# 8 Xavier Musketeers vs Butler Bulldogs
Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 9:00 PM EST on ESPN

Spread: Xavier -5.5
Money Line: Xavier -240 / Butler +2000

College Basketball Odds: Mid-Major Matchup Pits Xavier Against Butler

The Xavier Musketeers will look to add to their impressive 2011-12 campaign with a victory over the Butler Bulldogs this Wednesday. Nothing adds to early season confidence like a win over the previous season’s NCAA Tournament runner-up.

Click Here for more FREE EXPERT NCAA Basketball Picks

Though Butler struggled at times in November, there’s no denying the threat they pose to opposing teams on any given night. That’s the effect consecutive trips to the national championship will have on a team.

As a result, the No. 11-ranked Musketeers will have to show up ready to play if they hope to defend their spot in the AP polls and on the NCAA basketball futures list. They may not be a shoo-in to win the tournament yet, but the program’s March Madness odds are creeping up slowly.

Has Xavier’s success this season been a product of their schedule? We’ll find out. Aside from a Nov. 28 overtime win over No. 19 Vanderbilt, all of the Musketeers’ wins have come against unranked opponents.

It may not be the juggernaut matchup casual fans are looking for on the docket, but the December bout between two mid-major conferences is a fine opportunity for college basketball betting fans to get a good look at some of the wildcard teams they may later see in their March Madness brackets.

Will it be the suspiciously highly-ranked Musketeers walking away on top? Or everybody’s favorite underdog making headlines yet again?

The odds makers have the Xavier Musketeers as a -5.5 point favorite with an over/under of 124.

Though it may not seem like the juggernaut matchup fans out west would have expected, when the No. 9 Oregon Ducks and unranked UCLA Bruins kick off in the Pac-12 Football Championship this Friday, each will take the field with a refreshingly clean slate.

Click Here for FREE Expert NCAA Football Picks

Though the 6-6 Bruins aren’t exactly championship material, the particular way that the cards have played out in the Pac-12 conference this year has allowed them the first ever South Division berth to the inaugural conference championship game.

It may have taken the automatic elimination of sanction-suffering USC for them to get there in an already comparatively week South Division, but that doesn’t mean they won’t look to capitalize on the opportunity.

And what an opportunity it was. In the North Division, the Ducks lay claim to the championship berth despite a matching record with No. 4-ranked Stanford. Though the Cardinal will move on to a bowl game of their own, their Nov. 12 loss to the Ducks is what ultimately spelled their fate in the conference.

UCLA may be overwhelming underdogs on the NCAA betting lines heading into the game, but recently fired head coach Rick Neuheisal will be looking for a way to end his Bruins tenure with a bang. With a prize like a Rose Bowl berth dangling over their heads, anything can happen.

LSU Tigers vs Arkansas Razorbacks
Friday, November 25, 2011 at 2:30 PM EST on CBS

Spread: LSU Tigers -11.5
Money Line: LSU Tigers -440 / Arkansas Razorbacks +340
Over/Under: 52.5

For the first time in BCS history, the top three teams in the standings all hail from the same conference. In this case, from the same division, no less. This Saturday two of those top three SEC West Division clubs will square off against each other when No. 3 Arkansas visits top-ranked LSU to close out the regular season.

Thanks to a seven-game win streak following their September loss to Alabama, the Arkansas Razorbacks have emerged as a national contender on the NCAA football betting landscape. Their rise up the standings, coupled with LSU’s undefeated campaign, makes the upcoming Week 13 tilt one of the most anticipated of the season.

Think you know how the biggest game on the college football odds board will go down?

With a conference championship game bid still very much on the line for either squad – as well as a ticket to the BCS National Championship game in January – all eyes will be in Louisiana to see how the country’s toughest division shakes out.

Can Tyler Wilson continue to guide his Razorbacks in the air against a Tigers team that allows just 10.0 points per game? There’s a reason why LSU has held the No. 1 spot in the BCS Standings ever since they bounced No. 2 Alabama in a 9-6 overtime slugfest.

The odds makers have the LSU Tigers as a -11.5 point favorite with an over/under of 52.5.

St. Johns Red Storm vs Arizona Wildcats
Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 9:30 PM EST on ESPN2

Spread: Arizona -2.5
Money Line: Arizona -145 / St. Johns +125

The St. John’s Red Storm will face their toughest test of the young season this Thursday as they tip off against the No. 16-ranked Arizona Wildcats at the 2K Sports Classic in New York. With what’s shaping up to be a competitive season in the Big East fast approaching, the heavyweight matchup will serve as a true test of the team’s mettle.

Though the Red Storm are distant National Championship contenders at best, they remain an intriguing choice on the college basketball odds board as a potential darkhorse power in the Big East. They may not have the firepower of Connecticut or Louisville, but they have benefited early on from the rounded contributions of their first-year players.

With freshmen Moe Harkless and D’Angelo Harrison serving as valuable options on offense, and with first-year upperclassmen God’sgift Achiuwa and Nurideen Lindsey thriving in their first years in uniform, the Red Storm have emerged as an interesting, albeit unconventional, threat.

Will it be enough to thwart Kyle Fogg and the Wildcats? The jury is still out. Though both St. John’s and Arizona approach the game with unbeaten 3-0 records, the Wildcats have done so with the sort of blue chip roster that has made them a perennial contender.

The odds makers have the Arizona Wildcats as a -2.5 point favorite.

Will we see the Red Storm continue to rise over the course of the season? Or is the ceiling pretty much set on their season. You be the judge.

2010 Record: 4-8 Sun Belt Record: 4-4 (T-4th) 2011 Returning Starters: 16; 7 offense, 7 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Hugh Freeze, First Season

Offensive Coordinators: Hugh Freeze Defensive Coordinators: Dave Wommack

2011 Arkansas State Players to Watch: QB Ryan Aplin, WR Dwayne Frampton, WR Allen Muse, RB Derek Lawson, C Tom Castilaw, DE Dorvus Woods, LB Demario Davis, SS Kelde McCray

2011 Arkansas State Strengths:
Aplin was first-team All-Sun Belt last year and is an accurate passer who has three of his top four targets back. The running game looks to be in good hands with the return of Lawson, plus Aplin is a running threat the secondary and ends look to be the strengths of the defense.

2011 Arkansas State Weaknesses:
The offensive line will have four new starters, and that could hamper the consistency on offense, especially early on. The Wolves had trouble stopping the run ayear ago, giving up more than 206 yards a game, but they hope some new pieces yield better results.

2011 Arkansas State Offense:

If the Sun Belt Conference played 7-on-7 football, the Red Wolves would be a runaway league favorite. The problem for Arizona State is up front, where all-league center Tom Castilaw is not just the only returning starter he’s the only lineman that saw more than occasional action. If Castilaw can get his mates to his level and ASU fills those gaping needs, the offense should be a potent one. First-team all-league quarterback Ryan Aplin set school records for completions (252), passing yards (2,939), total offense (3,416) and touchdowns (21) as a sophomore and now has another year in coach Hugh Freeze’s offense. He also rushed for 11 scores and completed 61.5 percent of his passes, a number that could go up since his top three targets all return. Starting wide outs Dwayne Frampton, Allen Muse and Taylor Stockemer combined for 1,933 yards and 16 scores last year, and all had at least one 50-yard touchdown catch. Tight end Kedric Murry figures to be a bigger staple in the throwing game after catching only nine passes last season. The Wolves are also stocked at running back, with every player that had more than 10 yards rushing in 2010 returning. Along with Aplin’s dual-threat talents (477 rush yards), starting tailback Derek Lawson is back after a 500-yard season, Jermaine Robertson is a solid backup, and Sirgregory Thornton provides a breakaway threat. Thornton averaged 6.8 yards on his 38 rushing attempts as a freshman. All they need is the front wall to provide some chances but that remains to be seen. ASU did sign five junior college offensive linemen, so immediate help may be available.

2011 Arkansas State Defense:

Sack machine Bryan Hall may be gone, but Arkansas State’s defensive front will again be solid especially on the ends. Former Texas A&M signee Brandon Joiner and ball-hawk Justin Robertson are back at the ends, and all-league pick Dorvus Woods provides an inside force, as does Freshman All-American pick Amos Draper. That unit was solid against the pass (27 sacks) last season but needs to improve on stopping the run for ASU to be a defensive force. Linebackers Nathan Herrold and Demario Davis combined for 141 tackles last year and head up one of the deepest units on the defense, while safety Kelcie McCray is the team’s top returning tackler (79) to go with six career interceptions. He’ll need to have another big year as the Wolves must fill two starting secondary spots.

2011 Arkansas State Special Teams:

Sophomores Brian Davis and Bobby Zalud will carry their competition for kicking duties into the fall. Davis had the advantage last year, going six of eight on field goal attempts to Zalud’s 6-of-13 effort. Senior Neely Sullivent is the incumbent punter (40.7-yard average). Senior Roderick Hall (8.2 yards on punt returns, 23.1 on kickoffs) and Frampton will handle return chores.

2011 Arkansas State Predictions:

Freeze was Arkansas State’s offensive coordinator last year before taking over for dismissed nine-year boss Steve Roberts, and even though the Wolves have new run-game and pass-game coordinators, Freeze will still call plays. That’s a plus for a unit that has many weapons in the skill positions, but ASU won’t go far unless a thrown-together offensive front jells quickly. That may put more pressure on a realigned defense, one that will have multiple looks and will try to limit the big plays that were too frequent from opposing offenses last year.

2010 Record: 6-7 Sun Belt Record: 5-3 (3rd) 2011 Returning Starters: 12; 7 offense, 3 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Rick Stockstill, 33-30 (5 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Willie Simmons Defensive Coordinators: Steve Ellis

2011 Middle Tennessee Players to Watch: RB Benjamin Cunningham, WR Malcolm Beyah, OL Mike Williams, DE Omar McLendon, LB Darin Davis, LB Justin Jones, CB Amess Ikner, K Alan Gendreau

2011 Middle Tennessee Strengths:
The offensive line is a salty bunch with the return of four starters. Newcomers also saw extra time in the spring when three starters were out with injuries. Wide receiver has potential, and the linebacking corps looks solid.

2011 Middle Tennessee Weaknesses:
The defensive front four will have all new starters and will likely have two freshmen starting. The run defense was a big liability in 2010, and that could very well be the case again. Quarterback needs to get settled fast. Neither Logan Kilgore nor Jeff Murphy emerged in the spring.

2011 Middle Tennessee Offense:

Quarterback Dwight Dasher is gone, which provides both good and bad news. He was a record-breaking runner/passer, but Dasher was also the major source of MTSU’s 38 turnovers, which led the nation. Logan Kilgore and Jeff Murphy will compete for the starting job, and Willie Simmons was promoted to coordinator in hopes of recharging the up-tempo attack. Four starters return on the offensive line, and proven running backs Ben Cunningham and D.D. Kyles should provide a good mix of rushing and pass-catching in the spread offense. But the offense lacked big plays and a vertical passing game last season. Kilgore’s strong arm can stretch the field, but he needs senior wideouts Sancho McDonald and Malcolm Beyah to finally reach their full potential. Redshirt freshman Reggie Whatley was moved from running back to wideout to add some big-play pop to the receiving corps. Receivers and linemen were ravaged by injuries in the spring, and both need to mend in order to provide strengths for the offense.

2011 Middle Tennessee Defense:

Passion and pressure were missing from last season’s defense, which led to the promotion of excitable assistant Steve Ellis to coordinator. Unfortunately, Ellis inherits only three returning starters and a load of question marks. Recruiting has stockpiled long, athletic linebackers and defensive ends, but they lack experience. Look for Omar McLendon and converted linebacker Gorby Loreus to play well at defensive end, and redshirt freshman Patrick McNeil must clog the middle for a defense gashed by the run a year ago. Senior linebacker Darin Davis is an all-conference-caliber player, but he will need the youngsters around him to step forward. A fall camp knee injury delayed Stephen Roberts’ debut last season, but he could be a difference-maker if he finally gets healthy. Safety Derrick Crumpton and cornerback Arness Ikner give some stability to the secondary. But steady play won’t be good enough. The defense must create turnovers, sacks and big plays to fulfill the longstanding purpose of the scheme.

2011 Middle Tennessee Special Teams:

The kicking game looks to be in good hands thanks to the feet of senior Alan Gendreau, a first-team All-Sun Belt selection, and punter Josh Davis, a second-team pick. Gendreau converted 10 of 12 field-goal attempts and is 38 of 52 in his career. Davis averaged 42.7 yards per boot as a freshman last year, second-best in school history. Senior punter Nathaniel Toulson also is in the picture. Senior Eric Russell averaged 6.8 yards running back punts and 26.3 returning kickoffs.

2011 Middle Tennessee Predictions:

Middle Tennessee has gone to bowls in back-to-back years, but last season was a disappointment because of costly turnovers and an NCAA suspension of Dasher. With tempered expectations and the Dasher drama in the past, don’t be surprised if the Blue Raiders again contend in the Sun Belt race. The Sun Belt slate should be manageable. Aside from an 0–5 mark vs. Troy, Stockstill’s teams have posted a 25–7 record against the rest of the league. Adding a non-conference win over Memphis or season-opening upset of Purdue could yield a third-straight bowl bid. A rare trip to Tennessee is also circled on every Blue Raider fan’s calendar.

2010 Record: 4-8 Sun Belt Record: 3-5 (T-6th) 2011 Returning Starters: 15; 7 offense, 7 defense, punter

2011 Florida Atlantic Players to Watch: RB Alfred Moms, WR DeAndre Richardson, LT Sam McRoy, DE Kevin Cyrille, LB Cory Henry, LB Yourhighness Morgan, FS Marcus Bartels, P Mickey Groody

2011 Florida Atlantic Strengths:
Morris is an all-conference candidate, and he will be running behind a veteran offensive line. The new 3-4 front seemed to liven up the defense in the spring, making the linebackers particularly happy.

2011 Florida Atlantic Weaknesses:
Quarterback remains an issue still to be settled going into the fall. The top pass catchers from last year (WR Lester Jean with 64 catches, TE Rob Housler with 39) also must be replaced. Cornerback is an area of concern.

2011 Florida Atlantic Offense:

In mid-October against Western Kentucky, the Owls are scheduled to play their first game in their new $70 million on-campus stadium with a tropical theme. The question is whether any quarterback can put points on its scoreboard. Last season, the Owls scored more than 17 points only twice after the opener and finished last in the Sun Belt Conference in yardage. Now Jeff Van Camp’s departure has opened the competition to a pair of tall juniors, Graham Wilbert and David Kooi, who have combined for 13 passes at the collegiate level. Wilbert had gained an advantage before injuring his throwing hand in the spring game. Neither quarterback will get the benefit of proven targets, now that receiver Lester Jean and Rob Housler are gone. DeAndre Richardson, who started three games as a redshirt freshman, is suddenly the dean of the group. That will put more of a burden on the offensive line, which returns the five starters who replaced the departed five last season. That front must create more holes for Alfred Morris, a physical back who had only three 100-yard games after hitting the century mark seven times in 2009.

2011 Florida Atlantic Defense:

In its first season under coordinator Kirk Van Valkenburgh, this unit improved from atrocious to merely mediocre, allowing 401.3 yards per game rather than 453.2. Now he’s installed a 3-4 defense to compete with all the spread offenses in the Sun Belt, while targeting the area’s abundant linebacker talent in recruiting. For this season, he’ll be heavily reliant upon the development of Yourhighness Morgan on the outside and the steadiness of David Hinds in the middle. There’s some experience in the secondary, with safety Marcus Bartels, the team’s leading returning tackler who had two interceptions in the upset of FIU, and cornerbacks Keith Reaser and Treon Howard, who received considerable playing time in 2010. One of the players responsible for the improved pass rush, Kevin Cyrille, returns on the defensive line, which should be a team strength. The issue is whether the Owls can stop the run, and much will depend on whether Jarvis Givens can hold up at nose tackle. FAU allowed 203.6 yards per game, on a 4.6 per-carry average.

2011 Florida Atlantic Special Teams:

Senior Mickey Groody is an all-conference punter who averaged an eye-popping 45.7 yards per attempt in 2010, fifth-best in the country. With the loss of Ross Gornall, the kicking job likely will go to junior Vinny Zaccario, who was 6 of 8 on field goal attempts for Memphis in 2008 before transferring. Sophomore Travis Jones (8.5-yards on punts) and senior Willie Floyd (21.7 on kickoffs) are the primary returners.

2011 Florida Atlantic Predictions:

After a recent decline, there is hope again for the FAU program, as Howard Schnellenberger’s dream of a stadium comes true in his 11th season. Eventually, some high-level recruits might come from a talent-rich region, as Schnellenberger expects, but the current team is too short on offensive talent to compete for a conference title. Nor is a winning record likely, with a five-game road slate to the start the season that includes trips to Gainesville, East Lansing and Auburn. Barring another surprise win against local rival FIU, or unexpected construction delays, the Oct. 15th stadium opening will likely serve as the season highlight.

2010 Record: 11-3 MAC Record: 8-1 (1st, West) 2011 Returning Starters: 14: 9 offense, 5 defense

Coach: Dave Doeren

Offensive Coordinators: Matt Canada Defensive Coordinators: Jay Niemann

2011 Northern Illinois Players to Watch: QB Chandler Hamish, WR Martel Moore, WR Nathan Palmer, OT Trevor Olson, DT Ron Newcomb, MLB Victor Jacques, CB Rashaan Melvin

2011 Northern Illinois Strengths:
Former coach Jerry Kill left the cupboard full, including veteran quarterback Hamish, who has size, astrong arm and is an accurate passer. Doeren and his no huddle scheme should be an instant hit as he builds on Northem Illinois’ high-powered passing game.

2011 Northern Illinois Weaknesses:
The pressure will be significant on Doeren, who has never been a head coach. Since the Huskies are coming off an 11-win season, the expectations will be fairly high. He must find Hamish a complementary running game; explosive Chad Spann has moved on and the Huskies don’t have an established back.

2011 Northern Illinois Offense:

Northern Illinois returns the majority of last year’s high-octane unit. In 2010, the Huskies averaged a MAC-best 38.0 points and 450.0 yards per game and punctuated the season with a 40–17 blowout win over Fresno State in the Humanitarian Bowl. Senior quarterback Chandler Harnish has a wealth of experience after starting 31 games in the previous three seasons. New coach Dave Doeren is relying on the versatility and experience of the dual-threat quarterback to run his no-huddle offense. The offense will feature a variety of different looks, including the shotgun, Pistol and snaps under center. Harnish, who finished second on the team in rushing last year with 836 yards, must carry a heavier burden until the offense finds a suitable replacement for two-time, 1,000-yard tailback Chad Spann. Newcomer Jamal Womble and senior Jasmin Hopkins get the first crack at filling Spann’s shoes. The good news is that the Huskies return all five starters on the offensive line, headlined by a pair of first-team All-MAC selections in left tackle Trevor Olson and center Scott Wedige. The Huskies have all the ingredients to equal last year’s offensive success if Harnish can stay healthy. There are plenty of experienced targets, with three wide receivers returning with at least 29 receptions and 525 yards receiving last year.

2011 Northern Illinois Defense:

Former NIU coach Jerry Kill built a solid, opportunistic defense during his three-year tenure. The Huskies ranked among the best units in the country last year, holding opponents to 18.9 points per game and recording 30 sacks while intercepting 16 passes. The defense in 2010, however, will look vastly different after losing numerous starters to graduation along the defensive line and in the secondary. In addition, NIU will be without linebackers Tyrone Clark (sitting out the season for personal reasons) and Devon Bulter (taking a redshirt after being involved in an off-campus shooting incident in early April), as well as strong safety Tracy Wilson (left school). There is some promise. The Huskies should be solid on the edges with ends Joe Windsor and Sean Progar, a first-team All-MAC pick in 2010. And two linebackers, Jordan Delegal and Pat Schiller, showed the ability to make plays last year. Safety Tommy Davis and cornerback Rashaan Melvin, both juniors, lead the secondary.

2011 Northern Illinois Special Teams:

The Huskies will have a new punter and a new kicker. Ryan Neir takes over at punter for Josh Wilber, who averaged 39.8 yards per attempt last year. The placekicking chores appear to be the domain of sophomore Mathews Sims, although Doeren can turn to junior Josh Gallington if there are struggles.

2011 Northern Illinois Predictions:

The season hinges on whether Harnish can stay healthy. He had trouble staying on the field in his first two years before playing in 13 of 14 games last year. The Huskies don’t have a backup with Harnish’s experience and ability to run and pass with equal efficiency. Northern Illinois navigated a tough schedule to win a school-record 11 games in 2010. This year, the Huskies have a more favorable schedule, with four of their first seven and final two games at home. The energy from a new coaching staff and desire for the senior class to play in a fourth straight bowl game should spur the Huskies to another strong season.

2010 Record: 8-4 MAC Record: 5-3 (3rd, East) 2011 Returning Starters: 15; 8 offense, 6 defense, kicker

Coach: Steve Addazio, First Season

Offensive Coordinators: Scot Loeffler Defensive Coordinators: Chuck Heater

2011 Temple Players to Watch: RB Bemard Pierce, RB Matt Brown, WR Rod Streater, DE Adrian Robinson, LB Quinten White Jr., CB Kee-ayre Griffin,

2011 Temple Strengths:
Pierce will be a big part of the offense, as he is the one who is able to establish Temple’s physical ground attack. He’s one of the best running backs in the MAC. Robinson is a versatile defensive end who should emerge as the team leader.

2011 Temple Weaknesses:
The Owls will have to find a way to compensate for the losses of defensive standouts Muhammad Wilkerson and Jalquawn Jarrett Wilkerson, a great run stopper and pass rusher, was a first-round pick of the New York Jets. Jarrett, a free safety, was a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles.

2011 Temple Offense:

In Temple’s eight losses over the last two seasons, Bernard Pierce has 38 rushing attempts for 169 yards with three scores. In the 17 wins, he’s gained 1,920 yards on 352 carries and had 23 touchdowns. Keeping him healthy is an obvious issue. The Owls, however, do have a very capable backup. Matt Brown rushed for 830 yards last season, filling in when Pierce was injured. Brown was suspended from the team in the spring but has been reinstated. Consistency at quarterback has been an issue at Temple in recent seasons. Chester Stewart started the first seven games last season before losing his job. He impressed the new coaching staff during the spring. Mike Gerardi, who took over for Taylor, had his moments both good and bad. Gerardi threw two interceptions in four of his six games. It won’t be a shock if junior college transfer Clinton “Juice” Granger makes a serious push for playing time. The Owls must get better at the wide receiver position. All-MAC Michael Campbell is gone, but Rod Streater (30 catches) was the team’s 2010 Newcomer of the Year as a junior college transfer. Former running back Joe Jones, who started in 2009 but was injured last season, also returns. Evan Rodriguez, a first-team All-MAC pick last season, heads a deep group of tight ends. The offensive line, with seven players returning who have started at least one game, should be solid.

2011 Temple Defense:

The Owls must replace two All-MAC defensive tackles, most notably Muhammad Wilkerson. Kamal Johnson, Levi Brown and Dante Weaver are the most qualified candidates. There’s better news at end, where Adrian Robinson, the 2009 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, is back for his third season as a starter. Despite the loss of four-year starter Amara Kamara, the Owls’ linebacking corps is loaded with talent and experience. Tahir Whitehead and Quinten White Jr. should hold down the two outside positions, while former walk-on Stephen Johnson looks to be the guy to beat out in the middle. The departure of free safety Jaiquawn Jarrett leaves a big void in the secondary, but there are two strong safeties with starter’s credentials Kevin Kroboth (a former walk-on) and Justin Gildea. Kee-ayre Griffin, who was recruited as a running back, is the Owls’ top cornerback.

2011 Temple Special Teams:

Placekicker Brandon McManus led the Owls in scoring the last two seasons, and he hit 13 of 20 field goal attempts last year. He was 5 of 9 from 40 yards and more. McManus also handles all the kickoffs. Temple will be looking for a new punter in the fall. Defensive back James Nixon likely will handle kickoff returns again.

2011 Temple Predictions:

Al Golden made Temple football relevant, winning a total of 22 games over the last three seasons the best three-year stretch at the school since the late 1970s. He took the Owls to their first bowl game since 1979 and guided the program to a 20–12 record in its first four seasons in the MAC. Golden is now the boss at Miami (Fla.), but don’t expect the Owls to disappear. New coach Steve Addazio, the former offensive coordinator at Florida, has everything in place a stout defense, All-America-caliber running back and solid offensive line to compete for a MAC championship.

2010 Record: 6-6 MAC Record: 5-3 (3rd, West) 2011 Returning Starters: 16; 6 offense, 8 defense, kicker, punter

Coach: Bill Cubit, 40-33 (6 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Bill Cubit Defensive Coordinators: Dave Cohen

2011 Western Michigan Players to Watch: QB Alex Carder, WR Jordan White, WR Robert Amheim, LG Anthony Parker, DE Freddie Bishop, DT Drew Nowak, MLB Mitch Zajac, SS Doug Wiggins

2011 Western Michigan Strengths:
Western Michigan wants to showcase Carder’s accurate passing. The Broncos exceeded the 40-point mark five times last year, and Carder recorded a 30-12 touchdown- interception ratio. White is his primary target and he has excellent run-after-the-catch ability.

2011 Western Michigan Weaknesses:
The Broncos have to pick up their defensive play, particularly when it comes to stopping the run. Western Michigan allowed 166.6 rushing yards per game and 4.3 yards per attempt. They need to get tougher play along the interior if they are going to Improve in that area.

2011 Western Michigan Offense:

Western Michigan’s attack begins with junior quarterback Alex Carder, who developed from gritty leader to dangerous passer as the 2010 season wore on. He passed for 3,334 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his first 12 games as a starter. But he can be reckless with his body, choosing to take on linebackers for the chance at an extra yard. What makes coach Bill Cubit nervous is a somewhat unproven offensive line in front of his franchise quarterback, including possibly a first-year starter at left tackle. Carder will have his top wideout back, with Jordan White granted a sixth year after catching 94 passes for 1,378 yards the most in school history and 10 touchdowns last season. White’s wing man, Juan Nunez (91 catches, 1,032 yards, 10 TDs), is gone, leaving questions about who will be WMU’s No. 2 wideout. At running back, Aaron Winchester is a returning starter, but Brian Fields and Tevin Drake are likely to see the bulk of the carries. Fields and Drake both showed they can be productive in limited opportunities as freshmen. Drake led WMU with 405 yards rushing at 10.1 yards per carry despite playing in just six games. At 5’11″, 212 pounds, he’s considered the Broncos’ most dynamic and promising runner of the Cubit era.

2011 Western Michigan Defense:

For the first time heading into a season in Cubit’s tenure, the Broncos look as if they have a pair of established difference-making tackles and a true edge-rusher. Senior Drew Nowak (6’4″, 292) and sophomore Travonte Boles (5’10″, 303) proved to be a productive defensive tackle tandem last season. Lanky 6’5″ junior Paul Hazel returns after an eight-sack season as a sophomore, though Hazel wore down late in the fall. Two players to keep an eye on are linebacker Desmond Bozeman and rover Johnnie Simon. The coaches consider Bozeman to be the most talented linebacker on the roster. Simon, a heralded recruit as a safety a year ago, will try to replace all-conference selection Jamail Berry at the Broncos’ hybrid linebacker-safety position in the second season of defensive coordinator Dave Cohen’s scheme. Sophomore Lewis Toler has become a weapon at cornerback. As a redshirt freshman, he led the MAC in passes defended with 14, including five INTs. Opposite Toler, however, there are questions at the other corner, where inconsistency plagued WMU in 2010.

2011 Western Michigan Special Teams:

Punter Ben Armer, a fifth-year senior, averaged 41.2 yards per attempt a year ago, dropping 17 inside the 20. He has a powerful leg and hit 14 punts of 50 yards or more. Kicker John Potter is coming off a solid season in which he made 10 of 12 field goal attempts, also successful on all 50 of his extra point attempts. He can handle pressure situations, making a game-winning field goal in overtime in 2009 against Buffalo.

2011 Western Michigan Predictions:

If it’s possible to reach a point where excitement and uneasiness collide, Western Michigan’s football program may be there. Two impressive performances to close the 2010 season, as well as the return of so many pivotal players, have undoubtedly created a buzz heading into 2011. However, a 6–6 record last fall and a fifth straight loss to rival Central Michigan have also placed serious pressure on Cubit entering his seventh year. Cubit, who’s 40–33 at WMU with trips to two bowl games, has a team he believes is capable of contending in the difficult MAC West. He’ll know soon enough. The Broncos’ MAC schedule begins with an anxiety-packed Sept. 17 home date against the Chippewas.
