The 2008 season for the New York Jets could be called the Brett Favre rollercoaster. His strong start to the season propelled the Jets to an 8-3 start. His poor play in the final weeks of the season led to a 1-4 finish as the team missed the playoffs and finished 9-7 on the year. The acquisition of Brett Favre led the team to cut Chad Pennington, leaving the club without a quarterback of the future. That problem was solved with the drafting of Mark Sanchez out of USC, a move that Jets fans are of course comparing to the landing of one Joe Namath decades ago. The team was strong in the running game, led by Thomas Jones and strong in defending the run but was poor in defending the pass, ranking 29 th on the year. New England Patriots 2009 Preview, Picks, & Odds.

In many ways the 2008 NFL season for the New England Patriots can be summarized by watching only the first game of the season. Tom Brady went down with a knee injury and missed the rest of the year. Matt Cassel capably filled in and the team still managed to go 11-5, which would normally be good enough to make the playoffs although the team barely missed the cut. The Patriots finished with one of the best running attacks in the league, put together with a largely hodgepodge unit in which no one player dominated and 5 players had more than 70 carries. The defense showed some signs of aging and wasn’t dominant, although the team still finished 8 th in points allowed and 10 th in yardage allowed. [Read more...]

2008 was the year of Adrian Peterson, not just for the Minnesota Vikings but for in many ways the rest of the NFL. His dominance over the season, finishing with 1,760 rushing yards and a 4.8 YPC average, marked the transition into an age in which he could be the premier running back in the league, standing even above stars such as LaDainian Tomlinson. With Peterson, the club finished 5 th in rushing yards and 12 th in points scored. One has to wonder what Tarvaris Jackson did to put off the coaching staff, he performed far better than Gus Frerotte did, despite being replaced by him early in the season. Of course, looking towards the 2009 season it looks like Tarvaris Jackson will once again be denied an opportunity, as Brett Favre is seemingly coming to the team. The defense was even more impressive against the run, allowing only 77 yards per game en route to finishing 1 st in the NFL. They were 13 th in points allowed and were spearheaded by cornerback Antoine Winfield, defensive end Jared Allen and his 14.5 sacks and defensive tackle Kevin Williams, who added another 8.5 sacks. The Carolina Panthers looked primed to make a strong postseason run in 2008. They finished the regular season 12-4, in first place of their division and received a first round bye. However they ran into a hot Arizona Cardinals team that easily dismantled them. Despite their short playoff stint, the 2008 season was still a good one for the team. Quarterback Jake Delhomme stayed healthy for the entire year and the team finished 7 th in the league in scoring. The running tandem was devastating with DeAngelo Williams and rookie back Jonathan Stewart. The two combined for 28 touchdowns and over 2,300 yards on the ground. After missing the first two games of the season, Steve Smith still caught nearly 80 balls for over 1,400 yards.

With each searching for an NL-best 10th victory, Chad Billingsley and Jason Marquis will also try to bounce back from disappointing efforts as they square off tonight as the Colorado Rockies and L.A. Dodgers continue a three-game series.

Billingsley has failed in his previous two attempts to win his 10th despite being given at least a three-run lead in each outing.

Billingsley has won consecutive starts against the Rockies, including a 9-5 victory April 18 at home, after going 0-2 with a 5.76 ERA in his first seven appearances.
