2009 Record: 4-8 PAC 10 Record: 2-7 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 4 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Dennis Erickson (At Arizona State: 19-18, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Noel Mazzone Defensive Coordinators: Craig Bray

2010 Arizona State Players to Watch: LB Vontaze Burfict, DT Lawrence Guy, WR Aaron Pflugrad, LB Brandon Magee, WR Kerry Taylor, DT Saia Falahola, CB Omar Bolden

2010 Arizona State Strengths:
The defensive line and linebacker groups are fast, athletic and feisty, with Burfict and Guy leading the way. If Burfict needs to improve in one area, It’s avoiding the personal foul penalties that plagued him in 2009. Guy may be a big year away from leaving early for the NFL.

2010 Arizona State Weaknesses:
A radical offensive retooling is never easy, and neither of the Sun Devils’ top Quarterback candidates, Steven Threet or Brock Osweiler, has much familiarity with the spread attack. The defensive secondary is oh-so-green around Bolden, with many of the starters and top replacements former offensive players.

2010 Arizona State Offense:

Coach Dennis Erickson hired friend and former Oregon State assistant coach Noel Mazzone to pump up the offense after two of the worst seasons in school history. ASU implemented a spread attack similar to the Houston/Texas Tech model in spring practice, although the Sun Devils plan to integrate a tight end rather than exclusively play four wideouts and a running back. Job one is picking a quarterback. Michigan transfer Steven Threet and holdovers Brock Osweiler and Samson Szakacsy are the candidates, although Szakacsy missed spring practice because of a shoulder injury. Neither Threet nor Osweiler took command in the spring. Wide receivers Kerry Taylor, Gerell Robinson and Oregon transfer Aaron Pflugrad will be the main targets, and downhill runner Cameron Marshall will be the lone back. The offensive line, beset by injuries a year ago, was banged up in the spring and remains unsettled.

2010 Arizona State Defense:

ASU led the high-powered Pac-10 in five defensive categories in 2009, including total defense, where it finished 13th in the nation. Thus Erickson’s disappointment over a 4-8 season that ended with six straight losses. The coach still recruits speed, and the Sun Devils worked in both 4-3 and 3-4 fronts during the spring, promising some 3-4 looks this season to get more of that speed on the field. Sophomore middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict a gifted, physical player who is sometimes prone’ to over-aggressiveness, is the lynchpin. He was named the Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2009. Outside linebacker Brandon Magee, a junior and one of three starting linebackers from Carson (Calif.) Centennial High, should mesh well in his first chance to start. Junior defensive tackle Lawrence Guy, a 300pounder who can move his feet, anchors the line. Guy was a first-team Freshman All-American in 2008, and he led ASU with 4.5 sacks last season. Cornerback Omar Bolden, granted an extra year of eligibility after playing briefly last season, is a big hitter.

2010 Arizona State Special Teams:

Senior Thomas Weber won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s best placekicker as a freshman in 2007, when he made 24 field goals, and his 51 career field goals trail only Luis Zendejas in school history. But he’s coming off a groin injury that rendered him ineffective last season. Former walk-on Trevor Hankins led the Pac-10 with a 44.2-yard punting average in 2009. Bolden is a return threat; he had a kick return for a touchdown against Louisiana-Monroe last season.

2010 Arizona State Predictions:

The Sun Devils performed offensive transplant surgery in the offseason and are committed to a wide-open attack – always in the shotgun, passing perhaps 70 percent of the time. The change was as necessary as it was radical after a composite 9-15 stretch during 2008-09 that included six-game losing streaks in each of those years. The next question: Can quarterback candidates Osweiler or Threet make it work?

2009 Record: 8-5 PAC 10 Record: 6-3 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 8 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Jim Harbaugh (At Stanford 17-20, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: David Shaw Defensive Coordinators: Vic Fangio

2010 Stanford Players to Watch: QB Andrew Luck, RG David DeCastro, WR/KR Chris Owusu, NT Sione Fua, LB Shayne Skov, SS Delano Howell

2010 Stanford Strengths:
One of the most talented quarterbacks in the country, combined with a veteran offensive line, give the offense a first-rate foundation. The defensive front seven should be solid. Stanford has more quality depth, the result of Harbaugh’s recruiting, than It has possessed in ages.

2010 Stanford Weaknesses:
If the running game sputters, defenses will play for the pass and make life difficult for Luck and his unproven receivers. Speed is an issue defensively, and the secondary has as many questions as answers. The schedule is also very difficult, especially once October begins.

2010 Stanford Offense:

With Toby Gerhart off to the NFL – along with his 1,800-plus yards and 28 touchdowns – the Cardinal will use a combination of tailbacks to generate a steady ground game. But the emphasis will shift to the passing game and quarterback Andrew Luck, who played a complementary role to Gerhart last season but must be Stanford’s primary playmaker in the fall. Luck worked hard in the offseason to improve his decision-making and grasp of the offense. And he has a veteran line in front of him (four returning starters). But the truth is that Luck’s success depends largely on the receivers, a group that was mediocre in 200g. Ryan Whalen has sure hands but average speed. Chris Owusu is a burner but drops as many important passes as he catches. And the youngsters, Jamal-Rashad Patterson and Drew Terrell, haven’t proven a thing. Qne potential target for Luck is tight end Levine Tiololo, a 6-8 freshman who emerged in spring practice as the top replacement for steady Jim Dray. If the passing game thrives, then the running lanes should open for Gerhart’s replacements: senior Jeremy Stewart and sophomores Stepfan Taylor and Tyler Gaffney.

2010 Stanford Defense:

The Cardinal has a new coordinator, a new base formation and a new approach – several ’09 firststringers are playing different positions. The three-man line, anchored by Sione Fua, should be solid. But the linebacking unit has been revamped. The starters on the outside are Chase Thomas and Thomas Keiser, who each played defensive end last season, registering 13 combined sacks. Owen Marecic, the best blocking fullback in the conference, is now set to start at one of the inside positions while still playing offense, too. And sophomore Shayne Skov, a part-time starter in ‘og, will man the other inside slot. Look for him to emerge as an all-conference player, if not this season then next. Aside from strong safety Delano Howell, there are issues in the secondary – as there seem to be every year for the Cardinal. Former receiver Richard Sherman is back for his sixth year, hoping to be a more consistent cornerback The other cornerback position and free safety are wide open. How desperate are things? Backup quarterback Alex Loukas is being given a look at free safety.

2010 Stanford Special Teams:

Senior Nate Whitaker made 16 of 22 field goals last season. Chris Owusu gives Stanford one of the best kick returners in the country; he returned three for touchdowns last season. But there’s competition at punter between David Green and Daniel Zychlinski, and at punt returner.

2010 Stanford Predictions:

With a talented quarterback, veteran offensive line and experience at every unit defensively, Stanford could build on last season’s success and compete for the conference title. But there isn’t much margin for error. If the defense doesn’t improve and the passing game sputters, the Cardinal could drop into the lower half of the conference.

2010 Oklahoma Players to Watch: QB Landry Jones, RB DeMarco Murray, WR Ryan Broyles, DE Jeremy Beal, DT Adrian Taylor, LB Travis Lewis, FS Quinton Carter

2010 Oklahoma Strengths:
A pair of proven playmakers – Murray and Broyles – are back to carry an offense that should be improved. Defensively, the Sooners boast All-American candidates in Beal and Lewis. The safety position should also be strong with veterans Jonathan Nelson and Carter.

2010 Oklahoma Weaknesses:
An offensive line that never found its footing last season has to replace its best two blockers in Trent Williams and Brody Eldridge. Depth at defensive tackle Is also a concem, especially if Adrian Taylor is slow to return from abroken ankle he suffered in the Sun Bowl.

2010 Oklahoma Offense:

Landry Jones, who nlled in for injured Sam Bradford last year, is back with a year of experience. After an up-and-down season, Jones surged late, tossing for a career-high 418 yards in the Sun Bowl his top two playmakers, running back DeMarco Murray and slot receiver Ryan Broyles, are also both back to aid in the attack. Murray, who has almost 2,500 career rushing yards, will shoulder most of the rushing load. The competition for backup carries will be intense, with Mossis Madu, Jermie Calhoun, Jonathan Miller, Marshall Musil, Brennan Clay and Roy Finch all in the mix. The Sooners should be much improved at receiver, with Broyles leading the way. Last season, the Norman native set a school single-season record with 89 catches, despite missing two games with a fractured shoulder blade. Dejuan Miller, Jaz Reynolds, Brandon Caleb and true freshman Kenny Stills round out the rotation. Trent Ratterree and James Hanna, who both filled in after Jermaine Gresham went down with a seasonending knee injury, will share time at tight end again. Ben Habern, back from a broken nbula, returns as the starting center. The guards will be Stephen Good and Tyler Evans, who combined to log 11 starts last season. Donald Stephenson, suspended last season for off-the-neld reasons, is the projected starter at left tackle, while Jarvis Jones and Cory Brandon will battle at right tackle.

2010 Oklahoma Defense:

Tackle Gerald McCoy, the NO. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, will be impossible to replace. But the Sooners have enough pieces left over to form another formidable defense. Up front, end Jeremy Beal is a conference Player of the Year candidate after tallying a team-high 11 sacks last season. Frank Alexander, arguably the team’s most athletic player, will man the other end. The Sooners are young, but talented, at linebacker. Two-time leading tackler Travis Lewis is the lone veteran. The success of the secondary will depend on the transition at cornerback, where the Sooners will be breaking in a pair of nrst-year starters, Demontre Hurst and Jamell Fleming.

2010 Oklahoma Special Teams:

Tress Way is back to handle punts after ranking third nationally with a 45.7-yard average as a freshman. Place kicking, however, remains unsettled. Walkon Patrick O’Hara will begin the year as the starter, after winning the job from Jimmy Stevens midway through last season. Broyles, who ranked third in the country with a 15.9-yard average on punt returns, will be the team’s primary kickoff and punt returner.

2010 Oklahoma Predictions:

With national championship expectations, OU suffered through its most disappointing season in the Stoops era last season. But despite the injuries to many of its stars, the Sooners didn’t quit and won their nnal two games to generate momentum for this season. The schedule is tough again with Florida State, Cincinnati and Texas on the slate. But if the offensive line improves, double-digit wins and big prizes are not out of the question.

San Diego Chargers 2009 NFL Record: 13-3 Home: 6-2 Away: 7-1

San Diego Chargers 2010 Preview

The San Diego Chargers moves on without LaDainian Tomlinson, whose nine-year run as the face of the franchise ended in the offseason due to age and salary cap concerns. The Chargers will try to win their fifth straight AFC West title behind a supercharged offense led by quarterback Philip Rivers, tight end Antonio Gates and wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd. They’re also looking to reestablish a defensive identity behind outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, who wasn’t the same old “Lights Out” last year as he returned from knee surgery. The Super Bowl reinains an elusive goal for the Chargers, who have lost three of their last four playoff games, including a mystifying pratfall against the Jets. The window of opportunity hasn’t closed on the Bolts, but it’s certainly getting smaller for Southern California’s only NFL team. Some people, including some opposing coaches, continue to insist that San Diego is the NFL’s most talented team. That might be the case, but it hasn’t translated into recent success in January.

2010 San Diego Chargers Quarterbacks

Rivers has solidly established the Chargers as a passing tealn and himself as one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. Although the addition of rookie running back Ryan Mathews from Fresno State will give the Chargers some balance, they’re not about to veer away from their high-octane passing game. In fact, Rivers’ status as one of the game’s best quarterbacks means Mathews won’t carry quite the burden Tomlinson did when he was a rookie in 2001 and the Chargers were awful. Rivers will be looking for his third straight 4,000-yard season, something only Hall of Farner Dan Fouts has accomplished in San Diego. Rivers has settled in nicely as the team’s leader and seems to do less yapping at opponents. Billy Volek remains the solid backup, although he doesn’t see much action. The Chargers traded third-stringer Charlie Whitehurst to Seattle and drafted Tennessee’s Jonathan Crompton to be his successor. In a perfect world, Crompton will never take a snap for the Chargers.

2010 San Diego Chargers Running Backs

Tomlinson is out and Mathews, who led the Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing at 150.7 yards per game in 2009, is in. The Chargers liked Mathews so much that they spent big-time to move up 16 spots in the draft to take hin1 12th overall. The Chargers view Mathews as a fresh set of legs with a between-the-tackles style to replace Tomlinson, who had clearly lost a step and, coincidentally, was Mathews’ idol growing up. Mathews has been wearing No. 21 since he was a sophomore in high school. He won’t be getting Tomlinson’s old number, but he will get the chance to prove that the Chargers’ belief that he is a complete back is accurate. Speedy little Darren Sproles returns for at least one more season. The Chargers still intend to use him as a third down back, a receiver out of the backfield and a return specialist – but not the every-down back Sproles thinks he can be. Fullbacks Jacob Hester and Mike Tolbert get a touch or two most games, but they are blockers first and foremost.

2010 San Diego Chargers Receivers

The receiving corps is clearly the team’s strongest unit. There are times when the Chargers can seen1ingly score at will, and Gates, Jackson and Floyd are almost always involved. Gates, now a six-time Pro Bowl tight end following a season in which he had a career-best 1,157 yards on 79 catches, still gives defensive coordinators headaches trying to figure out how to cover him. The 6’5″ Jackson can jump up and get anything that Rivers throws in his general vicinity. Jackson played in the Pro Bowl for the first time and will be looking for his third straight 1,000-yard season. However, he’s also expected to be suspended for a game or two by the NFL after a second DUI conviction. Gates and Jackson became the first Chargers receiving duo to top 1,000 yards apiece since Lionel James and Wes Chandler in 1985, and their 2,324 combined yards were the most by two Chargers since Kellen Winslow and John Jefferson in 1980. Floyd isn’t at Jackson’s level, but he’s also 6′ 5″ and can make big plays. Sproles actually was the team’s third-leading receiver, tied with Floyd, and can bust a long one, too. Veteran wideouts Legedu Naanee and Craig Davis provide solid depth.

2010 San Diego Chargers Offensive Line

Above all, this group is looking for good health. Left tackle Marcus McNeill and left guard Kris Dielman were the only offensive linemen who made every start last year. McNeill rolled an ankle in the season opener and had to stay in the game because there were no backups left. Center Nick Hardwick sprained an ankle in the opener and missed the next 13 games. Right tackle Jeromey Clary missed the final six games with an ankle injury. The injuries did provide valuable playing time to players such as Scott Mruczkowski and Brandyn Dombrowski. Mruczkowski filled in admirably for Hardwick until he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in mid-December, and Dombrowski started two games at right guard in place of rookie Louis Vasquez early in the season, then started the final six at right tackle after Clary got hurt. Rivers’ numbers didn’t seem to suffer, but the injuries contributed to problems in the running game. This is a talented line, but it would be a lot more evident if the players weren’t ailing.

2010 San Diego Chargers Defense

The Chargers hope that rookie Cam Thon1as will eventually become the replacement for departed nosetackle Jamal Williams – and the quicker the better. Williams was the run-stuffing anchor of San Diego’s defense for the better part of a decade, but he suffered a season-ending arm injury in the opener last year that the Chargers never really recovered from, and now he has moved on to division rival Denver. The Chargers drafted Thomas in the fifth round and will throw him into the mix along with Ogemdi Nwagbuo and Ian Scott. As is the case on offense, the Chargers would love to find some consistency up front. A revolving door across the line worked for a portion of the season, but injuries limited this group’s effe.ctiveness. Even though they each had a solid season, ends Luis Castillo and Jacques Cesaire will be more effective if the Chargers can get a strong presence in the middle. The Chargers welcome back Ryon Bingham, who can play either end or tackle and missed all of last season with an arm injury.

This is the group that defines the Chargers’ defensive identity, and last year it hardly ovelwhelmed. Merriman might have moved on by now if not for the uncapped year, and this is perhaps his final season in San Diego. He’s looking to regain the form that led to 39.5 sacks in his first three seasons. He had four last year as he returned from knee surgery that cost him the majority of the 2008 season. On the other side, Shaun Phillips (seven sacks) is now best known as the guy who head-butted a Jets player in the playoffs. Larry English remains in waiting, perhaps as Merriman’s eventual replacement. Brandon Siler and Stephen Cooper do a solid job inside, where rookie Donald Butler is expected to add some depth, especially considering the Chargers gave up two draft picks to move up in the third round and grab him.

This is always an interesting group, one that’s either reviled or revered (often the former). Antonio Cromartie went from having 10 interceptions in 2007 to freezing up when New York’s Shonn Greene hit the hole en route to a 53-yard touchdown run in the playoffs. Cromartie was shipped to the Jets a few weeks later, having become a liability both on the field and in the locker room. Antoine Cason, the team’s 2008 first-round pick, has a chance to win Cromartie’s job, although the team brought in cornerbacks Donald Strickland and Nathan Vasher to compete for the spot opposite the ever-solid Quentin Jammer. The Chargers drafted safety Darrell Stuckey of Kansas, perhaps to light a fire under Eric Weddle and Kevin Ellison.

San Diego Chargers 2010 Season Prediction

An 11-game winning streak to end last season didn’t mean anything once the Chargers were beaten by the Jets. The same will hold true this year, when winning the mediocre AFC West is almost a given. Avoiding another face-plant in the playoffs is what really matters to th is team. The Chargers have gotten better about not talking openly about reaching the Super Bowl, but even that focus hasn’t paid off. The fans who get fired up reading predictions of Super Bowl glory get really grumpy when their team gets sent home in the early rounds of the playoffs.

We predict that the San Diego Chargers will finish 1st in the AFC West, with a record of 12-4.

Miami Dolphins 2009 NFL Record: 7-9 Home: 4-4 Away: 3-5

Miami Dolphins 2010 Preview

So, what will the Trifecta accomplish in Year 3? The Trifecta, of course, is the trio of executive vice president Bill Parcells, general manager Jeff Ireland and coach Tony Sparano, which arrived from Dallas in 2008 and quickly gave credibility to what had recently been a dysfunctional franchise. But after a surprising playoff season in 2008, the Dolphins slipped in 2009 and now must deal with two powerhouses in their own division, the perennially competitive Patriots and the brash and talented Jets. What do they do well? They run the ball. They stop the run. But if the Dolphins plan on passing either of their rivals, they’ll need to get more production out of their passing game – and mostly, they’ll need to stop opposing passers.

2010 Miami Dolphins Quarterbacks

When Chad Pennington tore up his shoulder again in Week 3 last year, Henne, a second-round pick in 2008, took over and went 7-6 the rest of the way, even while getting little support from his defense and playing with pedestrian complementary players. Henne has the size, arm and confidence to be a quality NFL quarterback but still must develop other necessary traits such as touch and pocket awareness. Not wanting to move his family, Pennington re-signed with the Dolphins and chose to accept the No. 3 position and more of a mentor role. His presence should be valuable to Henne, with whom he has a good relationship. Henne’s backup will be Tyler Thigpen or Pat White. Thigpen has proven he can play in the NFL. White, a second-round pick in 2009, has not. He looked overmatched as a rookie, even in specially designed WildPat packages.

2010 Miami Dolphins Running Backs

Can Ronnie Brown stay healthy? That’s the lingering question about the Dolphins’ physical, versatile halfback, who missed the final seven games of 2009 with a Lisfranc fracture of his right foot, two years after missing the final nine games with a knee injury. Brown’s presence remains critical. He is the only halfback on the roster who is fully comfortable as the triggerman in the Wildcat, and he takes the burden off his close friend Ricky Williams. Williams ripped off four 100-yard rushing performances in the first five games with Brown injured but slowed down the stretch. Williams’ workload of 241 carries was more than he’d had the previous three years combined and his most since 2003. Williams could get even more rest if, as expected, 5’8″ Patrick Cobbs returns from a serious knee injury. Quick and tough, Cobbs is a Sparano favorite because he can catch, run from scrimmage and return kicks. Fullback Lousaka Polite is automatic as a short-yardage rusher and has greatly improved his blocking.

2010 Miami Dolphins Receivers

Six. That was the number of touchdowns scored by the Dolphins’ four primary receivers last season. And that meager production is why the Dolphins strayed from their philosophy of avoiding so-called diva receivers and traded two draft picks for Marshall, who has averaged 7.7 touchdowns and 109 catches over the past three seasons. He’s not a burner, but he is a premium possession receiver and will make Henne look much better, provided he stays with the program. He has had a history of troubling domestic incidents and was insubordinate at ‘times during his Denver tenure. Now newly married and well paid, Marshall promised upon arrival to be more of a professional, on and off the field, at all times.Marshall’s arrival should allow the other wideouts to slide into more comfortable roles. Brian Hartline showed promise as a rookie, running good routes and occasionally springing loose for a big play. Greg Camarillo is another year removed from knee surgery and coming off a perfect season (no drops). And Davone Bess is crafty in the slot. What’s missing? A speed threat and a dynamic tight end. The Dolphins cut their losses with Ted Ginn Jr. after one too many drops and sprints toward the sideline. At tight end, they’ll hope Anthony Fasano bounces back from a disappointing year to help Marshall and Bess work the middle.

2010 Miami Dolphins Offensive Line

Jake Long has arrived. The first overall pick in 2008, Long struggled against Atlanta’s John Abraham in the season opener, and then infrequently thereafter. Long is a run-blocking force and has demonstrated that he can adjust enough to handle speed rushers. He’s the least of the Dolphins’ worries for the next decade. Two other positions are set. Jake Grove performed reasonably well at center, and he returns along with right tackle Vernon Carey, whose play was undermined by knee and back problems. It does appear there will be a changing of the guards. Justin Smiley got hurt and didn’t finish either of his Dolphins seasons, so Nate Garner will get a shot at left guard. Garner has shown remarkable versatility, playing tackle, guard and center in a single game. Another potential left guard starter is Donald Thomas, who lost the right guard spot to Garner late last season. The right guard should be Richie Incognito, deemed one of the league’s dirtiest players.

2010 Miami Dolphins Defense

As the defense crumbled around hin1, the unheralded Randy Starks put together the most consistent season of any Dolphin in 2009, mostly while playing end. Now Starks will be asked to move inside and man the nosetackle position on many downs, at least until veteran Jason Ferguson returns from suspension (for performance- enhancing drugs) after eight weeks, or until massive Paul Soliai can control his weight enough to be counted upon. With Starks shifting inside, three young players will have a chance to make a name on the outside. Phillip Merling and Kendall Langford were high draft choices in 2008, and while both have shown promise, neither has made enough impact plays. Merling, in particular, needs to improve his practice habits or risk getting pushed out by rookie first-rounder Jared Odrick.

Sometimes, it’s tough to notice inside linebacker Channing Crowder when he’s on the field because he makes few gameturning plays. But it’s easy to notice when he’s missing because the Dolphins have fared worse, particularly in coverage, without him. So Crowder returns, and he’ll have more help inside. The Dolphins replaced Akin Ayodele with former Cardinals standout Karios Dansby, spending lavishly to do so. Dansby has shown a knack for the big play. Cameron Wake can really run, too and in limited action he showed the pass-rushing prowess that made him a two-time Canadian Football League Defensive Player of the Year. The question is whether he can stop the run. If so, he’ll get plenty of snaps outside. The other spot is wide open. Charlie Anderson and Quentin Moses haven’t done much to distinguish then1selves, so rookie Koa Misi will get a long look.

The Dolphins didn’t intend to start two rookie cornerbacks in 2009. Then veteran Will Allen’s knee injury forced Vontae Davis into the lineup with Sean Smith. Smith was a little steadier, and Davis a little more spectacular, which was sonmewhat of a surprise considering the ball skills that Smith showed in the preseason. Both got burned some, which was to be expected. Davis is smaller but but loves to hit – and talk. Smith, at 6’3″, uses his feet well but needs to get more physical. If either regresses, the Dolphins can turn back to Allen. The oft-injured Yeremiah Bell saw his perseverance result in his first Pro Bowl appearance, even if he didn’t have his best overall season. He brings some playmalcing ability to the strong safety spot. Gibril Wilson flopped at free safety, leaving the athletic Chris Clemons, the intelligent Tyrone Culver and rookie Reshad Jones to compete for the spot.

Miami Dolphins 2010 Season Prediction

Parcells, Ireland and Sparano have cleaned house in less than three years, keeping only 12 players they inherited (so far), and only five or six of whom have a chance to start. So this is their team now. They have their quarterback, and they have their style of player (big, physical) at virtually every position. But it won’t be a championship team until Henne takes a step toward the elite, which could be a year or two away, if it happens at all.

We predict that the Miami Dolphins will finish 3rd in the AFC East, with a record of 8-8.

2009 Record: 7-6 SEC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 5 Offense, 7 Defense, Punter

Coach: Joker Phillips (At Kentucky and overall: 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Randy Sanders Defensive Coordinators: Steve Brown

2010 Kentucky Players to Watch: WR/PR Randall Cobb, RB Derrick Locke, OG Stuart Hines, DE DeQuln Evans, LB Danny Trevathan, FS Winston Guy

2010 Kentucky Strengths:
Cobb and Locke give Kentucky two of the most dangerous playmakers In the SEC to build Its offense around. Regardless of who wins the quarterback job, the passing game should be improved from last year. The secondary Is deep and battle-tested.

2010 Kentucky Weaknesses:
The Wildcats have major question marks defensively, particularly In the front seven. Unless more playmakers emerge on the defensive line, Kentucky will have major problems stopping the run. While the offense has playmakers, there are four new starters on the line.

2010 Kentucky Offense:

The quarterback competition among senior Mike Hartline, sophomore Morgan Newton and redshirt freshman Ryan Mossakowski will spill into the fall. Hartline doesn’t have overwhelming physical skills, but has the best understanding of the offense and makes the fewest mistakes. Newton is the best dual-threat. He was thrown to the wolves as a true freshman last year after Hartline went down with a knee injury and led the Wildcats to road wins at Auburn and Georgia. While he has a strong arm, he must prove to be a more consistent and accurate passer in order for new coach Joker Phillips to trust him enough to open up the offense. Mossakowski, who redshirted in 2009 while recovering from shoulder surgery, offers potential as a big drop-back passer. Junior Randall Cobb will be the NO.1 receiving option. Despite occasionally playing quarterback in the Wildcat package, Cobb still led the team with 39 receptions for 447 yards and four touchdowns. Senior running back Derrick Locke runs bigger than his 5-9, 191-pound frame suggests and is one of the country’s top all-purpose threats. Left guard Stuart Hines, who was a third-team All-SEC pick last season, leads a line that lost four starters and a combined 123 career starts.

2010 Kentucky Defense:

The Wildcats have struggled in the past few years at stopping the run, and that was with NFL draft picks MYron Pryor, Jeremy Jarmon and Corey Peters up front. There’s no one of that caliber on this line, although senior end DeQuin Evans did record a team-high six sacks in his nrst year in the program. UK needs senior tackle Ricky Lumpkin to go out with a bang if the line hopes to overachieve. Slowed by injuries early in his career, Lumpkin managed to stay healthy last year. Junior linebacker Danny Trevathan is the team’s top returning tackler and has the speed to be an effective blitzer, something the Wildcats may have to do more of to compensate for their lack of size and experience. To wit: Qua Huzzie has the inside track at middle linebacker despite being only 5-10, 210 pounds. Cornerback Paul Warford is a battle-tested nfthyear senior. Junior safety Winston Guy, who has All-SEC physical ability, needs consistency to reach his potential.

2010 Kentucky Special Teams:

Punter Ryan Tydlacka averaged 40 yards per kick and was especially effective on hang time and placement. Incoming freshman Joe Mansour, who was rated one of the country’s best high school placekickers, will try to replace departed Lones Seiber. Cobb and Locke are dangerous return men. Cobb had a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown last year, while Locke took a kickoff back 100 yards for a score.

2010 Kentucky Predictions:

Kentucky should be much more effective on offense, but the season hinges on how a small and inexperienced defense responds. The schedule is light enough for UK to pick up six wins, but with all the question marks, a fifth straight bowl game is far from a certainty.

2009 Record: 7-6 Big 12 Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 9 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Paul Rhoads (Iowa State and overall: 7-6, 1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Tom Herman Defensive Coordinators: Wally Bumham

2010 Iowa State Players to Watch: QB Austen Arnaud, RB Alexander Robinson, WR Sedrick Johnson, WR Darius Darks, DE Rashawn Parker, LB Jake Knott, CB Leonard Johnson, SS David Sims

2010 Iowa State Strengths:
The offense retums almost everyone, including three-year starters at Quarterback (Amaud) and tailback (Robinson); their production and health will hold the key to the season. The multi-talented Robinson will run behind aline that is big and strong. And there’s no shortage of play-making receivers.

2010 Iowa State Weaknesses:
Much of the front seven on defense is unproven. It’s a lot to ask of linebackers Knott and AJ. Klein to step right in and play like they know what they are doing. And who knows how Parker will play on the end coming off major knee surgery?

2010 Iowa State Offense:

Most of Iowa State’s offense returns, which should mean an increase in the 20.5 points per game it averaged last season. Quarterback Austen Arnaud has had another year to understand the principles of the spread attack, and by all accounts is a much different player than a year ago. Backup Jerome Tiller is talented, but the starting job probably is another year away. Tailback Alexander Robinson will again be the focal point of the offense, as he should be. With another stellar season, Robinson could move as high as third on lSD’s career rushing list. The senior will be running behind one of the best lines in the Big 12. All-conference picks Kelechi Osemele and Ben Lamaak are part of the group that ranked 22nd nationally in sacks allowed (16) and paved the way for a 180-yard rushing average. Arnaud has plenty of options in the passing game with a healthy Darius Darks, Sedrick Johnson and Darius Reynolds, talented youngsters who all missed good chunks of last season due to injury.

2010 Iowa State Defense:

Position battles will rage into camp as Iowa State tries to fmd the right replacements for five starters. Linebacker was hit hardest, with all three starters moving on. Sophomores A.J. Klein and Jake Knott saw some action last season and are being counted on to step in right away. They may be the only true linebackers on the field. Defensive coordinator Wally Burnham is expected to have cornerback Ter’ran Benton out there as a fifth defensive back. Cornerback Leonard Johnson has a chance to be a big-time player, and safeties David Sims and Mike O’Connell have a lot of experience. Coaches want to see the defensive line exert more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. End Rashawn Parker is back off a knee injury that wrecked his 2009 season. Junior Patrick Nealwho filled in for Parker last year – could again start, and sophomore Jake McDonough is being talked about as a force in the middle.

2010 Iowa State Special Teams:

Freshman Kirby Van Der Kamp takes over for four-year starting punter Mike Brandtner. Van Der Kamp has to understand how critical his role is in the battle for field position. Brandtner had a huge impact in that area. Kicker Grant Mahoney needs better accuracy on field goals to go along with his strong leg. Johnson, Sims, Reynolds and Josh Lenz all are capable of making big plays on kickoff and punt returns. Lenz showed flashes last season as a true freshman of being a game-breaking threat. Johnson set a single-game NCAA record for kickoff return yards in 2008.

2010 Iowa State Predictions:

This will be an incredibly challenging schedule for the Cyclones, who have three non-conference opponents that played in bowls last season before Big 12 play really gets going. With another year to absorb the system and its intricacies, this could be a better team than last year but may not have the record to reflect it.

Minnesota Vikings 2009 NFL Record: 12-4 Home: 8-0 Away: 4-4

Minnesota Vikings 2010 Preview

After coming tantalizingly dose to earning a trip to the Super Bowl last season, the Vilcings approached this season with the same question hanging over their heads as the previous summer: Will Brett Favre be their quarterback? In typical Favre fashion, he retreated to his Mississippi home after the season without making any public declaration about his intentions, saying only that he would take his time. Even so, most Vikings fans and observers expect that he will return for his 20th season, thus ensuring the Vikings again will be considered a Super Bowl contender. Favre had one of the best seasons of his career in 2009, and there’s no reason to think he can’t continue to play at a high level while surrounded by lots of talent on offense. With Favre, the Vikings have the pieces in place in all three phases to make a run at a championship. The schedule is more difficult this season, but they have a group of core veterans who realize their window of opportunity is open right now.

2010 Minnesota Vikings Quarterbacks

Favre’s decision to postpone retirement for a second time last season was greeted with some skepticism. So much for that. Favre played magnificently despite turning 40 in October. He completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 4,202 yards and 33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. Favre’s surgically repaired right arm held up, and his teammates embraced him. Favre’s experience last season is why many believe he will return in 2010. It will be difficult to duplicate his 2009 production, but Favre certainly wants to redeem himself after throwing an interception on a potential game-winning drive against the Saints in the NFC Championship Game. In the unlikely event that Favre doesn’t return, the Vikings will turn the offense over to either Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels. Jackson held the No.2 job all last season and presumably will handle that role again. The Vikings traded for Rosenfels last offseason before Favre came out of retirement, and the veteran was inactive every game.

2010 Minnesota Vikings Running Backs

Peterson has rushed for more yards than any NFL running back over the past three seasons. He has also fumbled more times, and that has become a n1ajor problem. Peterson vowed to make substantive changes in how he protects the ball after fun1bling twice and causing a botched exchange with Favre in the NFC title gamme. Peterson’s production dropped as the Vikings relied more on the passing game last season. He failed to rush for 100 yards in any of the final seven regular-season games. But make no mistake: Peterson remains the focal point for opposing defensive coordinators. Even so, the Vikings need Peterson to play a bigger role on third down now that Chester Taylor is in Chicago. Peterson improved as a receiver out of the backfield last season, and he needs to continue to make strides and also show that he’s reliable in pass protection. The Vikings drafted Heisman Trophy runner-up Toby Gerhart, a punishing runner at Stanford who should help take some of the burden off Peterson. The Vikings also like third-year back Albert Young, who will compete with Gerhart for the No. 2 job.

2010 Minnesota Vikings Receivers

The receiving corps was a major question heading into last season, but now it’s a position of strength. Sidney Rice thrived wi th Favre as his quarterback and earned his first Pro Bowl trip. Rice is a terrific talent who uses his size (6’4″) and catch radius to his advantage in one-on-one n1atchups. Percy Harvin, who won Offensive Roolcie of the Year honors in 2009, is a dynamic slot receiver who quickly earned Favre’s trust, particularly on third down Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe creates matchup problems for defenses because of his combination of size and speed, and he is a force in the red zone (11 touchdowns last season). Bernard Berrian struggled with a hamstring injury last year, but he can stretch the field with his speed when healthy.

2010 Minnesota Vikings Offensive Line

This group needs to show more consistency. With two new starters in 2009, the line struggled at times and contributed to problems in the running game. Left guard Steve Hutchinson is still an elite player, but left tackle Bryant McKinnie must give a more consistent effort. Center John Sullivan had a bull’seye on him last season as the replacement for long-time Viking Matt Birk. Sullivan did a decent job, particularly against much larger nosetackles, but the Vikings are counting on him to make big strides this season. Sullivan compensates for his lack of size by using his quickness and savvy. Right tackle Phil Loadholt returns after a promising rookie season in which he proved to be better in pass protection than originally thought. He is a tough, hard-nosed competitor who could be a staple on the line for years. Anthony Herrera returns at right guard, but a lack of depth up front is a concern. The Vikings lost their top backup, Artis Hicks, to Washington in free agency and need to find someone who can play multiple positions.

2010 Minnesota Vikings Defense

The Vikings should have one of the premier fronts in the NFL again this season. Jared Allen is a pass-rushing terror off the edge. Allen’s 72 sacks since 2004 lead all NFL players in that span. It also helps that he has tackle Kevin Williams playing beside him. Williams is a perennial All-Pro player who can rush the quarterback and is tough against the run. He makes it difficult for teams to double-team Allen on the outside. Nosetackle Pat Williams is returning for his 14th season after saying he would consider retirement. Pat Williams plays only in running situations and has battled injuries the past few seasons, but he’s still a tough run-stopper when healthy. Left end Ray Edwards is coming off the best season of his career (8.5 sacks). Edwards sees more than his share of one-on-one matchups because ofAllen and the Williams Wall, and he’s capable of winning those battles. The Vikings already had good depth along the line before adding USC defensive end Everson Griffen in the draft.

The key to this unit is the health of middle linebacker and team captain E.J. Henderson, who is trying to return from a fractured femur suffered last December. It was a horrific injury that left Henderson’s playing future in doubt, but he says he hopes to be ready to start training camp. That would be a huge lift to a unit that missed his presence. Chad Greenway is on track to become a Pro Bowl player, and veteran Ben Leber is an unsung hero who played in the middle in nickel situations. Jasper Brinkley, a rookie fifth-round pick last year, started in place of Henderson after the injury and showed some promise. Brinkley is a big hitter who is more comfortable defending the run than the pass.

Favre’s decision notwithstanding, the secondary was the biggest question for the Vikings this offseason. Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield is coming off a serious foot injury and is entering his 12th season. Cedric Griffin suffered a torn ACL covering a kickoff in the NFC title game and likely won’t be ready by the start of the season. The team signed veteran Lito Sheppard on the eve of the draft as insurance. Sheppard, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, was released by the Jets after one season and now should get a chance to start as Griffin recovers. The Vikings also drafted Virginia cornerback Chris Cook with the No. 34 overall pick. The Vikings must get better play from their safeties this season. Tyrell Johnson and Madieu Williams missed too many tackles and combined for only one interception last season. Second-year safety Jamarca Sanford will push both for a starting job in camp.

Minnesota Vikings 2010 Season Prediction

The Vikings will enter the season as a legitimate Super Bowl contender if, as expected, Favre returns for a second season. This is a veteran teaIll full of stars that is built to win now. The schedule is more difficult than in 2009, but the talent is in place to make another deep postseason run.

We predict that the Minnesota Vikings will finish 2nd in the NFC North, with a record of 11-5 and a wildcard berth in the playoffs.

2009 Record: 8-5 SEC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 15: 7 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Gene Chlzik (Auburn: 8-5, 1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Gus Malzahn Defensive Coordinators: Ted Roof

2010 Auburn Players to Watch: QB Cameron Newton, RB Marlo Fannin, WR Darvln Adams, OT Lee Ziemba, C Ryan Pugh, DT Nick Fairley, LB Josh Bynes, LB Craig Stevens

2010 Auburn Strengths:
Four starting linemen retun to a fast paced offense that was one of the nation’s best ayear ago and still features big play ability. Aubum has depth at defensive tackle. Bynes and Stevens are as good a linebacker duo as there is in the conference.

2010 Auburn Weaknesses:
Experience at quarterback is a concern, and no tailback on the depth chart has ever been the go-to guy. Auburn lacks an elite pass rusher, and there is no real ball-hawk in the secondary. Depth could be an issue at linebacker, tight end and on the offensive line. Special teams have issues in coverage and consistency on punts.

2010 Auburn Offense:

Junior college transfer Cameron Newton is listed as the team’s starting quarterback after beating out senior Neil Caudle and sophomore Barrett Trotter for the NO.1 job during the spring. At 6-6, 247 pounds, Newton’s arm strength and running ability are his key assets, but he’s also impressed teammates with his work ethic and leadership skills in his short time on the Plains. Mario Fannin steps into Ben Tate’s old role as the No.1 tailback. Fannin, who has had fumbling issues in the past, didn’t put the ball on the turf one time this spring. Onterio McCalebb, Dontae Aycock, Eric Smith and freshman Michael Dyer are also expected to see time in the backfield. Darvin Adams set an Auburn single-season record with 60 receptions last season and is a big play waiting to happen. He and Terrell Zachery combine to give the Tigers one of the best set of wideouts in the conference. Quindarius Carr, Emory Blake, Jay Wisner and Travante Stallworth are also in the mix at receiver. Philip Lutzenkirchen will be the team’s primary tight end. The line should be a force, provided everyone stays healthy. Center Ryan Pugh is an All-SEC candidate, as is left tackle Lee Ziemba.

2010 Auburn Defense:

Veterans Antoine Carter, Nick Fairley, Mike Blanc and either Michael Goggans or Nosa Eguae are a good bet to start on the line, but Zach Clayton, Dee Ford, Jamar Travis and Derrick Lykes should all see action. True freshman Jeffrey Whitaker and junior college transfer Joel Bonomolo could also see playing time. The Tigers appear to be in much better shape at linebacker than they were a year ago because of the return of veteran starters Josh Bynes, Craig Stevens and Eltoro Freeman. Bynes is adept at playing the run and will start in the middle. Stevens is an All-SEC candidate and will start on the weakside. Daren Bates moved from safety to linebacker during the spring and will likely start on the strongside. Freeman, Jonathan Evans and January enrollee Jessel Curry are all candidates for playing time. Neiko Thorpe and Demond Washington are the starting corners. They both had great springs and neither player is afraid of contact. Former starters Mike McNeil and Aairon Savage are returning from injuries and, if healthy, could form one of the hardest-hitting safety combos in the SEC. Drew Cole, T’Sharvan Bell and D’Antoine Hood will supply quality depth.

2010 Auburn Special Teams:

Wes Byrum returns as the placekicker after nailing 15 of 16 field-goal attempts. Ryan Shoemaker will handle the punting duties. Demond Washington and Mario Fannin are set to assume the kick return duties. Quindarius Carr is a candidate to handle punt return chores.

2010 Auburn Predictions:

The Tigers are a veteran team that should receive a jolt of energy from the nation’s NO.4 recruiting class. Gene Chizik’s club has talent and is well coached, but quarterback play likely will determine whether this team can challenge Alabama in the SEC West.

St. Louis Rams 2009 NFL Record: 1-15 Home: 1-7 Away: 0-8

St. Louis Rams 2010 Preview

Nobody figured that the Rams would suddenly reverse course in 2009 after bringing in Steve Spagnuolo as their new coach. But few probably thought that things would get worse. But that’s what happened. On the heels of 3-13 and 2-14 finishes the previous two years, the Rams slipped to an NFL-worst 1-15 last season. That adds up to 6-42 over the last three seasons, each of which ended with the Rams in the NFC West cellar. After picking second overall in the last two drafts, the Rams had the No.1 selection this year and spent it on Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, hoping that he’ll become a franchise quarterback. And soon. The team patched some holes during free agency and believes that it had a solid draft. Spagnuolo is eager put 2009 is his rear-view mirror.

2010 St. Louis Rams Quarterbacks

The early April release ofMarc Bulger, the starter for the previous seven-plus seasons, heralded a new era for the Rams – and made it obvious that Bradford would be their choice at the top of the draft. Bradford arrived with some question marks, including two injuries to his throwing shoulder, the second requiring surgery, and only two full seasons of college experience at Oklahoma. Still, the Rams were highly in1pressed with Bradford at his pro day performance and a private workout, so they’ll sink or swim with the rookie. Veteran A.J. Feeley was a free agent signee and presumably will back up Bradford. He hasn’t thrown a pass in a regularseason game since 2007. The Rams also have Keith Null, a sixth-round draft pick out of West Texas A&M last year who started the last four games following injuries to Bulger and the departed Kyle Boller.

2010 St. Louis Rams Running Backs

Despite a painful back injury, Steven Jackson put together a Pro Bowl year, rushing for 1,416 yards – second in the NFL and the fifth year in a row he’d topped 1,000and adding 322 yards on 51 receptions. Jackson missed just one game because of the herniated disk that flared up during the second half of the season. His numbers would have been even more impressive had the Rams presented a more potent passing attack. A six-year veteran, Jackson also made an overt effort to become a positive voice in the locker room, and Spagnuolo praised Jackson’s leadership throughout a difficult season. Jackson had 324 carries, the secondhighest total of his career, and the Ran1s are hoping Kenneth Darby and second-year pro Chris Ogbonnaya can provide effective relief Mike Karney returns at fullback, where he was solid as a lead blocker for Jackson last year.

2010 St. Louis Rams Receivers

Where the Rams once maintained a stable of standout wide receivers, they slogged through ’09 with mostly youngsters and unproven veterans. That group will provide the nucleus of the wideout corps this season, too. Still, the return of Laurent Robinson, who was off to an impressive start last season before going down with a fractured leg and ankle in Week 3, should be a big boost. Also, the addition of fourth-round draft pick Mardy Gilyard gives the tealTI a prospect with big-play potential. Donnie Avery, Keenan Burton, Brandon Gibson and Danny Amendola got valuable experience last year. Also, Brooks Foster, a fifthround draft choice last year who missed the entire season after undergoing ankle surgery, is healthy again. The Rams parted ways with veteran tight end Randy McMichael and will head into the season without a go-to man there. The options include newly acquired Darcy Johnson, Daniel Fells and Billy Bajema, both of whom showed flashes at times last season, along with two rookies, Michael Hoomanawanui and Fendi Onobun.

2010 St. Louis Rams Offensive Line

The Ran1s got limited return on their investment in Baylor tackle Jason Smith with the No.2 overall choice in the 2009 draft. Because of a knee injury and later a concussion, Smith played just eight games, starting five at right tackle. But the Rams remain high on Smith, and he figures to wind up on the all-important left side after the trade of veteran Alex Barron to Dallas. Rookie Rodger Saffold has the inside track at right tackle. Jacob Bell will be back at left guard, and Jason Brown, a 2009 free agent pickup, is set at center. John Greco started the last three games at right guard after Richie Incognito was released and is expected to go into training camp as the favorite to return there. Free agent pickup Hank Fraley also could figure into the mix. Versatile Adam Goldberg and Mark Setterstrom provide solid depth. Although it’s relatively young, this group could emerge as the Rams’ best line in years.

2010 St. Louis Rams Defense

The Rams have been vulnerable against the run the past few years, and after ranking 27th in the league last season they’ve done little to remedy that. The addition of tackle Fred Robbins via free agency could help, and the Rams did draft three ends. But most of this year’s line was part oflast year’s debacle. A quickly improving Clifton Ryan figures to team with Robbins inside; second-year pro Darell Scott also will be in the rotation. Chris Long, who has yet to dOlninate in two seasons after being selected No.2 overall, will man one of the end spots. The other likely goes to Jalnes Hall, unless Leonard Little chooses not to retire.

James Laurinaitis became just the second rookie in franchise history to lead the Rams in tacldes, piling up 120 at his middle linebacker spot. Among rookies, only Houston linebacker Brian Cushing had more (133). Na’il Diggs arrived in the offseason as a free agent and is expected to start at strong-side linebacker, with exCowboy Bobby Carpenter, obtained in the Barron trade, on the weak side. David Vobora, started on the strong side much of last season and will provide depth, as will Larry Grant and Chris Chamberlain.

Cornerback Ron Bartell should rebound from his mediocre showing last year, when he was hampered much of the season by a thigh injury. A healthy Bartell would give the Rams one solid corner, but the other spot is less certain. Bradley Fletcher beat out Jonathan Wade for the starting job after the first four games last season, but in his third start he suffered a serious knee injury that ended his rookie season. Fletcher’s rehab has gone well, so he should be in good stead to regain his job. Quincy Butler and later Justin King filled in at corner in Fletcher’s absence, wi·th so-so results. Rookies Jerome Murphy (third round) and Marquis Johnson (seventh) will each get a long look at corner during the preseason. The team’s top safety, Oshiomogho Atogwe, would gain more notice if he played for a team that was good enough to merit a national broadcast now and then Atogwe plays opposite strong safety James Butler, and Craig Dahl, who is coming off a nice ’09 season, can fill in at either spot.

St. Louis Rams 2010 Season Prediction

Bradford is the new face of the franchise, and much of the Rams’ hopes for a 2010 turnaround rest on his surgically repaired right shoulder. He might not be the starter in Week 1, but barring a major setback, he’ll Inove into that role sooner rather than later. With Spagnuolo heading into his second season as the coach, the roster has been better tuned to the “scheme-fit” players he wants, especially on defense. Still, the Rams have a long, bumpy road to travel. And the unsettled ownership situation that stalked the team for months has not helped promote stability. Spagnuolo, Devaney and front office chief Kevin Demoff vowed to rebuild the franchise, but none predicted an overnight renaissance. They’ve taken the slow-butsure approach, and the Rams are probably at least a couple of years away from truly regaining their footing.

We predict that the St. Louis Rams will finish 4th in the NFC West, with a record of 5-11.
