all over the place, the running game may not be a big issue for the Pirates.

2011 East Carolina Defense:

There’s no way to sugarcoat this: The Pirates were awful on defense last year, ranking last in the nation by allowing a staggering 478.8 yards per game. But there is hope, with a new 3-4 alignment and more depth up front and in the secondary. Junior Michael Brooks is the new nose tackle, and he’ll be flanked by returnees Derrell Johnson and Matt Milner on the ends. Junior college transfer John Lattimore should push for time here, too. Justin Dixon and Marke Powell return from injuries to man the outside linebacking spots, and Ty Holmes had a great spring in the middle. Newcomer JoJo Blanks may be too good to keep out of the lineup, but the revamped linebacking crew is thin. Hard-hitting safety Bradley Jacobs joins All-C-USA stalwart Emanuel Davis in the secondary, along with former special teams standout Damon Magazu and new starting cornerback Derek Blacknall.

2011 East Carolina Special Teams:

Senior Michael Barbour returns as the placekicker after making 16 of 18 field goal attempts last season. Ben Ryan is back at punter after averaging 39.4 yards per attempt. Ryan also was the kickoff specialist. The return game is up in the air. Michael Bowman and Michael Dobson could take over for the departed Dwayne Harris, but there are other speedy options.

2011 East Carolina Predictions:

Ruffin McNeill took over a two-time championship program that lost 28 seniors. The Pirates went 6–7, falling off down the stretch due in large part to poor play from the defense. But while rebuilding on both sides of the ball, McNeill got his alma mater to the Military Bowl. The Pirates broke school attendance records and nearly every ECU offensive record, and then followed up with a solid recruiting class. McNeill didn’t like losing so many games last year, but he lost a lot of weight this summer after undergoing bariatric surgery. Improving the defense is another weighty issue, though. The transition to the 3-4 scheme needs to go smoothly. The schedule is not kind: East Carolina opens with South Carolina in Charlotte and hosts Virginia Tech and North Carolina early in the season. If they survive, the Pirates may be ready to raise their sails in conference play.

2010 Record: 7-6 Big East Record: 3-4 (T-5th) 2011 Returning Starters: 13; 4 offense, 7 defense, punter, kicker

Coach: Charlie Strong, 7-6 (1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Mike Sanford Defensive Coordinators: Vance Bedford

2011 Louisville Players to Watch: WR Josh Bellamy, RB Victor Anderson, SS Shenard Holton, FS Hakeem Smith, DE B.J. Butler, RB Jeremy Wright, LB Dexter Heyman

2011 Louisville Strengths:
Skill players at receiver and running back could potentially make the Cards explosive. Bellamy has the tools to be one of the league’s best. Defensively, Louisville returns a solid front seven, particularly a line that features versatile sophomore B.J. Butler.

2011 Louisville Weaknesses:
The Cards are breaking in two inexperienced starters at comerback. It could prove to be the weak link on an otherwise strong defense. With a new starting quarterback and Strong’s dedication to running the ball, an offensive line with four new starters likely will dictate how effective the Cards can be.

2011 Louisville Offense:

Charlie Strong made his name on defense, but he likes to attack with the subtlety of a punch in the chops, controlling the football on the ground. He asks his quarterback to throw medium-range balls effectively and places a premium on avoiding turnovers. That formula worked in 2010 as the Cardinals finished first in the Big East in rushing and third in total offense. But Strong must work a new quarterback, new halfback and four new offensive linemen into the starting lineup, which makes the 2011 outlook as cloudy as it seemed a year ago. Will Stein, a former walk-on, should get first call at quarterback. Strong loves his intangibles so much that he has nicknamed Stein “Brett Favre.” But Stein had better make plays; freshman Teddy Bridgewater arrives from Miami as Louisville’s most acclaimed quarterback recruit since Brian Brohm. At tailback, look for Strong to replace Bilal Powell with two guys Jeremy Wright and Victor Anderson. Wright is the speed guy. Anderson, who has battled injuries, is a better receiver. Neither will be as tough between the tackles as Powell. Josh Bellamy has the ability to slip behind the secondary. Michaelee Harris and Stephan Robinson will push their way into the receiving lineup. Center Mario Benavides is the only returning starter on the offensive line.

2011 Louisville Defense:

Strong loves the aggressiveness of his young defensive linemen, especially B.J. Butler and Brandon Dunn. He believes they could team with veteran defensive end Greg Scruggs to become the strength of this unit. Injuries are always a concern as Strong tries to rebuild Louisville’s numbers. Linebacker is a work in progress. Dexter Heyman and Daniel Brown are tough, experienced guys who can run, but Brandon Heath, the unit’s leader in 2010, will be difficult to replace. Depth is a major issue. Preston Brown should contribute. There is a reason Strong signed six defensive backs in his top-30 recruiting class. The Cardinals don’t return any proven cover corners. The absence of man-to-man experience will put pressure on the pass rush as well as the safeties. Of course, the safeties were the biggest questions on the team last season and they delivered. Strong safety Hakeem Smith led the team in tackles, and free safety Shenard Holton was second. They led a unit that was ninth in the nation in pass defense.

2011 Louisville Special Teams:

Special teams were a big part of the Cards’ success last season. Wright’s 95-yard kickoff return against Southern Mississippi changed the momentum of the game and led to their Beef to’ Brady’s Bowl win. Bellamy should boost the punt return game as well. Chris Philphott, who handled kicking and punting duties last season, showed his improving leg strength with 16 touchbacks on kickoffs, and he even had a 73-yard punt.

2011 Louisville Predictions:

Odd-numbered seasons are the ones when the schedule tilts against the Cardinals. They’re on the road against Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia, Connecticut and South Florida (a spot where they have lost all four visits). The key on offense will be the ability of either Stein or Bridgewater to make defenses respect the passing game, because the personnel isn’t there to duplicate the power running game that carried the 2010 team to a 7–6 record. The run defense should improve from seventh-best in the Big East, but Strong will have to rush two young cornerbacks into the rotation. Louisville is clearly on the right track under Strong, but the Cardinals might take a step back in 2011 before taking a big leap in ’12.

2010 Record: 6-6 PAC 12 Record: 4-5 (T-6th) 2011 Returning Starters: 14: 8 offense, 6 defense

Coach: Dennis Erickson, 25-24 (4 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Noel Mazzone Defensive Coordinators: Craig Bray

2011 Arizona State Players to Watch: MLB Vontaze Burfiet, DE Junior Onyeali, DT Will Sutton, RB Cameron Marshall, WR Gerell Robinson, WR Mike Willie, RB Deantre Lewis, C Garth Gerhart

2011 Arizona State Strengths:
The defense is experienced and plays with an attitude. Burfiet is one of the top linebackers in the country. and Onyeall is a nuisance at defensive end. On offense, the Sun Devils have speed in several spots and should break big plays. The offensive line returns all five starters.

2011 Arizona State Weaknesses:
Brock Osweiler is the only experienced quarterback on the roster – and he has all of two career starts. Omar Bolden’s knee injury leaves ASU dangerously thin at cornerback. One of the returnees, Deveron Carr, is effective, but his last two seasons have ended in shoulder surgery.

2011 Arizona State Offense:

ASU suffered a huge blow in the offseason when starting quarterback Steven Threet retired because of post-concussion syndrome. Threet’s retirement leaves ASU woefully thin at the most important position. Junior starter Brock Osweiler is the only quarterback in the program with any experience, and he’s started only two games. Osweiler has the physical tools he’s 6’8″ with a strong arm and good mobility but his accuracy is a concern: He completed only 56.9 percent of his passes last season, and that won’t get it done in offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone’s no-huddle attack that places a premium on the quarterback getting rid of the ball quickly and putting it in the right place. Compounding matters is the fact that ASU lost starting wideout T.J. Simpson to a torn ACL during spring ball; Simpson was the Sun Devils’ best deep threat. Fortunately, ASU has enough receiving depth to make up for Simpson’s absence. More important, the Sun Devils should have their best rushing attack in years. Four starters on the offensive line return, as do a stable of talented running backs, led by junior Cameron Marshall. But the season likely will rise or fall on Osweiler. And no one knows whether he can get the job done.

2011 Arizona State Defense:

The Sun Devils lost two of their three best defensive players in the summer. Tackle Lawrence Guy opted to turn pro after his junior year, and All-Pac-10 cornerback Omar Bolden suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury. With Guy and Bolden, ASU might have had one of the top-10 defenses in the country. Without them, though, the Sun Devils still have enough talent and experience to be one of the best units in the Pac-12. They return four experienced players on the defensive front sophomore defensive end Junior Onyeali could have a 10-sack season and all three starting linebackers, including middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who may be the best defensive player in the country. Burfict is a beast he led the team with 90 tackles last season and the rare player who must be accounted for on every snap. Bolden’s loss will hurt, particularly in a conference with so many talented quarterbacks. But ASU has enough athleticism and depth in the secondary to weather his absence.

2011 Arizona State Special Teams:

Redshirt freshman Alex Garoutte got off to a slow start replacing kicker Thomas Weber, a former All American. He struggled in ASU’s first few spring practices, but it was only jitters. Garoutte, who has a strong leg, improved as the weeks passed. Junior college transfer punter Josh Hubner has an explosive leg. The Sun Devils have several return specialists, including Jamal Miles.

2011 Arizona State Predictions:

In mid-April Arizona State unveiled new uniforms, new helmets and a new branding campaign entitled, “Fear the Fork.” But will they still be the same ol’ Sun Devils? Dennis Erickson’s team hasn’t played in a bowl game the last three seasons. Erickson, whose contract runs through 2012, is considered to be sitting on one of the hottest seats in college football. The good news: The Sun Devils return 11 starters and are considered one of the favorites in the Pac-12’s South Division. If that experience can turn the close losses of 2010 ASU lost to Wisconsin, Oregon, Oregon State, USC and Stanford by a combined 20 points into victories, the Sun Devils could challenge for a conference title. But if the ASU struggles again, Erickson may fear for his job.
