MAC – 2009 Football Betting Preview

2009 Betting Preview for MAC Football

2009 Betting Preview for MAC Football

The Mid-American Conference is one of the more exciting conferences to watch throughout the season, mostly because of it’s high scoring offensive teams and unpredictability. The East division has had five different champions in the past five seasons. In ’08, Ball State went to the MAC Championship Game with a prefect 12-0 record and a top 10 ranking in both polls but was upset by Buffalo (7-5). This season, 4 of the conferences 13 programs will have new head coaches. Will the ’09 season have the same zaniness in Country’s most volatile conference?

In the East Division, defending champions Buffalo shocked fans during the winter by holding onto highly seeked out head coach Turner Gill, who was candidate at major conference schools like Auburn and Iowa State. Also, remember that the East has 7 schools so a few teams will play 6 divisional opponents and play only 2 Western divisional teams while others will skip a division foe and face 3 teams from the West, which seems to have led to a bit of a scheduling inequity this season. For example, what team would want to skip playing the worst team in the division to play Central Michigan? Without a heavy favorite, this veteran division that has 5 teams with 14 or more returning starters and 5 schools with returning seniors at QB. Meaning the MAC will be very interesting to watch this year.

There more clarity in the West Division. Central Michigan ended their run of consecutive conference titles at 2 last season as their D failed them in the final 2 contests of conference play. But, senior QB Dan LeFevour is back for his final year and the Chippewas have 16 returning starters a league-high , including 10 returning on the defensive side of the ball. Moreover, the other 5 teams have a new coach or limited returning starters. These factors combine to make the Chippewas the number one favorite to return to the MAC Title Game.

Chicago Bears 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

New Orleans Saints 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

The 2008 New Orleans Saints were a team stuck in mediocrity and inconsistency. They went the entire year basically trading a win for a loss every week, finishing with an 8-8 record. The club only had one two game losing streak, but only had one two game winning streak. The offense was sensational however, lighting up the league for 463 points to rank first in the NFL. Drew Brees passed for over 300 yards per game en route to a 5,000 yard season but the rushing attack, bogged down with injuries, only finished 28 th in the league in yardage. Reggie Bush had an up and down season, at times emerging as a more consistent and explosive threat but still only finishing with a 3.8 yards per carry average in only 10 games of action. Jeremy Shockey failed to make the impact the Saints had hoped for, and also missed a good chunk of action. Wide receiver Marques Colston also missed a handful of games. The defense was porous, surrendering 393 points to finish 26 th in the league. Linebacker Jonathan Vilma was a bright spot, producing over 130 tackles. [Read more...]

Jacksonville Jaguars 2008 NFL Record: 5-11 | Jacksonville Jaguars ATS (Against The Spread): 4-12

The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off of a very disappointing 2008 season, one in which they had been predicted to compete for the Super Bowl. Injuries slowed them down in a variety of positions, as did the underperformance of many players on the club. David Garrard lost his magic, throwing 13 interceptions with only 15 touchdowns. The offense finished the season ranked 24 th in the league in points, despite Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor being a dynamic 1-2 combination. The usually stout defense ranked 21 st in points allowed on the year. They were stronger as a unit against the run but didn’t generate consistent pressure on the quarterback to disrupt an opponent’s passing game.

Chicago Bears 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

Dallas Cowboys 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

Coming off of a disappointing end to the 2007 season, the Cowboys seemed ready to make a splash in 2008. However they failed to even make the postseason, and rumors swirled during the year about the relationship moody wide receiver Terrell Owens had with quarterback Tony Romo and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. A potentially dynamic backfield of Marion Barber and Felix Jones was undone by injury. Acquisition Roy Williams failed to make a difference in the offense. The defense failed to keep opponents off the board despite a particularly strong showing against the pass. This was in large part thanks to DeMarcus Ware, who made his presence felt as he emerged as one of the best pass rushers in the league, however many other defensive players showed their age. Chicago Bears 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

Chicago Bears 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

The Bears 2008 season was defined by mediocrity. The club finished with a 9-7 record and missed the playoffs. The much maligned offense finished 14 th in the league in points allowed, but the celebrated defense fell off from previous years to finish 16 th in points allowed. The defense ended up ranking 5 th in rush yards given up, while finishing 30 th in pass yards given up, a glaring disparity due in part to injuries to key players such as cornerback Nathan Vasher. Kyle Orton ended up starting most of the season for the Bears, and was decent at the helm, throwing 18 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions and completing 58.5% of his passes. Converted kick return specialist Devin Hester was also decent, but was not the explosive deep threat the Bears had hoped for Tight end Greg Olsen improved in his second season but the big revelation on offense was rookie running back Matt Forte, who piled up over 1,200 yards on the ground while facing the brunt of the defensive pressure. Arizona Cardinals 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

Atlanta Falcons 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

No one expected the Atlanta Falcons to make the playoffs in 2008. But the young team with the first year coach and the rookie quarterback surprised everyone. Matt Ryan had an excellent rookie season, completing over 61% of his passes and throwing for over 3,400 yards. Running back Michael Turner proved to be one of the best pickups for any team prior to the year. He produced 1,700 yards on the ground and scored 17 touchdowns. The offense finished 10 th in points scored. The Atlanta Falcons Defense matched the success of the offense, ranking 11 th in points allowed despite ranking 24 th in yards given up. The unit was led by the resurgent play of John Abraham, who managed to stay healthy for the entire year in part thanks to a reduced workload. He accounted for 16.5 sacks to anchor the defensive line.
