Big 10 2010-2011 Basketball Preview

2010-2011 Big 10 Basketball Preview, Predictions Picks & Odds

Three teams finished tied for the best regular-season record in the Big Ten last year at 14-4: the Purdue Boilermakers, Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan State Spartans.

Purdue was considered one of the favorites to go all the way this season until Robbie Hummel tore his ACL. But with two of the Big Ten’s top ten scorers from last season returning (E’Twaun Moore, and JaJuan Johnson), this will be an difficult lineup to defend against. Ohio State won the Big Ten Conference Tournament last season. Coach Thad Matta adds a strong recruiting class to a good core for the Buckeyes, but they will miss the conference’s leading scorer last year, Evan Turner. Tom Izzo’s decision to stay at Michigan State instead of bolting for the NBA was huge for the Spartans; with Izzo at the helm, the Spartans are always dangerous.

Finishing in fourth were the Wisconsin Badgers, who had a conference record of 13-5 last season. Last year’s leading scorer on the team, senior forward Jon Leuer, returns to lead what should be a strong Wisconsin team in 200.

The Illinois Fighting Illini finished fifth in the Big Ten with a 10-7 conference record, while the Minnesota Gophers finished sixth at 9-9. Illinois keeps most of their team together, including their leading scorer last season (Demetri McCamey), and could take a step forward this season with more consistent play. Minnesota, on the other hand, will have holes to fill, with two of their three leading scorers from last season no longer on the team.

ACC 2010-2011 Basketball Preview

2010-2011 ACC Basketball Preview, Predictions Picks & Odds

All eyes will be on the Duke Blue Devils in 200 as they attempt to follow up last year’s dream season. After finishing the regular season 26-5 with a conference record of 13-3, Duke proceeded to win the ACC tournament and then the NCAA tournament as a one-seed. With forward Kyle Singler returning for his senior season, Duke will once again be a favorite to go all the way.

The Maryland Terrapins weren’t far off from Duke in the regular season, finishing 23-7 and sharing the regular-season conference title with a 13-3 record in the ACC. But an early exit in the second round of both the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament put a damper on the end of the season. With all three of the Terrapins’ leading scorers (Greivis Vasquez, Landon Milbourne, and Eric Hayes) having departed, the rest of the team will have to step up in 2010 to compete for the ACC title.

The Virginia Tech Hokies and the Florida State Seminoles finished tied for third in the conference last season with a 10-6 record in ACC play. With three of their top seniors returning, including their leading scorer last year in Malcolm Delaney, Virginia Tech figures to be in the thick of things. for the ACC title this season. Rorida State led the ACC in scoring defense last season, and will once again rely on their defense to try and fluster opposing teams.

Finishing tied for fifth in the conference with 9-7 records in the ACC were the Clemson Tigers and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Clemson will have to over~omethe departures of their coach [Oliver Purnell) and their leading scorer (Trevor Booker), but have brought in capable coach Brad Brownell to keep things running smoothly. Wake Forest also introduces a new coach in Jeff Bzdelik, who, like Brownell, will be without last year's leading scorer, Al-Farouq Aminu.

NBA Southwest Division 2010 Preview

2010-2011 NBA Southwest Division Preview, Predictions Picks & Odds

2010 NBA Southwest Division PreviewWelcome to the best and most complete 2010 NBA Southwest Division Season Preview available online. The teams that make up our 2010-2011 NBA Southwest Season Preview are the are the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Hornets and San Antonio Spurs.

Probably one of the toughest divisions in the league, the winner will likely need at least 55 wins. With that being said there are only two pragmatic teams that could win that many games this year and they are the same two that are always competitive in the Southwest every year—San Antonio and Dallas. Houston will return a healthy Yao Ming from a broken foot. The Rockets were a 53-win team with a fit Yao in 2008-09, and still managed an over-.500 season without him this past season. They could be the darkhorse of the division. Without any real solid defensive additions, I can’t see Memphis making a real threat, and New Orleans should be re-energized from the return of Chris Paul, but they’ll have a lot of work to do if they want improve from last season’s 37 wins. Dallas stood a good chance of beating an ageing San Antonio last year, and I look for them to win it this year.

2010 Dallas Mavericks Season Preview

Dallas Mavericks Season PreviewDallas won the Southwest Division last season and earned the second seed in the Western Conference playoffs, but the Mavericks couldn’t even get through the first round, losing in six games to the hated Spurs. So, while Dallas has won 50-plus games and gone to the playoffs 10 straight seasons, they’ve advanced to the NBA Finals just once. The Mavs ranked 12th in FG shooting at 46% and led the league from the line at almost 82%. They ranked a middling 15th in FG defense at 46% and 24th in rebounding at -1.2 per game, which might mean they won some games they shouldn’t have. Dallas also went Just 36-44 ATS and an amazing 10-29 ATS at home, although 26-15 ATS on the road. Odds are that those numbers will trend back toward normality this year. The Mavs are still formidable, with Fs Dirk Nowltzk, (25 ppg/8 rpg) and Shawn Marion, Gs Jason Kidd (42.5% from 3-point land) and Jason Terry, and F Caron Butler (for a full season). However, the mileage is adding up on some of their key people and that could keep Dallas from earning a top seed in the West.

NBA Southeast Division 2010 Preview

2010-2011 NBA Southeast Division Preview, Predictions Picks & Odds

2010 NBA Southeast Division PreviewWelcome to the best and most complete 2010 NBA Southeast Division Season Preview available online. The teams that make up our 2010-2011 NBA Southeast Season Preview are the are the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Bobcats, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards.

This will be a three-way battle between the Heat, Magic, and Atlanta Hawks. Larry Brown and the Charlotte Bobcats will be happy if they are somehow able to secure a playoff spot in this epic division battle. With arguably the best center in the league, Dwight Howard, the Magic has transformed itself from division creampuffs to juggernauts having won the division title the past two years. Besides Howard, they are loaded with talent and are headlined by Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis. But as incredible as that line up may be, it may not be enough to contend with the Heat who has gone into supersize mode with the addition of that LeBron and Bosh. As the battle of Florida rages, keep your eye on the Atlanta Hawks. With five double-digit scorers returning, along with the always-dependable Mike Bibby, it is hard to count then out of the running.

2010 Atlanta Hawks Season Preview

Atlanta Hawks Season PreviewThe Hawks won 53 games last season and entered the playoffs as the third seed in the East, but Atlanta struggled to beat a shorthanded Milwaukee team in the first round, then got swept in ignominious fashion by Orlando in the conference semis. So, a season full of promise ended with an ugly thud. The Hawks ranked 11th in shooting at 47%, 16th in FG defense at 46% and 16th in rebounding, and they went 48-34 ATS. Also, even though Atlanta games averaged the league median 199 points, they ended up 48-34 on the totals. Despite their relative success, the Hawks dumped Coach Woodson, replacing him with longtime pro assistant Larry Drew; and he inherits last year’s top six players. GJoe Johnson (21 ppg/5 apg) is an All-Star, G Jamal Crawford (18 ppg) provides pop off the bench, F Josh Smith (18 ppg/9 rpg) was an All-League defensive second-teamer and F Al Horford nearly averaged a double-double. Atlanta’s biggest concern, though, is the hole in the middle, which Magic C Dwight Howard took advantage of last May. So while the Hawks should again make the playoffs, they still need more to get by the big boys in the East.

NBA Pacific Division 2010 Preview

2010-2011 NBA Pacific Division Preview, Predictions Picks & Odds

2010 NBA Pacific Division PreviewWelcome to the best and most complete 2010 NBA Pacific Division Season Preview available online. The teams that make up our 2010-2011 NBA Pacific Season Preview are the are the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings.

Bryant is still the best player in the game and is the ultimate clutch player. If the Lakers’ Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom can stay healthy, adding to the likes of Pau Gasol, who has affirmed his status as an elite player, and Derek Fisher who is probably one of the league’s most unsung closers, this is still the Lake Show. There is no one in the division that should come close to the Lakers with the exception of the Phoenix Suns who have gained a year of experience but have lost the services of big man Amar’e Stoudemire. Sacramento and Golden State have exciting young players but they are fringe playoff contenders at best. With the addition of Blake Griffin the Clippers should improve, but will be a distant 30-win team.

2010 Golden State Warriors Season Preview

Golden State Warriors Season PreviewGolden State went 26-56 last season, as this franchise continues its decade-and-a-half-Iong hump through the doldrums. Putting the ball in the hole, of course, is not the Warriors’ problem, as they ranked eighth in shooting at 47% and averaged 109 ppg; but they also ranked 29th in FG defense at 48.5% and dead last in rebounding at a ridiculous -9.7 per game, as they allowed more points than any other team. Thanks in part to low expectations, though, the Warriors managed to go 47-34 ATS. While Golden State games averaged 221 points, most in the league, they only went 40-42 on the totals. Uncertainty hovers around this team going into the season. New ownership may want to make changes and who would blame them? The Warriors will be led by Gs Monta Ellis (25.5 ppg) and Stephen Curry (17.5 ppg) and, while they traded F Corey Maggette, they picked up F David Lee (20 ppg/12 rpg last year with New York). They also got 6-foot-10 F Ekpe Udoh with the sixth pick in the draft, but he had offseason wrist surgery and might not be available until January. Whatever the case, it’s hard to see Golden State competing for a playoff spot this season.

NBA Northwest Division 2010 Preview

2010-2011 NBA Northwest Division Preview, Predictions Picks & Odds

2010 NBA Northwest Division PreviewWelcome to the best and most complete 2010 NBA Northwest Division Season Preview available online. The teams that make up our 2010-2011 NBA Northwest Season Preview are the are the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz.

The Northwest division boasts what could arguably be two of the best shooting guards in the West, behind LA’s Kobe Bryant. The Blazers’ Brandon Roy and upstart Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant. Of course, there is still a sizable threat that will come from Denver Nuggets, but I am afraid the attention that surrounds whether or not Carmelo Anthony will remain in a Nugget uniform all year is still a major question, and leaves team with an uncertain future. However, the Blazers are older now and with Roy’s leadership should get even better this season. Finally, the Thunder with Scott Brooks as coach and Durant could still go further in the playoffs, as I don’t see any reason they can’t build on last year’s success. The Northwest will be a battle between two young up-and-coming teams, the Thunder and Blazers.

2010 Denver Nuggets Season Preview

Denver Nuggets Season PreviewFor most of last season, Denver looked like the team most likely to give the Lakers a run in the Western Conference playoffs, but things changed when Coach Karl left the bench to deal with a serious health issue and F Kenyon Martin hurt his knee. Eventually, the Nuggets lost in the first round of the playoffs to Utah. Denver ranked 10th in shooting at almost 47% and 14th in FG defense at just under 46%, but only 22nd in rebounding. The Nuggets also went just 34-42 ATS. Despite Denver games averaging 209 points, fourth-most in the league, they only went 38-44 on the totals. As of late August, F Carmelo Anthony (28 ppg) was still a Nugget, but it appeared that might change. If it does, who knows what might happen with this outfit. PG Chauncey Billups is coming off a fine season, but he’ll be 34. Martin, C Nene and F Chris Andersen are all coming off knee surgery. In remedy, Denver signed F Al Harrington. Coach Karl returns this fall and if all goes well, the Nuggets could again contend for a top-four seed in the West. There’s also a good chance this team will get blown up.
