2010 Record: 3-9 Sun Belt Record: 3-5 (T-6th) 2011 Returning Starters: 14; 5 offense, 7 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Mark Hudspeth, First Season

Offensive Coordinators: Jay Johnson Defensive Coordinators: Greg Stewart

2011 Louisiana Lafayette Players to Watch: QB Chris Masson, TE Ladarius Green, DE Bemard Smith, LB Devon Lewis-Buchanan, CB Dwight “Bill” Bentley, SS Lionel Stokes, CB Melvin White

2011 Louisiana Lafayette Strengths:
Green, who can do more than catch short routes over the middle, is one of the nation’s top tight ends. He had at least one catch of 20 yards or more in all but one of his 10 games. Whoever wins the quarterback Job will be experienced. The secondary is the most experienced unit on defense.

2011 Louisiana Lafayette Weaknesses:
The Cajuns have questions at wide receiver and the offensive line, and they lack depth at running back. The defense, especially up front, has serious depth issues as well and did not stop the run well last season. One or two injuries could be disastrous.

2011 Louisiana Lafayette Offense:

The Ragin’ Cajuns were one of the nation’s top rushing teams from 2005-08, but they went to the spread offense for two seasons and failed to post a winning record in either of those years. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that new coach Mark Hudspeth and coordinator Jay Johnson are keeping options open on what to expect from what has been an inconsistent unit. The Cajuns used three different quarterbacks last year due to injuries, and they still haven’t settled on a regular. Senior Chris Masson started most of the past two seasons, throwing for 1,842 yards and 11 scores with two 300-yard games in 2010, but backup Blaine Gautier actually wound up as the team’s second-leading rusher. True freshman Aaron Spikes led the team in rushing but had more yards receiving (398) than rushing (339) last season. A more prolific aerial target is senior Ladarius Green, the nation’s leader in five receiving categories among tight ends last year and the second-leading receiver in the Sun Belt (79.4 yards per game). Junior Javone Lawson, returning from a midseason injury, and senior Andrew “Rico” Joseph are the top outside targets. The offensive front allowed 39 sacks last year and lost two starters. Guard Kyle Plouhar and tackles Leonardo Bates and Jaron Odom are back.

2011 Louisiana Lafayette Defense:

The Cajuns’ defense will have a different look, with their former 4-3 front morphing into a hybrid that will stretch from a 3-4 to an eight-man front. The hope is to improve a unit that gave up 37 points and almost 400 yards per game in last year’s 3–9 season. The biggest improvement may be up front, where senior tackle Derreck Dean returns for his fourth year and senior end Bernard Smith may finally live up to his reputation after a solid spring. Devon Lewis-Buchanan is the leading returning tackler with 63 last year and heads up a revamped linebacking corps that also includes converted wide receiver Lance Kelley and the oft-injured Richard Brooks. Arkansas transfer Jelani Smith, who sat out last season, is part of a unit that will alternate as many as eight different players. Since the new alignments will pack the box, the Cajuns’ secondary will have to do better than the 2010 unit that allowed 62.7 percent completions by opposing quarterbacks. But improvement could happen with the return of veterans Dwight Bentley and Melvin White at the corners and the athletic Lionel Stokes at safety.

2011 Louisiana Lafayette Special Teams:

Sophomore Brett Baer took over as the Cajuns’ kicker in the fourth game of last season and was 7 of 7 on field goals after that. But he faces a challenge in the fall from incoming freshman Carlos Alvarez. Both also will compete for the primary punting job. Incoming junior college transfer Harry Peoples is expected to take over punt returns. Sophomore Darryl Surgent averaged just more than 20 yards on 31 kickoff returns last year.

2011 Louisiana Lafayette Predictions:

The arrival of the effervescent Hudspeth pumped life into the UL Lafayette program in the offseason, and the Cajuns are ahead of the public relations game entering the 2011 season. But all that goodwill won’t be enough to cover several shortages that could carry over from last year, including an inconsistent offense and a defense that struggled mightily. If the running game doesn’t emerge and several newcomers don’t contribute heavily, the Cajuns will have a tough time winning more than two games in the Sun Belt.

2010 Record: 2-10 Sun Belt Record: 2-6 (9th) 2011 Returning Starters: 19; 7 offense, 10 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Willie Taggart, 2-10 (1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Zach Azzanni Defensive Coordinators: Lance Guidry

2011 Western Kentucky Players to Watch: OB Kawaun Jakes, RB Bobby Rainey, TE Jack Doyle, OT Wes Jeffries, CB Tyree Robinson, CB Anus Wright, DE Ouanterus Smith, DT Jamarcus Allen

2011 Western Kentucky Strengths:
Bobby Rainey ran all over the Sun Belt last season and had little trouble against Kentucky and Nebraska during non-conference outings. Rainey is a legit star for a program that’s in desperate need of a spark. Youth, speed and enthusiasm on defense could provide abig jump this season.

2011 Western Kentucky Weaknesses:
WKU has a new defensive coordinator in Lance Guidry and a young, impressionable defense in tow. The Hilltoppers are still one of the youngest teams in America and have little to no winning experience, as the program has won just two games over the past two seasons.

2011 Western Kentucky Offense:

While there is still spotty talent and a lack of quality depth along the two-deep depth chart, there is no questioning the ability of senior running back Bobby Rainey, one of the best players in the country most folks don’t know. Not only did the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year finish third in the nation in rushing last season, piling up 1,649 yards, but he also led the country in rushing attempts. Nine times, he rushed for more than 100 yards. Junior Kawaun Jakes emerged as the starter at quarterback last fall. He is solid as a passer, but he can also put pressure on defenses with his legs, which is key in coach Willie Taggart’s offense. Junior tight end Jack Doyle is big and possesses good hands, but he missed the last five games of last season and most of spring with concussion symptoms. The Hilltoppers need second-leading receiver Marcus Vasquez, who sat out spring practice with a broken collarbone, to return, especially after their top receiver, Willie McNeal, was lost to a knee injury. Western wants to continue running the ball and controlling the clock like last year, when it led the league and finished fourth in the country in time of possession (33:03). Leading the offensive line is senior left tackle Wes Jeffries, an all-league candidate.

2011 Western Kentucky Defense:

While Rainey has star power, the most talent is on the defensive side of the ball, although the Hilltoppers have their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years in Lance Guidry. He coached Miami (Ohio) to a bowl victory in an interim role after RedHawks coach Michael Haywood took the Pitt job. The strength of the team is up front, where four starters return, highlighted by junior Quanterus Smith, an all-league candidate at end who led the team in sacks and was second in tackles for a loss. Last season’s best defender and top tackler, second-team All-SBC linebacker Thomas Majors, has graduated, leaving a gaping hole to fill. But waiting in the wings is junior Tye Golden, who’s talented but inexperienced. After getting thrown into the fire as freshmen, Arius Wright and Tyree Robinson should be much improved this season. They should develop into one of the best cornerback tandems in the league.

2011 Western Kentucky Special Teams:

Kicker Casey Tinius should still have his job entering the fall despite having a dreadful 2010 season in which he went six of 15 on field-goal tries. Backup Monte Merrick could make a push, but he wasn’t able to do enough last season to take the job away. Hendrix Brakefield made every punt for WKU in 2010 as a true freshman, averaging 40.5 yards.

2011 Western Kentucky Predictions:

Taggart knows how to build a program. He joined Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Stanford in 2006 following an 1–11 season, then helped build the Cardinal into a winner. And the former WKU quarterback was offensive coordinator for the Hilltoppers under Harbaugh’s dad, Jack, when the team won the Division I-AA national title in 2002. The Hilltoppers aren’t quite ready to contend for a league title, but they are headed in that direction. Taggart has signed two straight recruiting classes that have been ranked as the best in the league. He will soon have the talent that rivals or even surpasses the top teams in the Sun Belt. In the meantime, the Hilltoppers will continue to climb the conference ladder. A . 500 record in league play should be the goal in 2011.

2011 Bowling Green Players to Watch: QB Matt Schilz, WR Kamar Jorden, WR Eugene Cooper, C Ben Bojioc, DT Chris Jones, LB Dwayne Woods Jr., LB Paul Swan, CB Cameron Truss

2011 Bowling Green Strengths:
The defensive front seven is the strength of the team, led by Jones and Woods, with solid players at the other spots and some decent backups. The receiving corps also has a strong veteran presence.

2011 Bowling Green Weaknesses:
The offensive line was a mess in 2010 as the Falcons had problems running the ball, while the Quarterbacks were sacked 34 times. There are still plenty of question marks on the line, although for the first time in several years there is some depth at the position. Still there’s alot of work ahead for that unit to be productive.

2011 Bowling Green Offense:

The Falcons are determined to put some more spark and firepower in their attack, based on the hope that sophomore quarterback Matt Schilz will quickly evolve into a big-time thrower. He started 10 games last season and threw for 2,223 yards and eight touchdowns, with seven games of 200-plus yards. Redshirt freshman Trent Hurley gives Bowling Green a very capable backup. The running game loses ultra-productive Willie Geter. Sophomore Jordan Hopgood has the edge to take the lead role after scoring six touchdowns in 2010. Erique Geiger and John Pettigrew have some experience and could share the carries, while redshirt freshman Jamel Martin shows promise. The targets for Schilz are numerous, led by first-team All-MAC pick Kamar Jorden, who had 1,109 yards and four touchdown grabs last season. If seniors Eugene Cooper and Adrian Hodges improve on their modest numbers and sophomore Shaun Joplin fulfills the promise he showed in the spring, this group could be a strength. Justus Jones and Steven Dunlap are all pushing for roles in what should be a prolific air attack. After a season of chaos brought on by injuries, things look very stable up front, where four starters return to familiar positions. Senior center Ben Bojicic is a two-time Rimington Award nominee and the anchor this offense needs in the middle. Chip Robinson, Jordon Roussos and Dominic Flewellyn also return as starters, while Scott Lewis, Kyle Bryant, Darion Delaney and Isaiah Byler are solidly in the rotation.

2011 Bowling Green Defense:

Bowling Green plans to maximize its strengths to shore up the uncertain areas, and one of those strong areas is at tackle, where four top performers are back. By moving senior Kevin Moore to end, the Falcons address one need. Veteran Chris Jones is at one tackle, with Jairus Campbell and Ted Ouellet taking the other slot. Bryan Thomas and Charlie Walker are battling for the starting job at the other end. Middle linebacker goes to second-team All-MAC pick Dwayne Woods, while Paul Swan likely starts next to Woods, with D.J. Lynch, Gabe Martin, Jason Rice and Eric Jordan all involved. Returning starter Cameron Truss and DeVon McKoy are the corners, backed up by Adrien Spencer and Aunre’ Davis. Boo Boo Gates could possibly challenge Keith Morgan for the start at Rover. Jovan Leacock returns at one safety, with Aaron Foster at the other. Ryland Ward and Austin Collier are pushing for playing time at safety as well.

2011 Bowling Green Special Teams:

Jerry Phillips, who has punted and done placekicking in his first two years at Bowling Green, and Brian Schmiedebusch, a transfer from the University of Findlay, spent the spring competing for the punting duties. Stephen Stein, a walk-on who has never kicked in a game, has emerged as the starting placekicker. There are other options at both spots, and incoming freshman Tyler Tate could win one or both jobs.

2011 Bowling Green Predictions:

Coach Dave Clawson finally has his stamp on the program in his third season. It’s still a very young group, but there are enough strengths in the right places that the Falcons should be able to make a jump after suffering through a 2–10 season a year ago. The Falcons have 38 lettermen and 13 starters back, and there is continuity on the coaching staff. Clawson built powerhouse programs at Richmond and Fordham and was named the D-I-AA Coach of the Year twice, once at each stop. He has a lot more work to do in order to contend for similar honors at Bowling Green.

2010 Record: 13-0 MWC Record: 8-0 2011 Returning Starters: 13: 5 offense, 6 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Gary Patterson, 98–28 (11 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Jarrett Anderson, Justin Fuente Defensive Coordinators: Dick Bumpas

2011 TCU Players to Watch: QB Casey Pachall, RB Ed Wesley, WR Josh Boyce, DE Stansly Maponga, DE Braylon Broughton, DT O.J. Yendrey, LB Tank Carder, LB Tanner Brock

2011 TCU Strengths:
TCU returns most of its linebacker corps with Carder and Brock leading the way for a defense that has topped the nation the past three years. This defensive line, with potential game-changers on each end, could be better than the 2010 squad.

2011 TCU Weaknesses:
The offensive line was not solidified in the spring with left tackle James Dunbar still fighting to earn the starting job. Only one lineman has extensive experience (left guard Kyle Dooley with 26 starts), so giving Pachall protection could be an issue.

2011 TCU Offense:

The face of the Horned Frogs will have a new look. Andy Dalton has moved onto the NFL, which leaves the reins to Casey Pachall, a sophomore who arrived at TCU as a highly touted recruit in January 2009. Pachall has the skills, but it remains to be seen whether he can come close to replacing Dalton’s leadership. Pachall has big-play receivers in Josh Boyce and Antoine Hicks, plus the speedy Skye Dawson. Boyce led TCU in receiving with 646 yards as a freshman in 2010. The Frogs may use their tight ends more to give Pachall time to develop his sea legs early in the season with shorter, high-percentage passes to big targets Logan Brock and Corey Fuller. Ed Wesley leads a stacked group of running backs that includes Matthew Tucker and Waymon James, who were the Frogs’ second- and third-leading rushers last season, and two backs with a ton of hype redshirt freshman Dwight Smith, who shined in the spring, and Aundre Dean, a one-time UCLA Bruin and a former 4-star recruit. A bigger area of concern than the loss of Dalton is the offensive line. Only guard Kyle Dooley returns as a full-time starter to a unit that held opponents to just nine sacks in 2010. Left tackle James Dunbar and center James Fry are tasked with replacing All-Americans Marcus Cannon and Jake Kirkpatrick, respectively.

2011 TCU Defense:

TCU’s defensive line should be a strength, led by ends Stansly Maponga and Braylon Broughton. Maponga showed his potential as a redshirt freshman in 2010, while Broughton, now a senior, could finally live up to the advance billing that began when he was named the Mountain West Conference Preseason Freshman of the Year in 2008. Defensive tackle D.J. Yendrey and nose tackle Jeremy Coleman had good springs, too. The entire linebacker corps returns, including starters Tank Carder and Tanner Brock, the soul of the Frogs’ 4-2-5 scheme. Carder, a first-team All-American in ’10, did not practice during the spring after undergoing shoulder surgery in early January, but coaches know what to expect from the experienced senior. The one area of concern for the defense is the secondary, if not in athletic ability then in sheer experience. Only one full-time starter returns, cornerback Greg McCoy, though weak safety Tekerrein Cuba logged five starts in 2010. The rest of the spots will be first-time starters, although coach Gary Patterson was pleased with their progress during spring practice.

2011 TCU Special Teams:

Perhaps the most stable aspect of the team is the kicking game. Experienced senior placekicker Ross Evans returns for his fourth season after making 11 of 13 held goal attempts in 2010. Evans has made 42 of 51 held goal tries in his career, and holds school career records for extra points made (178) and attempted (191). Punter Anson Kelton averaged a career-high 41.6 yards per kick last season and has the ability to pin opponents deep.

2011 TCU Predictions:

If the offensive line jells enough to give Pachall time to relax, he could survive the growing pains associated with first-year starting quarterbacks and be very effective. Wesley and Boyce are legitimate big-play weapons who could help take the pressure off the new quarterback. TCU should be as dominant as ever on defense with several key players returning. The question is not whether the talent level is the same as 2010 (it is), but whether the Frogs can find a similar mix of leadership and magic. With a favorable schedule, TCU, although likely not a BCS-caliber team in 2011, should lose no more than two games and earn its eighth consecutive bowl appearance.

2010 Record: 8-5 2011 Returning Starters: 19, 9 offense, 8 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Brian Kelly, 8–5 (1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Charley Molnar Defensive Coordinators: Bob Diaco

2011 Notre Dame Players to Watch: QB Dayne Crist, RB Cierre Wood, WR Michael Royd, WR Theo Riddick, TE Tyler Eifert, LB Manti Te’o, LB Darius Fleming, S Harrison Smith

2011 Notre Dame Strengths:
The defense made big strides at the end of last season, and with most of the starters retuming, the Irish will look to build on that stretch, led by Te’o at middle linebacker. Crist, who has had two knee surgeries, and Tommy Rees give Notre Dame options at Quarterback.

2011 Notre Dame Weaknesses:
There is little depth at running back with only scholarship players Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray entering the season healthy. The Irish might have to rush freshman Cam McDaniel into duty if there is an injury, or if Gray doesn’t pan out as Wood’s backup.

2011 Notre Dame Offense:

Although the Irish have two quarterbacks with playing experience which is two more than they had a year ago at this time the position remains a bit unsettled with the talented Dayne Crist and the savvy Tommy Rees reaching for the starting job. Crist went 4–5 as the starter without much help from a rushing attack or a defense. When Rees took over for the injured Crist, both the running game and the defense picked up, which made Rees a winner despite his three interceptions and a fumble in a comeback victory at USC. Now talented youngsters Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson are in the mix. The Irish are lacking depth at running back and receiver, but they still boast a decent starting unit with Cierre Wood at running back, Michael Floyd, Theo Riddick and TJ Jones at wide receiver, and Tyler Eifert at tight end. The Irish need senior Jonas Gray (75 career carries) to provide the big-back option that graduated Robert Hughes offered in victories over USC and Miami. Senior John Goodman (15 catches) and junior Robby Toma (14) also will be in the mix at receiver, as will senior Mike Ragone, redshirt freshman Alex Welch, and possibly true freshman Ben Koyack at tight end. The line is the most settled area on offense with starters returning at both tackles (Taylor Dever and Zack Martin), right guard (Trevor Robinson) and center (Braxston Cave).

2011 Notre Dame Defense:

Eight starters are back from a defense that improved as the 2010 season progressed, including junior inside linebacker Manti Te’o, whose 133 tackles were the most by an Irish defender in 27 seasons. Te’o is joined along the front seven by veteran ends Kapron Lewis-Moore and Ethan Johnson, as well as four exciting up-and-comers redshirt freshman nose guard Louis Nix III, true freshman ends Aaron Lynch and Stephon Tuitt, and true freshman outside linebacker Ishaq Williams. The outside linebacker corps also is solid with veteran Darius Fleming at the Cat outside linebacker spot and sophomore Prince Shembo at the Dog outside linebacker position. The Irish lost a good one in the secondary to graduation cornerback Darrin Walls but Gary Gray and Robert Blanton both excelled in 2010 and are playing with confidence and a swagger. Tying it all together on the back end is fifth-year senior Harrison Smith, whose seven interceptions in 2010 were the most by an Irish defensive back in eight seasons.

2011 Notre Dame Special Teams:

David Ruffer has made 23 of 24 field goal attempts in his career, and the former walk-on owns the school record with 18 in a row. Ben Turk has averaged just more than 38 yards per punt in the past two seasons and seeks more consistency. Notre Dame averaged a mere 5.4 yards per punt return. Bennett Jackson needs to build on his kickoff return performance of 22.2 yards per return.

2011 Notre Dame Predictions:

Most of the defenders who spearheaded the 2010 revival are returning, and so are most of those skill position athletes who were forced into the lineup prematurely due to injuries. Sprinkle Floyd back into the mix, maximize Wood’s abilities, and find a quarterback who can avoid the crucial mistake, and it looks like the Irish should be able to generate enough offense to accommodate an improving and suddenly depth-laden defense. The combination of Kelly’s offensive track record and the improving defense could send the Irish in pursuit of a BCS bid in 2011.

2010 Record: 7-6 MWC Record: 5-3 (T-3rd) 2011 Returning Starters: 18; 10 offense, 7 defense, punter

Coach: Bronco Mendenhall, 56-21 (6 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Brandon Doman Defensive Coordinators: Bronco Mendenhall

2011 BYU Players to Watch: QB Jake Heaps, RB JJ Di Luigi, WR McKay Jacobson, OT Matt Reynolds, LB Jordan Pendleton

2011 BYU Strengths:
The veteran offense is without an apparent weakness. As a sophomore, Heaps looks to become the top-notch pro prospect many thought he could – and will – be. All-American Matt Reynolds anchors a typical BYU dominant line.

2011 BYU Weaknesses:
Injuries on defense last season to key players such as Pendleton and DT Romney Fuga contributed to some big holes. They need to come back strong in 2011, when the schedule is particularly tough early.

2011 BYU Offense:

BYU hopes the finish of the 2010 season was the start of something big. With quarterback Jake Heaps and two other freshmen in starring roles offensively, the Cougars rolled past UTEP 52–24 in the New Mexico Bowl and launched themselves into a new era with some momentum. This season, as BYU plays an independent schedule after leaving the Mountain West Conference, an offense now being coordinated by former Cougar quarterback Brandon Doman should keep improving. Heaps and the offense started slowly while he initially shared the position, but he led BYU to six wins in the last eight games, highlighted by his four-touchdown effort against UTEP. Heaps’ biggest challenge as a sophomore will be to increase his 57.2 completion percentage. The other playmakers include receiver Cody Hoffman, who capped his freshman season with eight catches for 137 yards and three scores in the New Mexico Bowl, and running back Joshua Quezada, who also finished his first year in fine fashion with 101 yards against UTEP. Mix in the versatile JJ Di Luigi, a running back who led BYU with 45 receptions, and Doman will have plenty of options in his first season as a playcaller. Devin Mahina should become more of a factor in the passing game, after none of BYU’s tight ends caught a touchdown pass in 2010. It should help that the offensive line is seasoned. Left tackle Matt Reynolds’ decision to return for his senior year rather than enter the NFL Draft was a big bonus, and he joins three other returning starters.

2011 BYU Defense:

From his perspective on the other side during spring drills, Doman says BYU’s defense is the school’s best in 10 years. Coach Bronco Mendenhall took over the defense last October, firing his coordinator after five games. The Cougars improved steadily from that point. The line is active and athletic, led by Eathyn Manumaleuna and Matt Putnam. The linebackers in the 3-4 scheme should be productive. Kyle Van Noy ranked second on the team with 7.5 tackles for a loss as a part-time player, and Brandon Ogletree added five tackles for a loss. The player everyone talked about in the spring was USC transfer Uona Kaveinga, who earned a starting job after redshirting last season. In the secondary, BYU will miss safety Andrew Rich, who led the team in tackles and interceptions. Free safety Travis Uale is the only returning starter, but Daniel Sorensen shows some of Rich’s qualities at strong safety, and Corby Eason and Robbie Buckner are capable cornerbacks.

2011 BYU Special Teams:

This is a traditional BYU strength in both the kicking and return departments. Former Parade All-American Justin Sorensen returns from a mission to be the placekicker. Starting punter Riley Stephenson is back after averaging 42.0 yards per boot.

2011 BYU Predictions:

Piecing together a 2011 schedule after declaring its independence, BYU ended up with a demanding September slate of Ole Miss, Texas, Utah and UCF. How the Cougars handle those first four games will largely determine their success. The biggest question regarding last season is whether the Cougars truly improved in the second half, or if the schedule merely eased. The offense should be more settled and confident from the start with Heaps established as the quarterback, but the unit must prove itself against good competition.

2010 Record: 1-12 WAC Record: 0-8 (9th) 2011 Returning Starters: 19: 6 offense, 11 defense, punter, kicker

Coach: Mike MacIntyre, 1-12 (1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: John DeFilippo Defensive Coordinators: Kent Baer

2011 San Jose State Players to Watch: RB Brandon Rutley, WR Noel Grigsby, OT David Quessenberry, LB Keith Smith, LB Tiuke Tulpulotu, S Duke Ihenacho, K/P Harrison Wald

2011 San Jose State Strengths:
San Jose State welcomes back plenty of experience from a team that won only one game: that counts for something, right? Macintyre certainty hopes so. Spring was spent fine-tuning what was leamed a year ago. Alot of talented sophomores are roaming free.

2011 San Jose State Weaknesses:
The Spartans weren’t very good last year in any phase of the game. They spent the spring looking for anew signal-caller and trying to solidify adefense that gave up too many yards and points. Yes, having alot of returning starters is normally agood thing. But these guys need to improve in order for that theory to hold true here.

2011 San Jose State Offense:

The Spartans return five of their top six pass-receivers as well as two of their top three rushers and a solid nucleus on the offensive line. But starting quarterback Jordan La Secla, who passed for 2,860 yards and 16 touchdowns, must be replaced. Second-year coach Mike MacIntyre gave senior Matt Faulkner, sophomore Dasmen Stewart and redshirt freshman Blake Jurich equal reps during spring practice and doesn’t plan to pick a starter until fall camp. That opens the door for highly touted true freshman Joseph Gray, a first-team All-Los Angeles City Section pick at famed Dorsey High School. MacIntyre calls him “a big-time quarterback.” Versatile senior Brandon Rutley, who has 16 career starts and has played some quarterback in the Wildcat formation, returns to lead a solid group of running backs that includes junior David Freeman and redshirt freshman Ben Thompson. The offensive line features six players who have started at least 11 games in their career, led by senior tackle Andres Vargas. Big things are also expected from Jon Meyer, a first-team junior college All-American who took part in spring practice and can play either guard or tackle. Wide receiver figures to be the strength of the offense. Sophomores Noel Grigsby and Chandler Jones both finished in the top 10 in the WAC in receiving as freshmen, with 56 and 54 receptions, respectively; and MacIntyre cites another sophomore, Kyle Nunn, as blossoming over winter workouts. The Spartans also got a big boost when Mike Avila, who missed the entire 2010 season following ACL surgery, was granted a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

2011 San Jose State Defense:

San Jose State returns 11 starters on this side of the ball. Considering the Spartans allowed an average of 34.7 points and 463.7 yards per game a year ago, that might not necessarily be a good thing. But MacIntyre believes a productive offseason in the weight room for this young unit will pay big dividends as will the return of two-time first-team All-WAC safety Duke Ihenacho from a foot injury. Ihenacho, one of only four players in school history to earn first team All-WAC honors in back-to-back seasons, injured that foot in the team’s season-opening 48–3 loss at Alabama. He was one of nine Spartan senior starters to suffer season-ending injuries in the first two games of the season. He has 195 tackles and six interceptions in 32 career starts and is considered an NFL prospect. The strength of the team is at linebacker, where sophomore Keith Smith earned 2010 WAC Freshman of the Year honors after racking up 116 tackles, including 14 for a loss, and four sacks. Another sophomore, Vince Buhagiar, finished ninth in the WAC with 89 takedowns.

2011 San Jose State Special Teams:

Sophomore Harrison Waid serves as the placekicker and the punter. He finished second in the WAC in punting, averaging 43.8 yards per attempt. Waid also hit 14 of 22 neld goal attempts, including a long of 46 yards against Utah State. And he handles the kickoffs. MacIntyre did look at another placekicker in the spring game, but for now, Waid is the man to do it all. Rutley is the return man on punts, with Ronnie Yell and Brandon Driver back to return kicks. The Spartans didn’t generate a touchdown in the return game last year and gave up two on punts.

2011 San Jose State Predictions:

San Jose State suffered through an injury-plagued 1–12 season in MacIntyre’s first year as the boss, fielding only 43 healthy scholarship players for the team’s 26–23 season-ending overtime loss at Idaho. But the shorthanded Spartans lost four of those games by a combined 10 points and gave Big Ten heavyweight Wisconsin all it could handle before losing 27–14 in Madison. A deeper, stronger and more experienced San Jose State team is worth keeping an eye on in 2011.

2011 Idaho Players to Watch: QB Brian Reader, RB Ryan Bass, TE Taylor Elmo, WR Annauni Johnson, WR Justin Veltung, DE Benson Mayowa, LB Tre’Shawn Robinson, LB Homer Mauga

2011 Idaho Strengths:
Despite losing its leader in S Shiloh Keo and potentially losing its leading tackler in Robert Siavii to injury, the defense returns alot of starters, experience and depth. The linebacking corps, in particular, has several veterans. The secondary, despite the loss of Thaad Thompson to injury, should be better in 201l.

2011 Idaho Weaknesses:
A new quarterback always raises questions, but an offensive line that allowed 3.46 sacks per game last year – the fourth highest total in the nation – raises more. It’s an experienced group, but injuries and a new coach will leave the offensive front with alot of work to do in the fall.

2011 Idaho Offense:

For the first time since 2006, Nathan Enderle won’t be under center. The good news for Idaho is that his replacement senior Brian Reader has plenty of experience and a grasp on coordinator Steve Axman’s offense. He completed 59 percent of his throws with five touchdowns and one interception a year ago and started two games as a sophomore when Enderle was injured. Reader will be throwing to a receiving corps that lost three of its top four producers, but there are enough playmakers returning to make Idaho’s passing game the strength of the offense once again. Preston Davis led the wideouts with 31 receptions last year, and deep threats Justin Veltung and Armauni Johnson will stretch the field. A corps of young, experienced tight ends also return. Running back Kama Bailey is also a weapon in the passing game. Idaho needs to improve its rushing offense. After generating a paltry 88 yards per game last season, expect that to be a focal point this fall. Three of the top four ground gainers are back, and Arizona State transfer Ryan Bass should make an immediate impact. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry in limited duty at ASU in 2009. The question, for the second year in a row, is the offensive line. Three starters are back, led by senior tackles Matt Cleveland and Tyrone Novikoff. In addition to struggling in run blocking a year ago, the Vandals yielded 45 sacks.

2011 Idaho Defense:

The biggest playmakers end Aaron Lavarias (9.5 sacks) and safety Shiloh Keo (three interceptions) are gone. But Idaho did play a lot of people last season and the overall depth, size and speed on the unit should be improved. The linebacking corps will be the strength of coordinator Mark Criner’s defense as three players with starting experience return, though the status of senior Robert Siavii is unknown after he suffered a knee injury in the spring. He led the Vandals with 91 tackles and four forced fumbles. Cornerback should be another area where Idaho should be capable. Three corners who started at some point last season Aaron Grymes, Kenneth Patten and Matthew Harvey are back and all have shown the ability to cover and tackle. Free safety Gary Walker is a returning starter, and the Vandals could play four safeties in the rotation and in a variety of packages. Depth on the defensive line is a plus, but the Vandals will need big years out of tackle Michael Cosgrove and end Benson Mayowa if the front is going to do more than hold its own.

2011 Idaho Special Teams:

Idaho’ returns kicker Trey Farquhar and first-team All-WAC punter Bobby Cowan. Farquhar connected on 18 of 25 field goal attempts, while Cowan averaged 45.1 yards per punt.

2011 Idaho Predictions:

The Vandals hope to get back on the winning track after falling a game short of a bowl last season. The key could be the development of the offensive line. Idaho’s defense has improved each year in the Akey era, and if that trend continues, the Vandals are capable of being successful on that side of the ball. The schedule is challenging with two games against BCS foes, but two open weeks should help the team stay healthy.

2010 Record: 1-11 C-USA Record: 0-8 (6th, East) 2011 Returning Starters: 10; 3 offense, 5 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Larry Porter, 1-11

Offensive Coordinators: Blake Miller, Eric Price Defensive Coordinators: Jay Hopson

2011 Memphis Players to Watch: RB Jerrell Rhodes, WR Marcus Rucker, WR Billy Foster, DT Dontari Poe, DT Frank Trotter, CB Mohammed Seisay

2011 Memphis Strengths:
A defensive front coached by former Alabama head coach Mike DuBose is expected to create havoc in Conference USA. Poe is an athletic 6-5, 350 pounds, while tackle Trotter is a run-stopper. The offense will become more spread-oriented giving Rucker a chance to shine. After an impressive spring, Foster is poised to become the team’s big-play threat.

2011 Memphis Weaknesses:
Memphis lost starting quarterback Ryan Williams, who decided to transfer as spring practice began. The departure of WIlliams, a true freshman last year, means the program will not have a quarterback on the roster who has taken a snap at this level. Depth at running back is thin behind Rhodes.

2011 Memphis Offense:

After the Tigers lost 11 games for the first time in the program’s nearly 100-year history, second-year coach Larry Porter has installed a spread-oriented attack, mindful that playing in Conference USA requires the ability to score points in bunches. To that end, he shook up some of his staff’s responsibilities, giving quarterbacks coach Kevin McGiven familiar with the spread at his previous stops the playcalling duties. New offensive line coach Blake Miller was given the title of co-offensive coordinator. Porter is hoping the changes will boost an offense that ranked 119th nationally in scoring (14.4 ppg) and 117th overall (285.0 ypg). Former junior college transfer Andy Summerlin sits atop the depth chart at quarterback after sophomore Ryan Williams opted to transfer. Summerlin was in the mix last year but injured his shoulder in the spring and missed the season. He should get healthy competition from Wake Forest transfer Skylar Jones and freshman dual-threat Taylor Reed. Jones completed 13 of 27 passes for 119 yards last year, but is a better athlete than a proven quarterback. The team’s top returning running back is Jerrell Rhodes, a hard-nosed, physical, between-the-tackles runner. He’ll receive help from mid-year enrollee Jamere Valentine, a 6’1″, 215-pound junior college transfer who was signed as a receiver.Junior Marcus Rucker returns as the team’s deep threat and most experienced receiver after catching 41 passes for 704 yards and eight touchdowns. The only returning starter up front is senior left tackle Ron Leary, who began his career blocking in a spread offense and will end it operating out of that scheme.

2011 Memphis Defense:

The strength of the defense, and perhaps the team, will be on the defensive front. Tackles Frank Trotter and Dontari Poe have the ability to play at the next level. Trotter, a senior, finished second on the unit with 80 tackles and had a team-high16.5 tackles for a loss. Poe, a 6’5″, 350-pound junior, played the role of run-stopper but has also spent plenty of time in opposing backfields. While the linebacking corps lost one of the leading tacklers in the country in Jamon Hughes, it may gain in athleticism. Former Auburn Tiger DeRon Furr has battled migraines at various times during his career, but he’s a playmaker. He had seven tackles for a loss a year ago and was second among linebackers with 58 stops. The Tigers ranked 116th nationally in pass defense last season, but several potentially productive defensive backs return, including a pair of sophomore cornerbacks Mohammed Seisay, who was impressive in spring workouts, and Taurean Nixon. Safety Derek Smith is expected to return after missing the 2010 season with a knee injury.

2011 Memphis Special Teams:

Junior Paulo Henriques returns to handle the placekicking duties. Sophomore Tom Homsey, a former Australian Rules Football player, is back after a solid first year, his first playing American college football where the Tigers must make vast improvement is in the return games, which ranked near the bottom of the NCAA statistics.

2011 Memphis Predictions:

Memphis has won only three games the past two seasons, the lowest win total during a two-year stretch since 1985-86, and Porter faces another challenging task as he implements a new offense with a new quarterback. Defensively, the Tigers are in a two-year slide, too. The growth of a young secondary will be key to a reversal of fortune on that side of the ball. Memphis appears headed for another last-place finish in C-USA’s East Division.

2010 Record: 4-8 C-USA Record: 2-6 (6th, West) 2011 Returning Starters: 15; 6 offense, 7 defense, punter. kicker

Coach: Bob Toledo, 13-35 (4 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Greg Davis Jr. & Mark Hutson Defensive Coordinators: Steve Stanard

2011 Tulane Players to Watch: QB Ryan Griffin, RB Orleans Darkwa, OT Pat Husain, DE Dezman Moses, LB Trent Mackey, CB Jordan Sullen,

2011 Tulane Strengths:
Tulane has answers in the backfield and should have the kind of improved offense that can keep pace in Conference USA. The Green Wave has the personnel to improve on Its total of 25 sacks from a year ago, and talented ends will help ease concerns in the secondary by providing frontend pressure.

2011 Tulane Weaknesses:
There are Questions at receiver and in the secondary. The defense allowed more than 40 points in six games last season and will face many Quality offenses again. The Green Wave finishes with four of five games on the road.

2011 Tulane Offense:

Tulane coach Bob Toledo is searching for more offensive playmakers at wide receiver. But he has a playmaker at quarterback in Ryan Griffin and at running back in Orleans Darkwa. Griffin threw for 2,371 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games last season while fighting through the pain of shoulder, wrist and foot injuries. Toledo expects even more out of the California native this season. Darkwa burst onto the college scene last year by rushing for 925 yards with 11 touchdowns as a true freshman despite missing most of two games with an elbow injury. Toledo will build the offense around those two players and also has three more running backs Albert Williams, Jamar Thomas and Stephen Barnett capable of big things. One major problem, however, is the lack of a solid backup for Griffin. D.J. Ponder could become the answer at backup quarterback, but he lost valuable time in the spring while playing baseball. Ryan Grant will be the team’s go-to receiver. Also, former quarterback Joe Kemp is a big target, and Wilson Van Hooser is poised for big production. Toledo might rely on true freshmen to add depth at receiver. He also says that redshirt freshman tight end Matt Marfisi could be headed toward big things. Depth is a problem up front, which could halt the offensive production if injuries should arise. Guards Zach Morgan, Emmanuel Aluko and Harris Howard, center Joey Ray and tackle Eric Jones all have starting experience.

2011 Tulane Defense:

The Green Wave had trouble stopping the run and allowed too many big plays last season. Shoring up those two areas is a major concern. Middle linebacker Trent Mackey had 124 tackles last season and should produce at the same rate this season. Toledo says weak-side linebacker Darryl Farley has the same type of talent as Mackey even though he hasn’t produced the same numbers. Speedy sophomore Dominique Robertson is a future star at strong-side linebacker. Toledo believes cornerback Jordan Sullen has NFL size and ability, and safety Shakiel Smith had 90 tackles last season. Those two will be called upon to prevent the long pass plays. Ryan Travis and Alex Lauricella will share the other cornerback spot. Travis was the team’s nickel back last season. Tulane is solid up front with the defensive end tandem of Dezman Moses and Austen Jacks leading the way. Moses, the most athletic player up front, had 11.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks last season, while Jacks had 59 tackles.

2011 Tulane Special Teams:

Tulane hired veteran assistant John Hendrick to coach special teams. He assisted the special teams for two NFL teams – the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers. The Green Wave has been ranked poorly in many special teams categories, including 114th in kickoff returns and 118th nationally in kickoff return yardage defense. Cairo Santos, the returning kicker, is a highlight of the unit. He got stronger in the offseason after making 13 of 16 field goal attempts as a true freshman.

2011 Tulane Predictions:

Toledo has won 13 games in his first four seasons at Tulane. Obviously, that’s not good enough. Defining a successful season in his fifth year in New Orleans is simple: Tulane needs to reach bowl-eligibility or the pressure on Toledo to keep his job will increase. The good news is that Tulane is better equipped to win games than at any time in Toledo’s tenure. Now let’s see if that results in the wins he needs.
